I'm working on my project again to rank the best players for the season and compare and contrast to the Coaches votes and Brownlow. Also going to again use this for All Australian purposes.

I'm interested to see which players breakout and and rank the best 50 players by season end.

The Brownlow is flawed but it will be interesting to see how it plays out with the changes this year. The coaches award is a reasonably good measure but it's still midfield biased.

I created a system last year and have modified it throughout finals, and more again this season. It's a measure of overall impact in games. I have adjusted the stats for forwards slightly, less for rucks and much more for defenders who now have a better chance of scores that match midfielders. I've adjusted the scores to better match the benchmarks for some of the elite games over the years and it's more robust than last season.

I've included more defensive stats to finely tune the quality of defensive games, midfielders are punished for turnovers and clangers promoting quality of disposal. Hitouts to advantage slightly reduced as scores were uneven. I've also added a small capped negative score for each point a team loses by to ensure that players in losing teams need incrementally bigger games.

I copped a fair bit of negativity last season for floating this but I put a lot of time into this so I'm happy to put people on ignore if they're going to be overly argumentative or trash talk my project.

Assuming uninterrupted seasons I'm going to predict Nick Daicos, Errol Gulden, Christian Petracca, Bontempelli, Butters, Ed Richards, Jordan Dawson, James Sicily, Noah Anderson, Clayton Oliver to potentially be top 10.

By all means feel free to discuss your best players for the season round by round.

Harris and Charlie were poor
Both players impacted better with less disposal. Charlie got 4 goals, 5 tackles inside 50 and made the most of the opportunities he got. Could have got a bigger score without the clangers. The system is about efficiency. Lachie Whitfield for example did poorly with high disposal count.

Harris Andrews also impacted with less disposal. 3/3 one on one contests. He hit the defensive efforts across the board. And fwiw I'm glad defenders are scoring better.

Dambrosio wtf? Callaghan with 27 touches, 7 clearances and 800 meters gained can’t get a point?

You don't have N Daicos in the top 5. Did you watch the game? Either way your system is flawed if this is the result as all experts that have knowledge of the game would have him in at least the top 3.

Yes there were some turnovers, but do you rate the amazing stuff that only he and a handful of others could do. In the second quarter he managed to get out of a tight space and kick a beautiful kick to someone in the clear. Brilliant piece of play. Does your system reward that, or just a stat for a kick?

Neither did AFL ratings. He had 6 clangers which hurt him. Without them he probably scores the most.

By all means look at the good stuff but ypu cant ignore the turnovers and clangers.

Its a system and none are the same just as much as an opinion. I had an argument about a 27 disposal game ftom Finn. Its about what you do with the ball.

For reference there wasnt a lot in that game which I mentioned unlike the other games where Petracca was 20 points over tge next best

Also good thing Im ignoring trolls ;) (not you)

Yep.

Goes to show how rubbish both systems are.

Players who were better than Daicos, according to PLaYeR RaTiNGZ:
Kieran Briggs
Dane Rampe
TDK
Blake Hardwick
Adam Saad

I won't go on, but all these players were in the top 60 players for the weekend, with Daicos outside the top 100.

It must be embarrassing continually trying to justify broken formulae.

LOLOL - Gulden would be over the moon that he was able to sneak into the top 100.

Gulden rated 89th, Daicos 106th for the weekend.

Nick Daicos voted Best on Ground by both coaches yet can’t make your top 5. Last team I read this thread.

Nice work.

One comment: INCOMING re: Nick Daicos. Taaake cooover!

I had to reconfigure the after the first round because I had a couple of erroneous value references which overinflated D'Ambrosio.

To reiterate this is not a typical midfielder focused system. I've clearly buffed forwards and defenders from last year. There may be some players from time to time that farm the system as with every other system out there. The system is still heavily rewarding centre clearances and inside 50s, Goal assists and Goals which are the most fundamental to the game.

Here's your best contested one one one defenders. I think Georgiades is going to be up for a tough game this week.

Adelaide Vs Carlton

This one was a super scrappy game so it yielded some low scores. I expected LJ to top the list but I'm not disappointed to see Luke Ryan on top as he was the standout defender.

Collingwood vs Fremantle

1775894509002.webp

Brisbane vs North Melbourne. Trembath 3rd on raw scores not including loss factor

Max Gawn 2nd on raw scores but given the heavy loss he's lost a fair few points

Will be interested to see how this equates to the Real MVP - The Fadgelow - the award every AFL player strives for...

I'll give you a heads up - Oliver and Xerri not in the mix; Petracca wouldn't want to miss too many more games with injury, and Cripps not in my top 100.

Well at least you're doing something constructive building your own system rather than just laughing at everyone elses.

You are aware that no two systems are going to be the same right?

Not sure if he is the best player in the competition right now (I personally think he is but I am biased) but Heeney is very lucky that Gulden is out for most of the season. With Gulden out Heeney has a genuine chance of winning the Brownlow. If Gulden was there he would take too many votes from Heeney for him to be in contention.
