We have had a number of post season surveys on these boards, here is another...

The supplementary and rookie lists are for players that are young and were missed in both the national and pre-season drafts. If you take that 80 players are taken in the national and 30 in the pre-season this would make a rookie player effectively pick 110 - 160 and a supplementary player pick 160+

When the national draft is on, there are always stories trotted out about how superstars were left until really late (eg. Hird (79), Grant (105)) and how that would never happen these days.

Occasionaly some of the players do graduate onto the senior list which kind of proves that there is value to be found in the lower picks (effective 110+)

Question: Who is the best player that has come from a Rookie or Supplementary list?

My best is Andrew Kellaway - From supplementary player to All-Australian.

Honourable mentions to Dean Rioli, Greg Tivendale and Royce Vardy.

That's tough.

Mark Porter has a sensational debut when called up from the rookie list to replace Harry Madden. Injuries have cost him the last couple of years but he gave a glimpse of his capabilities towards the end of 2000.

I believe he could become a great player very soon and I am rubbing my hands together thinking of the Porter/Allan combo next season.

For the saints, I would have to say Andrew Thompson.

His route to AFL football was rather complicated but I think it went something like Melbourne Grammar, then overseas, then St Kilda supplementary list, then Old Melbournians, then Western Bulldogs supp list (runner up in reserves B&F), then back to Old Melbournians and finally drafted by the saints with a very late draft pick in the 1996 draft (around the 60s - 70s).

That would correlate to over 500 or so I think.

Daniel Wulf was overlooked in the 1998 national draft, then was picked up by the bulldogs in the pre-season draft, delisted at the end of 1999, spent 2000 on the saints supp list and was the very last player selected in the national draft in 2000.

I bet you wish I left this post alone now CJH!

In all seriousness, I think Woewodin has to be the best success story. Both the Johnson's at Essendons had a similar path I think, missing out in the national draft once or twice.

both the johnsons came through the rookie system
mark was redrafted onto the rookie list a second time before he got onto the senior list
garry moorcroft was also a rookie list player after his first stint on the senior list, he then came back on to replace david grenvold
and of course dean rioli

Scott Freeborn was upgraded to the senior list at Carlton when Sean Charles went walkabout...I like the way he plays his footy, good in close and great disposal under pressure.Another player who has sneaked a place on the Blues list is Jordan Doering, a left footed utility type player..played as a top up player at carlton in the two's and then was picked up by Essendon where he came second in the best and fairest for the ressies, was delisted and picked up by the blues and easily won the B&F in the Carlton two's..he knows how to get a kick this guy and will play senior footy this season.
I was surprised the bombers gave him the flick..maybe some of the their fans might like to comment on Doering.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't Woewodin taken as Melbourne last player in the pre-season draft?

Technically he was not a rookie/supp player, although his is one of the more remarkable stories in AFL.

I will however pay Thompson! Did he make All-Australian at any stage?

I was under the impression that after Wo woedien was over looked in the draft. He did pre season training with the Dees and was put on the rookie list.

Ben Marsh came off the rookie list for the Crows. He had a great first year, then did his knee. Coming back last year he struggled and for some reason didn't play with the Crows much. Let's hope he comes up in Season 2001.

this is probably a bit prremature but i would like to say Tom Tarrant & Clint Alleway.
they are both Champs
if we dont get those 2 guys & Andrew Jockey Jackson I will have to cry
I think we will have Clint Alleway first. The bombers were looking at him all season. we like so thought that they would take him that'sa wghy it was such a surprise when, noit only did they not take him but they took Michael Davis. He is a Champ also. My Friend is involved with the South East Bushrangers(U18's) & he was their Captain last year. It is a good club. Ben Doherty came from there last year.
I would just also like to wish Ben all the luck i could possibly wish to him for Tuesday. He hads been training very well from my reports. U Go son!

I believe Mal Michael qualifies to be included in this thread, he has proven himself to be a good player
