Best on ground

I actually must be one of the ew that like The Bounce.
It fills a void when the round is completed and there is nothing but reality shows on the free to air.
I don't like this Best On Ground rubbish however. Bucks is not the personality for this show, either is the drawling Browny.
Agree that the band is awful for tv viewing. Kath and Howie are personable and do a professional job but the three ex-footballers just look awkward and unnatural.
I can't see this show continuing into 2023.

which means fox will continue with it

I think the main issue with Bounce is that it's in the wrong spot. To me, there's no void there. The final match has just finished and there should be proper post-game coverage, especially on a dedicated football channel.

I think it would be a better fit on a Thursday evening to go through the teams or even on a Friday before the pre-game coverage.

Back in the day it used to be a pretty good show on a Friday night, when it had people on it like Mike Sheahan, Gerard Whately and Billy Brownless, alongside Dunstall. Obviously things have moved on a bit since then.....

Does anyone have any recordings of this version of Bounce? Can't find any on youtube, and hard to remember it, being so long ago.

Like all sports shows, both Radio and TV...it breaks the basic tenet - do not let footballers sing or play guitar.

Ive asked my Doctor for some Tamazapan....for the inevitible show where Bob Murphy comes on and drones a particularly lame version of some Oasis song.....

After seeing this thread go berko, thought I'd watch a bit of this show last night for the first time.

Watched the first 20-25 minutes - recap highlights of the day's games, discussion of Carlton's stumble, an interview with Chris Scott, NRoo with some pointed criticism of GWS, a quiz with Josh Daicos that wasn't too cringe, a Voss vs Hayes contest that didn't scale any great heights.

Thought it was better than The Bounce based on that small sample.

The extortion aspect is probably what gets me: if you want to see your team sing the song and a couple of locker room interviews after a big win you must watch the show.

But you're right, it could be worse. I mean I'll even go through the Big Footy match day threads for my team's games (especially when they've played well) in a desperate search for something insightful about the game and those things are like a dropped compost bag on the kitchen floor. Best on Ground is better than going through that.

'Best on grounddd...bbbeest on ground...Bessst on ground, bbb-best on ground...best on ground...yeah...' 🙄

Came to this thread expressly to say ‘this show could be better than Breaking Bad and it would still be awful by virtue of the song.’

The band itself isn’t THAT bad - they sound good enough to do local pub cover gigs. You need to be about 5 rungs higher on the ladder than that to be on live TV

Haven't watched this quality offering for quite a while now, but the promo for this week's show makes it look like a Wiggles concert.

is it trying to be like the matty johns post game show also on fox sports?

It’s a long way short of that.

One of the primary reasons for that is the fact that they’ve tried to shoehorn commentators who while easygoing enough, have forged their post football career as actual analysts and commentators. Light entertainment isn’t what they’ve built their second career on.

Matthew Johns was a Footy Show regular before he retired and was a cult figure because of Reg Reagan and Trent The Flight Steward which he then perfected as he became a full time Footy Show panelist when he retired. He had his own fairly ordinary FTA show but it set a bit of a template for what we have now.

Nathan Hindmarsh was always a jokey figure in rugby league, the ‘flop master’ who was jokingly criticised for building his tackle count by just flopping on players who were already tackled.

Bryan Fletcher was a known larrikin as a player and in retirement. They haven’t had to adapt anything to fit into a ‘gee these blokes are dickheads but it’s actually quite funny’ environment. Even two of the other regulars from most of the show’s history - Barney and The Professor - they specialised in pisstaking.

They have timing and nothing seems forced.

They generally get one current or ex player or in some cases Gordon Tallis to offer some sort of proper football content.

Best on Ground has its moments - I sort of force myself to watch it just as part of the generic Saturday football feast.

A smaller studio audience would help. Losing the band who sound like a decent but not quite good enough to play anything but small pub gigs garage cover band.

Losing Mark Howard who, try as he might just isn’t that funny, would help. Kath Loughnan I think is actually a very astute presenter but she’s not cut out for this.

The one who actually offers the most deadpan and intelligent humour? Nathan Buckley. That’s probably a worry.

The other thing it lacks? Self deprecation. Both shows enjoy the panellists taking the piss out of their co hosts. On the MJS they actually revel in talking about their own stupidity and poor football moments and so forth

I would definitely recommend you as a producer on foxfooty
