Either way I'd like to be in the position to find out. Amazed that some fans weren't that bothered by Varcoe missing. It only ended our season.
If we had been five points down, I would have been shattered. Being six down when he missed made it the difference between a faint pulse and cardiac arrest, rather than walking and breathing.

Is that the 91 prelim where had trevor poole taken two more steps on the run he would have kicked that goal and hawkers go down and no win that year? Thinking if this i'd love to see a thread about the lucky hawks. Here is a few games I can think of where they for some god unknown reason get the grace of god:
1.89 grand final. They were in front all day and deserved to win.
2.91 prelim(as above)
3.87 prelim against Melb at waverly
4.13 prelim against us. Varcoe kicks goal the're toast. Would have pushed the game into extra time, and we had kicked 1 goal to 4.8 in that quarter.
5.13 gf; freo forgot to catch the bus to the game Hawthorn were the best side all year.
6.14 gf; syd forget to catch bus to game Hawthorn play an incredible brand of clearance football
7. 15 gf; west coast forget to catch bus to gf Hawthorn were easily favourites to win that game
8. 91 gf; west coast worried about missing the bus in the last qtr so left early. Tuned into 3AW to hear that hawks kicked 8 or 9 after they left. Next year they dont make same mistake. Hawthorn were the fresher side after beating West Coast, in the West, three weeks ago and having a week off
9. 96. Should be the melb hawks, except Don thought otherwise.
10. 94 we forget to catch bus, following on from west coast mistake previous year against hawks. West Coast very much the favourites leading into both GFs we played against them
I dislike Hawthorn as much as many, but can't begrudge them most of this list.

I'm a chappy kinda guy. I can begrudge them every day; thats not to say I don't respect or even impressed by the Hawks, but grudge....ooh yeah!! Games against hawthorn are to me anyway like mini finals.

SJ's game against the Demons when we flogged them by 31 goals is the best individual effort I've seen by any player ever.
Pity you missed those GAS games.
He kicked 14 goals 3x, once from a wing v Richmond. Extraordinary.
The game v Bombers 93, 7.7 at half time, 14.7 full-time. And we lost.
There has been nothing like him, and I saw the SJ performance live

what did he do in that game?

it's hard to show on just stats, but he injured his arm a few weeks before.
That night he was fearless, untouchable and brilliant.

He had no right to dominate the way he did given his injury, but it didn't matter. He was our best player in the first half, before winning us the game in the second half.
Then Stevic took it away, but that should never detract from how good Jimmy was that night.

This prelim and his game the week after in the GF are the best individual performances I've seen. Actually, they are the best any footballer has played in vfl/afl history, period.

Best individual performance since Snr. I would probably give to SJ in the 2011 GF. Combination of playing through injury, the high stakes of the game, and his dominance on the day.

Agree with all of that Bruce/Ian.
SJ was totally in control of his game, and his display was near perfect and as you say full of merit given the injury and the day.
Those 2 Ablett games, in fact the week before against Melbourne, he was also stunning, but they would have to be close to the best games ever played.

I prefer his 150th game against West Coast in Perth in 1992 when he had 36 possessions and kicked 5 goals playing in the centre to cover for Buddha who had injured his ankle during that week playing kick to kick with kids while working on his garbo run.

Was a shame we didn't try that again in the finals that year. The GF might've been a whole different story otherwise.

No doubt, GAS has spoiled us with classic inimitable performances.

Cant remember any more detail other than this.
Max Rooke tagging Adam Goodes in his prime and giving him a towelling to get BOG. Anyone have the details of this game or knoe the one im talking about?

I think you're thinking of R20 2006 at KP - Rooke got 3 votes while Goodes received 1.

When we were preety shit I saw Scarlett put in some amazing performances. He really saved us from a few massive beltings during that time.
I think a lot of people forget how great he was before our "golden era".
Selwoods first half against Hawthorn in a final a couple of years ago was pretty awesome.

That's the one I was thinking. I think he was still Jarrod at that stage, though not an important issue.

I had to post something..

This recent onset of delusional remembrance .. this false comparative ..

Jessie Stringer has a way to go ...I mean a WAY to go.. and he is not even quite the same..as if there really ever is an exact player comparison anyway.
Screen Shot 2016-05-01 at 11.23.15 am.png

Stringer is taller and a bit lighter , a different era.

So far Stringer ..well he has kicked the odd good goal... I'll give him that, he hand passes more than Gary , but yeah lets just see you do something when its a final , when the pressure is on. Has he ever kicked 8 rep his state ( bit hard when no state games , but thats not the point) really... he is more Lindner than Ablett .... Package....Ill give you the package....

Inside out checksides , Torps from 80 out , goals on the run , crunching body clashes , Left foot , right foot , goals from the wing , goals from marks and those marks ... and as Sandy said in one of my favourite goals of his ..what more can I say

While we're going back...

36 touches, 5 goals. Away from home, interstate. Against probably the best line-up of the decade. I think this is the one where Blight later said, "It's almost unfair that you only get three votes for a game like that".

Id say this game more than most he played gives an insight into what he would be like in todays football. 5 goals from the centre , and a heap of handpasse's and that barrel near the end was nearly the icing on the cake.

What a shame that he was not fit enough to play the same role by the finals. Carried a hammy thru them from memory.

I saw all three 14 goal hauls live. Including the one in Sydney.

In 120 years of the VFL/AFL, only on 19 occasions has a player kicked 10+ goals in a losing side.

In 1993, Ablett did it three times.
