Okay vinnie, that seems strange as every star midfielder has some sort of skill they can fall back on, for instance West - ball winning ability, Buckley - kicking, Hird - read of play, Judd - pace, Cousins - work-ethic, Black - ball-winning ability, Ricciuto - strength, Goodwin - endurance, ball-winning ability etc. Since Boak doesn't have an astounding ability a la these, what is Boak's best possible scenario, a very good but not quite star status?

1997.

I liked Boak pre-draft - Had him inside the Top 10.

His biggest problem is that theoretically, he could be a complete flop - And before I get crucified for this, let me explain:

When a player has a particular standout skill, you know that in the end, he will at least be able to fall back on that.

With Brendon Goddard and Luke Hodge, before they began to improve their ability to find the ball through the midfield, they were able to at least rely on their incredible kicking to be effective in the back half.

Likewise, with someone like Josh Fraser, although he hasn't turned out to be a fantastic tap-ruckman in terms of winning hit-outs, he has incredible mobility for a guy his size, which means that as a follower he is able to beat any ruckman in the league.

However, with Boak, he sort of needs it all to come together, because while he has decent pace, decent skills, reasonable attack at the ball and average height, but nothing eye-popping that would ensure that he'll find some niche to definitely stick around in the league.

That's not to say he won't put it together, as I think he's got a good chance to.

Do you know who he reminds me of?

I'll give you a hint.

Brock is head and shoulders above the rest.

Should have included Franklin rj. I find the Lance love-in highly amusing. He cant take a mark, is softer than butter, is terrible below the knees and looks plain awkward when chasing the ball. Hawk supporters should name him Bambi not Buddy.
Now pay attention you sour puss Richmond supporter; granted Buddy's marking does need improvement. At present this isn't a major worry because contested marks are histrical icons now. He's as quick as the wind, brillant below his knees for a 196cm player and kicks goals(done quite well against your donkeys). Just ask E- type cousins about his softness, after the bump he laid on him last year at the MCG. Hawk fans love him and secretly all Richmond people know, that not only did Wallace balls up taking Tambling before Buddy, but also Deleidio.

Boak's nothing like Fiora.

He's similar to a Luke Power kind of player, in that while not strictly an inside player, he isn't afraid to put his head over the ball, but I'd say his skills aren't as good.

If he can learn to make up for this with tough-nosed attack at the ball, then he'll make a good AFL player. Likewise if he can improve his skills to be worthy as an outside midfielder.

Agree. Terry's Tambling draft clanger will be a festering wound among the Tigers faithful for many many years, and will be known as Terry's legacy. It was a monumental gaff, and going by Terry's terrible list management record, the mistake was no accident. Terry's response to the Franklin oversight - recruit Kent Kingsley. It's called compounding a problem. :)

Franklin's more naturally talented, but I'd take McLean ahead of him, easily.
A team like sydney needs all the help it can get, only a matter of tim until your labour intensive, classless team runs out of gas.

Support the local butcher because i've seen meat axes with more class than sydney.

I'll assume that you are referring to L.Hodge you Richmond renegade. How can you compare those two draft selections. I will give you and all these other supporters(main. Eagles & Tigers) a heads up. Hawthorn supporters love Hodge. True Hawthorn people would not trade Hodgey for any player/s in the AFL. The fanfare that occured when Croad got traded to Freo would fade to comparision. Mark this down Hodge will go down as one the greatest players ever. Now get over it.

I was talking about Fiora.

Boak has the very same 'all or nothing' side to him going by the post I quoted. Fiora had the same potential, I never said anything about him failing like Fiora did.

That's a very good analogy - both blokes get the job done, but in different styles
Actually, Brock is like Sydney, and Franklin is like Eastern Ranges U 18's - he shows potential, but hasn't delivered consistently both week to week and during games.
