Hard to go past Ledger in The Dark Knight.
Was totally bemused when I heard that they had cast him, however, I am yet to see a performance that has equaled his.

A couple of other really impressive performances:

Tom Hardy - Locke
The single most disappointing thing about The Dark Knight Rises was the under utilization of Hardy's Bane in the second half of the movie. Hardy has a few average movies in his resume but he keeps building and building. His performance in Locke is probably the most impressive execution of a single-actor movie that I've seen.

Sam Rockwell - Seven Psychopaths
In this rollicking black comedy Rockwell completely upstages and steals the limelight from Farrell, Harrelson and Walken.
This and his role in The Way Way Back are what sent him IMO to the top echelon of actors.
Can't believe that he's 50 already.

One strong acting performance that I remember came from an actor often maligned in Adam Sandler.

The film was Click, and in the second half of the movie Sandler's character observes from afar the mess he has made of his life. His self-loathing at the way he has treated his family especially his son and elderly father was extremely powerful, and one of the most moving and convincing portrayals of a man who hates himself and is torn apart by regret I have seen.

People criticize much of Adam Sandler's work - sometimes justifiably (Jack and Jill anyone?) - but to have written and acted these scenes so well shows that he does have talent.

For a 1992 movie in our own backyard, again, our home grown talent is exceptional. Did well in Gladiator too obviously. ******* stirring stuff.


As mentioned by legendary Media poster Chefmeister, Hardy was top class in Legend, amongst others.

Also Michael Douglas in Falling Down is a 5 star act.

As for the best I couldn't say. Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs is up there. Hanks in Forrest Gump supreme. Bana in Chopper couldn't portray Reid anymore and any better. Dynamic role.

Williams and Damon's partnership is as good a one-two punch as Shaq and Kobe. ******* dynamic. Aflleck was also great in this flick and in one of the scene's here.

One of the best movies ever.
