Surely Lockett deserves at least a mention. In the BEST competition, he kicked more goals than any other.
It's really tough to do Bloods. For example my Pop used to tell me that Southby was the best player he ever saw. Southby doesn't get much kudos but my Pop was very astute and I trusted his judgment.

I remember one day he gave a speech at half time to our team in the Grand Final and we ended up thrashing our opposition.

He was a great man.:)

Love you Pop, hope your causing trouble up there.:thumbsu:

It's incredibly hard to do. My dad saw Coleman and swears he was the best player he ever saw until Ablett. Although he's Geelong like me it wasn't an easy choice. He also says Skilton was unbelievable.

Ultimately it comes down to our own preferences and choices.

My Dad (born in 1919) also said Coleman was the best he ever saw. He also put Laurie Nash & Les Foote right up there with the greats of the modern era.

Surprised to see Judd and Ablett on that list.

Judd may be, but not yet.

Ablett was mercurial but for mine, irrespective of how well he played, he was unable to inspire his own team, the way guys like Carey and Matthews did - see four losing grand finals.

1. Lethal
2. Carey
3. Plugger

for the blokes I have seen play.

going by what I have heard Bob Skilton:thumbsu: was by far one of the greats of the game. similar to Brenden Fevola. Kept scoring goals no matter what position on the ladder his team was on

It Dosen't matter how many times this poll gets done on this forum or any other, Ablett always takes the votes.
The bottem line is Ablett will be appreciated more so ten years down the line than Matthews or Carey...

Yeah, but at the same time it's hardly his fault. I think anyone would agree that from 89-94 he did his job on the field. It's the other players - Brownless, Garry Hocking, Bairstow, who would go missing in big games. Same with Bob Skilton, you can't infer he wasn't top bracket because he played in an average team.

Impossible question but Laurie Nash (Test cricketer also) once kicked 18 goals in a state match after being moved from the centre to full forward in the 2nd quarter. If you read Jack Dyer's books he raves about him. Apparently Laurie would have voted for himself in this poll if he ever got the chance!!

Like Ablett's memorable performances in 92, 94 & 95. Please. The guy is the most selfish footballer of all time and people continue to revere him for his ability to be individually brilliant.

I get so sick of this, Matthews and Carey lead their sides to flags, were team oriented, made sacrifices of their own personal ability at times to bring others into the game, to make them greater players.

Our game is about team, about winning together, about working for one another, not individualism. Ablett was an out and out dud in this area.

How can one player kick 127.100 or whatever it was unless he is a selfish, tunnel visioned player - the things most of us dislike the most in football.

Anyway, will never rate Ablett that highly because the facets I love about Aussie Rules footy ie sharing the podium and the grand stage with your mates were never part of is repertoire. Not even in the top 10 IMHO.

I just find it odd, if most of us dislike these things in football, why was Gary Ablett the most entertaining player of all time?

From the viewpoint of those that don't understand the game I guess.

There was a quote by Woody Harrelson in White Men Can't Jump along the lines of:

"A black guy would rather look good and lose while a white man would rather look bad and win"

For the black guy read Ablett, for the White Guy read Matthews, Carey, Voss, Hird.

All far superior players of the modern era, and all have premiership medallions at which they were at the forefront to prove it. Was Ablett ever a captain.

Those that don't appreciate the nuances of football, of the thrill of winning, of sharing, of competing and winning premierships would probably agree that Ablett was the best.

But the best to me is the one that makes others better to achieve a greater goal, and Ablett was useless at that. That makes him a long way from the greatest player ever.

It's a non argument, but tragics that don't understand success (ie GFC supporters, how long has it been), have come to appreciate individual brilliance over teamwork, therefore hold it closer to the heart than helping your teammates to win.

Part of the issue with the losing culture you've been fighting for over 40 years.

Perhaps you'd prefer to lose the flag if it means watching Gary kick 9.8, two out on the full and laying no tackles.

Fair enough

Too hard to pick one player.....

So the best players I've seen are;

Tony Lockett, Robert Harvey, Michael Voss, James Hird, Nathan Buckley, Wayne Carey, and Gary Ablett.
