Best Individual season you've seen from a player

Ive always admired Brad Johnson’s 2006 season

Quite a few decent games 1977:

37 disp/5goals
38 disp/7goals
37 disp/7goals
33 disp/7goals
30 disp/5goals

30+/5+ is a once on a career game for most. Dangerfield has 1, Michael Walters as well. Not sure anybody else going around at the moment. Ablett Snr. did it 3 times over his career, Wayne Carey and Dane Swan once. Judd, Ablett jnr, Martin never, to add a few names.

Matthew went close nearly every week that year.
Aker also did it in that Geelong game with the two goals from the boundary in 2005.

As a 12 yr old tiger supporter in 1980 had to tag along with my mum, a dogs supporter, to around 12 Footscray games that season and got to witness
the brilliance and unstoppable force that was Kelvin Templeton. He beat everyone and anyone as he coasted to winning the Brownlow and booting
over 80 majors along the way,all from CHF.The coincedence being he was being coached at the time by THE greatest CHF of all time Royce Hart.

Tony Lockett's 1989 season or was it 1990 ? when he had 78 goals by round 12.
As a neutral i was looking fwd to seeing him break the 150 mark and that season he was on track,he had 2 yrs wrecked by an ankle injury
'89 & '90 in which hed have another 100 plus goals on his tally if not for that

Kouta played the game at a different level to anybody else in 2000.
Was virtually unstoppable when on.
Suffered a knee injury late in the season and another again a year later, was never the same player.
Shone as bright as any for a brief moment.
remember seeing this herculian wingman in'93 as a neutral at princess park one afternoon and turned around to a mate post match and said
that in a few years time nobody will able to stop that bloke, think it was carlton v fitzroy,Silvagni bagged about 8 iirc

From those I remember, surely GAJs period from 07-2010 would have a couple of nominations. Sublime in that period and clearly the best player in the game in that time.
For me the two great standout players post year 2000 are Gary Ablett jnr and Buddy Franklin. They were/are above a level from everyone else.

After that then it's perhaps Dusty, Judd and Fyfe. imo.

You just fed the Tiger Army... It's what every thread a Richmond supporter has started in the last 4 years is about, milking the recognition they feel starved of.

They don't care if it takes up space, if it grows into a 400 page behemoth they lose control of, so long as they can skim thru and cherry pick the salivating comments that praise their club or players.

You people are like bears to honey..
It ain't the honey matey, it's the salt...we can taste it in your blood lol

Yep, if you weren't roving in those days, you were resting in the forward pocket. You only came off the ground if you were injured or spudding it up terribly, think the sub era recently.

Me

Matthew Richardson 2008 was probably the most enjoyable

Others which I really enjoyed and rate as amazing seasons
Lance Franklin 2008
Brad Johnson 2006
Dustin Martin 2017
Nathan Fyfe 2014
Chris Judd 2006

Adam Cooney for about 15 games in 2008 as well was a machine

It happens. Plenty of players had great seasons before and after that for whatever reason get overlooked.

Gary Ablett managed to kick 10 goals against Adelaide (in a losing team no less) and not poll a single vote. There were games in 1989 he didn't get votes in either. Mindboggling in retrospect.

That said, sometimes great seasons do get recognised.

One that hasn't been mentioned yet - Kelvin Templeton in 1980.

75 goals from centre half forward in a team that finished last. In hindsight it's a miracle he won the Brownlow, no chance that could happen now.
Add Bernie Quinlan to that, 115 goals from CHF mainly. Ruck roved to boot.
Looks very Ablett senior like in some of these.

Greg Williams in only his 2nd season in 1985 and playing career games 13 to 34 amassed 675 touches at 30.68 per game, including 5 games of 40 plus (pretty much unheard of in those days) and won Geelong's b&f, was named the league MVP and was equal 4th in the Brownlow. In that 1985 season he had over 10% of all Geelong possessions that year on his own.

In a further 218 games over 12 seasons, he would only ever beat that season average once, in 1990 he averaged 31.73 per game from only 11 games.

Gary Ablett Jnr 2010

31.5 possessions per game and kick 44 goals

Not bad considering his coke head of a coach would lump him in a FP for long spells because of his refusal to sign a new contract

Sheedy would make Paul Salmon stand in the goal square and if he left for any reason, even if space to lead opened up he would be dragged.

1970 Alex Jesaulenko.
115 goals as a smaller type forward, through wizardy mainly.
Excellent finals series.
He (and Crosswell) turned the GF from 44 point HT defecit. Hopkins gets the credit though. Played up the ground often linking defence and attack.

Was involved in a classic FF shootout with McKenna in the 70 Semi, also a belter of a game which though Blues lost, helped them make GF plans.

Can't think of another consistently spectacular year as that.

Best half a season I've seen was Fyfe in 2015. Freo start 12-1 through R14 (bye in R12) and Fyfe amasses 29 Brownlow votes in the 13 games.

Then Sammy Mitchell takes him out off the ball, leaving him to miss five of the remaining nine games, limp through the other four, only pick up 2 more votes and then finish the Prelim with a broken leg (in the same place he'd been hit earlier in the year).

But for those 14 rounds he reached a level that Dusty and Danger could only dream of - and he has only reached that level sporadically since (maybe close in R6-11 in 2019).

For the record, Danger took 21 rounds to overtake the 29 votes Fyfe had after R14 and Dusty took 19 rounds to pass 29 votes. Or to put it another way, after 14 rounds Fyfe was on track to amass 45 votes before being sniped off the ball.

Yep fair call. It's great to look back at those highlights, to be reminded of how far some players could kick the ball then.

Running torpedo punts as well. Great player.
What amazes me these days is that the torp is rarely used. What players don't have time to practice?
Most could do it, and so many games goals were kicked using it. Not necessarily on the run like Quinlan could, but taking a shot when it is just outside your range, torp it.
My son could do it when he was 14, then they stop because they are not encouraged to do it any more.

Mitchell is a dog

Until he relented and gave him a run in the ruck only for Raines to run across his knee.
