They had a segment on The Hanger tonight dedicated to that game with Lloyd and Carey talking about their memories of that match. 1st Vs 2nd in front of nearly 70k on a saturday afternoon at the G, hard and fast from start to finish with final scores being ESS 24.14 158 defeated NORTH 20.12.132. I thought Carey was going to kill Barry Young that day. Football at it's finest.
Yeah we lost that game, but some of the greatest quality footy from both sides. Carey's left foot banana has already been mentioned, and I think Lloyd may have kicked a volley or half volley goal from around 50m. Supreme play from both teams.

As already mentioned, the North v Footscray R22 1998 1st v 2nd going for the minor premiership. Awesome from both sides, Carey v Grant. Maybe not as spectacular as the Ess v NM 1999 game, but one of the most intense and hard games played.

The Jason McCartney game is also very memorable - a tight game, hugely emotional and first class display from the Tiger's supporters in giving him a standing ovation and actually cheering for him during the game. AFL couldn't have scripted it better with McCartney setting up the winning goal. Not a dry eye in the stadium that night.

Read earlier - I forgot because I was o/s at the time and couldn't watch it live, hence I didn't get a sense of how good it was.
And you watched all the others live?
Either way surely as a cats fan you would know how highly regarded the game was and should have included it, or put it in after the first page of posts. It clearly wins. Great game - surely you've seen it since? If not, go watch it (just turn it off for the last minute :) )

Clearly wins? No, none of the nominated games 'clearly win'. It's probably the best home and away game of modern times (as in last ten years), but I'd wager that anyone who declares that it is clearly the best haven't seen enough of games from the 1980s or 1990s.

Except I didn't say it's 'clearly the best'. I said it clearly wins - as in this little poll - and it wasn't even given as an option.
As for the 80s - I'm a saints fan, I have erased that decade from memory. The 60s - now that was a decade of good footy!

No, I just forgot about this one, that's all. The others kindof stick in the memory because they all involve a 'most' - ie biggest comeback, highest scoring draw, highest losing score and what have you.

Was at the Hawks vs Cats game at Princess Park in 1989 when we won after being about 9 goals down early in the 3rd.

It had everything - Ablett and Dipper at it, Derm and Yeats as well, plenty of goals, beautful day with ice cold beer and plenty of wacky-tobaccy being smoked in the standing areas.

Did you get a shock when you read the paper the next day and found that it wasn't a hallucination? :)

I think a modern day football supporter would have a hard time rating a game played in the 80s or 90s at the same level as games played today. The game today is so much faster, more skilled and breathtaking.

The 2009 Round 14 game set a new level but I doubt very much that in 2025 people will answer the "Greatest H&A game" with the 2009 game because, like looking at the games of the 80s and 90s, footy is very likely to have evolved into something very different by then.

I think the 2009 game, like the Knights vs Van Der Har game in the 70s and the Hawks v Cats in 89, is a benchmark of its' time.

Saints Geelong 2009 imo.

Yep, definitely one of the best I've seen. It's about the only time I've ever seen/heard Docklands have any real atmosphere to it as well. The pressure and intensity by both teams was just ridiculous all throughout that game. Amazing stuff. And an amazing finish to top it off.

The Essendon Vs North Melbourne comeback game in 2001 was pretty ridiculous too. I was at that one. :)

I would say Round 1, 1990, Hawks vs Cats at Waverley.

Grand Final rematch, tough first half, Geelong hit the front early in the 3rd quarter, then Hawthorn unleash a 19 goal fury to win by 115 points.

I have this game in full with the half-time and post game footage. A classic game.

The Demo Derby in 2000 had everything. 1 point game, big come backs and the biggest blue in 10 years and probably still is. Dale Kickett went crazy. Of course I have a higher regard for the game because we won but I think that game put Derby's on the map.

Carlton v West Coast at Subiaco in late 1995 is one that sticks in my memory even though Carlton won by less than a goal
Gets my vote. We won by a point IIRC and it was a fierce contest. Think that might have been the game where Spalding took somone out. Did Mainwaring have a shot from a tight angle to win it but scored a behind instead? The skill level was immense that day.
