Okay, going with the criteria of things that came out in one way or another in 2024:

1. Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World - one of the funniest films I've ever seen, and one of the most genuinely brilliant insights into the current state of things. Just absolutely nails it.
2. The Zone of Interest - a masterpiece that almost a year since I saw it still haunts me. Again, a perfect encapsulation of the state of the globe in 2024.
3. Last Summer - prickly film that has stayed burrowed in my mind since seeing it.
4. Evil Does Not Exist - a beautiful film. Ryusuke Hamaguchi is one of my favourite film makers working today.
5. No Other Land - a stunning documentary that's sadly very underseen.
6. All of Us Strangers - I've never heard as much sobbing in a cinema as I did watching this. Incredibly moving, a beautiful little film.
7. Furiosa - covers some of Fury Road's familiar ground but, hey, I adored Fury Road. Such great action.
8. About Dry Grasses - similar to Last Summer, a very prickly film that challenges the audience and doesn't provide easy answers.
9. Trap - such a fun ride. Nobody does it like M Night! Astoundingly good Josh Hartnett performance.
10. La chimera - I've always liked Josh O'Connor and I'm glad he had such a breakout year.

Probably Romulus, Gladiator 2 & The substance, but only really like Romulus.

Poor year for movies imo.

Ok, largely caught up. Amazing year for me personally. Looking at my list it is clear that I like dark and f***ed up things.

As is spinynorman, sticking with Australian release dates. Otherwise Nosferatu would be up there.

I can't even think of 10, not a great year for movies.

This will be an unpopular choice, but Ricky Stanicky would be up there with the best I've seen this year, certainly the best comedy.
Deadpool / Wolverine was a let down for me.

I actually re-watched some TV series this year because the movie offerings weren't great.

For another unpopular opinion I liked Better Man with the monkey!

But Dune 2 and Romulus were my favourites from last year, I didn’t watch too many tho.

I didnt mind Trap, Carry On and The Fall Guy but i get why theyre there.

I think this is my top 15. It's so hard to pick a real list honestly there were so many good movies that I saw this year, 41 total '2024' movies. I go off the US release date for the most part hence something like Red Rooms or even A Complete Unknown being on this list.

Again, I find The Brutalist, The Substance and Nosferatu hard to split for example - loved them all, but find it hard to pick which I liked most. But you get the picture kinda from this list. Could talk about them all day.

The Substance is an entirely forgettable film that wont be rewatchable and IMO isnt worthy of oscar nomination. It's interesting and quirky, but nowhere near best picture level.

“Best picture level”… lol. Some of the previous winners have really made that a nothing statement.

There’s also now 10 nominees, it’s not even close to being the “worst” of those and I say that as someone who didn’t love the movie

People forget some of the stinkers that have won best picture over the decades. Crash is still top of my list of worst movies to win.
But biggest injustice for me is a tie between dances with wolves over goodfellas and forrest gump (which I do have a soft spot for) over pulp fiction.

I'd be ok with the actress from Anora winning but definitely barracking for demi
