Best of 3 Grand Final Series

Essendon were the better side in 2001 (as you would remember from the qualifying final).

Port were in 2003. We just didn't know how to win AFL finals yet.

Brisbane were arguably the best side in 2002.

2003
1 Port Adelaide 18 4 127.23 72
2
Collingwood 15 7 121.58 60
3
Brisbane Lions 14 7 121.94 58
4
Sydney 14 8 115.04 56
The Brisbane sides of those years were clearly the best sides and merely waited to September to prove it.
Voss, Lappin, Black, Akermanis, Leppitch, Lynch, Johnson, Power, McRae, the Scotts, Bradshaw, Brown and best of all Clark Keating in September.

How can you claim to be the best side if you didn’t know how to win finals? So you were best by getting a few more wins during the home and away season where the stakes and pressure isn’t as high?

It seems as though this is finally getting the legs it deserves.

Now respected members of the media are even willing to admit Melbourne sides have a huge advantage on Grand Final day.
Some have even said the Grand Final should at least be shared around.

Surely supporters of Melbourne teams now can admit this must happen in the near future...

Enough is enough!

The best team will win anywhere. Ask these teams....

Adelaide 1997

Three game series is a load of bullsh%t.

I've tried really hard to remain sane with this "insane" idea. My conclusion is the AFL aren't in the business of bringing us joy, they're in the business of making money.
However, will three Grand Finals really make anymore money? The finals series has to be completely scrapped for a start.
No more final 8, just the top two sides after the H&A going at it in a best of three? So how would they do it? End of season "Bye" then two games in a row and if it's tied at 1-1 have another "Bye" and the decider?
Under the current system of a final 8 series the Grand Final decider could be played on Caulfield Cup Day? Are people that disconnected in sports administration that they have to continually come up with dumb, certifiably insane ideas just to annoy us all over the Summer break? We already have Cricket Australia doing a fine job of that without the help of Gill and his merry men!
English words are tricky, right? Gill is a master of the tricky language, the wonderful use of corporate jargon that nobody in the outer has a clue what he's actually on about. All he has to do here is come out and say "No, this is a dumb idea and we won't be entertaining that at all...ever"! Even Warwick Capper would get the gist.
That way we don't have to spend our entire summer learning the basics of our own vocabulary!

LOL at 3 games

As a supporter would you

A: spend $420 on game 1 and potentially price yourself out of games 2 and maybe 3
or
B: save your dollars and pay for GF tickets to the title deciding games 2 or 3

How would GF ticket guarantee's work, would you have to register for all games or could you pick and choose because not everyone could afford to attend all 3 games if it came to that or 2 for that matter with the prices the AFL charge for a Grand Final.

Many of those teams lost finals on the way to a flag. So the notion they will win anywhere is utterly false.

Many of those teams were also not the best team going around in the years that they won.

Grand final tickets will be cheaper for 3 compared to 1 as there is triple the supply. It will mean more fans and less corporates at games as corporates are likely to only go to one whereas fans will try to get to all. Three grand finals greatly benefits the supporters.

Whatever. Everyone can analyse this till the cows come home. The best team is the Premiership team. Home & Away means nothing, if you get the job done on the last day at the MCG, you are the best. Thats is the only thing anyone remembers, nothing else.

Which is why the system needs to change. Thanks for providing a reason why 3 grand finals are needed.

I have never seen so much sour grapes all because Richmond won the flag.

The Victorian media did not have one iota of a problem when Hawthorn won their three
peat against interstate sides, now only getting on their soapboxes because of their greatest fear,a Richmond dynasty.

Grand final day would be diluted, one of the worst ideas ever.[/QUOTE]

Gees mate you been living under a rock.

Media never stopped bleating about it! Saying how our 3 peat was slightly flawed because all against interstate sides.

If a sides good enough to win on the day regardless Vic side or Interstate they'll win!

Look at WCE this year.

oh BTW how's that dynasty going too your 1 in a row:D

With the MCG guaranteed the GF, i dont see any other option than to have a best of 3 grand final system in the interest of fairness.

AFL history of the last 5 years may look very different if the higher placed team had been able to host the GF

A best of 3 is ridiculous. I would have thought that by definition you can only have one grand final.

The problem is that the AFL is tied to the MCC because of the revenue it generates.

If the AFL put it's integrity before cash, this wouldn't be an issue.
