Ablett Snr 93 was unbelievable. Simply unstoppable.

SOS stopped him. Held him to 6 disposals (averaged 14 for the season) and 3 goals (lowest for the season).
SOS for some reason had a good record against him, just liked the match up.

Well, yeah and it only got worse. At the end of 77 Lethal said he rated other awards more highly than the Brownlow. The umpires punished him in 1978 by giving him only 3 votes in what was another stellar year: 71 goals, 26 possessions and 6 marks per game. If ever you doubted whether umpires play favourites......

Only kicked 3 against Essendon too and 4 against WCE.
Buddy’s ‘08 is underrated considering how rarely anyone has come near 100 since. Was just kicking around 5 every week.
Ablett around ‘09 was just off the charts.
For the Dogs, Brad Johnson’s ‘06 was bonkers. 74 goals and averaged just under 20 possessions a game.

He had 8 shots on goal against West Coast and 6 against Essendon. Plus had twice as many disposals.
Best player I have seen and by some margin.

The one that springs to mind is Robert Harvey 2nd Brownlow year. Basically untouchable that year just bursting away from stoppages at will. I think a votes record that year too.

haha, I had to go back and check. I remember doing the numbers a little while ago for Ablett v Carlton (Silvagni). Ablett's record against Carlton is his poorest in terms of goals per game against all comers. I remember when I was doing them that there were quite a few when Silvagni didn't play on him, particularly early on when SOS was still playing forward a bit (there is a 5 or 6 year age difference.) In later games when SOS was a defender, he missed games against Geelong.
Just had a look again at when their respective careers overlapped. I reckon they would have only been matched up as direct opponents 6 times, all in Ablett's last 3 seasons. Prior to that SOS either didn't play, would have played forward or wouldn't have played on Ablett because Ablett was still largely playing further up the field.

Matthews 11 goals, 41 possessions, 9 marks.
Cant imagine too many 40 and 10'd.
In one year he got 30+ 9 times long before the days of cheap sideways kicks. Kicked 5+ goals 8 times too. 5 or 6 times both at the same time.
GAS is the 2nd best player Ive seen. But none come close to Matthews.
Oh the brownlow... what a s**t award.

Buddy 2008 is the first season that springs to mind. I'm actually quite surprised it hasn't been mentioned that often. It was unbelievable to witness him that season. As close to Michael Jordan in the AFL you could get.
Everyone likes to talk about the more sexy Lockett and Ablett but Dunstall used to just get it done like no other.
In 1992 Dunstall finished second in the Brownlow with 18 votes. Scott Wynd had 20 votes. Lockett finished with 10 votes and Ablett with 9 votes. Anyway Brownlow is a s**t award...
Dunstall that year played 23 games at average of 6.3 goals a game, and finished with 145 goals. His last game was in an EF at Subiaco where he kicked 6.0 (Sumich kicked 4.4) but Hawks lost by 13 after leading at 3QT. Fair to say if the Hawks had won that game he would've broken the goals record in a season of 150.
His goal tallies that year included:
- 7+ goals 11 times
- 9+ goals 6 times
- 12+ goals 4 times... including the 17.5 he kicked against Richmond in round 7.

Its never been a great award but it has become worse over time. The umpires literally only look at a couple of players each game. Why is why we see suchhigh winning scores.
Hudson was incredible but Ablett's 1993 and Lockett's 1991 were a whole different planet. Had both kept up their goal averages in the 5 games they did not play, Ablett would have finished with 160 and Lockett with 164 - without playing a final. In contrast, Hudson would have finished with 137 in a 22 game season.
Might have had a bit to do with the fairest bit of the Chas. Matthews was an incredible player but he was also a thug. A king hit ‘just because’ was never out of the question.
He never deserved to be called the fairest and best
By any measure he is in the best ten players in the history of the game, but he’d also make the top 50 list of the dirtiest.
