Did i miss something or did The Age not cover this game? Nothing in the paper yesterday or today (except more Tania). It seems my last reason for actually buying the paper might have vanished.

Watching the replay (again:oops::D) & just noticed that after Joe's first flying back into the pack mark, the camera is on Bomber & it looks like he says to others in the box - 'He's got it, yeah'.

High praise:thumbsu:

Genuinely wouldn't surprise me, but considering I haven't even looked at a copy of The Age in months, I wouldn't have a clue.

Wouldn't of missed much would of talked about how crap North were and give heck all credit to Essendon.

Hey Lance Uppercut

Can we not lose sight of the fact that either Richmond or Carlton will go 0 - 2 next weekend?

kthanks

Go blues.. *washes mouth out with soapy water*
If Tigers win they have a chance of bing 9th in round 2 ;)

They did, I think John Pierik covered it

Hello all, been away most of the weekend, so now, in a time where we celebrate our grand first up win, I have to say...

Poetic hilarity has been served.

Hey. Have not really had time to sit down and reflect on the game. Busy weekend. I did this in most review threads last year. I guess it's my own way to reflect on the game, so hope you all don't mind! My thoughts from seeing the game live. Yet to watch a reply.

Patrick Ambrose - I didn't follow him to closely in the pre-season games, so I went with no real expectations. Was really impressed by Ambrose. Competed all night, got on his bike, harassed, and showed real courage. I'm yet to watch the reply, but the way he backed into the pack like that was incredible. I feel as though over the years we have not seen many moments like that. Really happy to keep him in the side. I feel though his confidence will sky rocket when he gets a bit more of it. 6 tackles :thumbsu:

Mark Baguley - A no fuss player. Does what is asked of him. Gets the job done. His disposal was a real knock on him at times last year. Went at 94% :thumbsu:

Jake Carlise - Competed well. Will take him a couple of games to get into the flow of playing up forward. Had two important goal assists :thumbsu:

Paul Chapman - Haha. What else can I say? What a perfect debut. I honestly still can't believe he is now an Essendon player. 22 disposals, 4 goals & 2 goal assists. Just a real polished performance, his on field leadership is invaluable. Ambrose will learn a lot off him. Let's hope he continues his run of beating Hawthorn. :thumbsu:

Joe Daniher - Both those marks going back with the flight assisted to pitch a tent in my pants. His kicking is still a issue, but if he can average 2 goals a game for the season as a 2nd year KPF, I'd more then happy with that. :thumbsu:

Dustin Fletcher - Nah, I don't really need to say anything about Dustin. Living legend. :thumbsu:

Martin Gleeson - Not phased by the big time. Was very calm and poised while under pressure. Disposal was very good. Very excited to see how he develops over a year. :thumbsu:

Brendon Goddard - I said this a lot last year, but he is honestly worth every single cent we are paying him. 26 disposals and 3 goals. His delivery inside 50 was sublime. Love the passion he displayed when he kicked his 3rd goal. :thumbsu:

Kyle Hardingham - Was the same old Kyle for about 75% of the game. His disposal was awful (58%) but what I loved was his endeavour to contest. Was fantastic when he went back onto Thomas. A very handy 2 goals. :thumbsu:

Dyson Heppell - Immense. Popped up everywhere. Think this will be his best season to date. :thumbsu:

Michael Hibberd - Despite how well he played, I still thought we rushed him in just a game early. His disposal once again was fantastic. :thumbsu:

Heath Hocking - Made Daniel Wells non existent. :thumbsu:

Cale Hooker - What a f**king star. The ability to zone off and take intercept mark after intercept mark was just incredible. Not only that, he went at 92% for disposal efficiency. :thumbsu:

Ben Howlett - Started off slowly, but picked it up nicely. Really like the look of him lining up on the half forward flank. If he can continue to lay 8+ tackles a game and average 20 disposals/1 goal a game, we'll be a much better side for it. :thumbsu:

Michael Hurley - Great performance in defence by Hurley. Looked very settled down there. Great use of the ball by foot when coming out of the D50. :thumbsu:

Jackson Merrett - So pleasing to see him get quite a bit of the ball and make good decisions with it. :thumbsu:

Zac Merrett - That's exactly the kind of impact you want a sub to have. Can't wait to see him play a full game. :thumbsu:

David Myers - I f**king love seeing his big body at the stoppages. 7 clearances. :thumbsu:

Patrick Ryder - Great in the ruck and around the ground. Solid performance by Patrick. :thumbsu:

Brent Stanton - Probably one of the more quieter players on the night. Not a knock on him by any means. Still thought he was very good. Some real important clearances:thumbsu:

Jobe Watson - That first half was just incredible. Real boys amongst men stuff. :thumbsu:

David Zaharakis - A real polished performance by Zaka. Showed some really great endurance and ran both ways :thumbsu:

All in all, what a great game to be at. I can't say there is to many better feelings then seeing your team win a game of football. Even better that North were so bad. Literally no on field leadership, a coach who has no idea (I still can't believe he didn't send a man to Trent Mckenzie in the GCS game), senior players who are just happy to go through the motions. Was Shaun Atley the player we were meant to regret for not taking? Anyways, perfect start to the season. Long way to go, but some very good signs :thumbsu:

Why is anyone surprised by any bias in the AGE? They are a pathetic paper (well AFL anyway) who have shown their agenda driven impartiality. Won't read them. The can **** right off.

First Post this year,
I must say that the smartest comments the commentators made Friday night was how skinny Gleeson's legs are... Really?
Just wait until we have to listen to BT & Darce commentate on a Bombers game.....
BT: "Wowee Darce, look at them pins!"
Darce: "Yeaah, I really like the way he goes about it"

Was a repeat of the Dreamtime game last year starved Richmond of the ball and did the same to North both clubs play a similar style.

Agreed. It was a total belting everywhere but the scoreboard. It's easy for North to look flat when they are chasing tail all night and unable to possess the footy to control the tempo of the game for more than one 15 minute period.

Would go as far as saying that it was in our top few games played in the last 10 years (not that there has been that much great footy).

We don't see this defensive gear often enough. With the forward line still a work in progress I have absolutely no problem grinding out these sorts of lowish scoring results because it rounds out the defensive side of our game plan. The point at which Daniher, Carlisle, or whoever else ends up in the second key forwards spot long term, and the forward line more generally develops a chemistry of players with the physical maturity required to be consistent forces in AFL games is when a game like Friday night's becomes a 100+ point win.

The starring performances on the night aside, including Hooker's, the game was all about the increase in midfield depth and the debuts of young guys who'll contribute a lot of significant footy this year. Really liked Howlett's game as a forward come midfielder too.

Myers and Merrett getting mid 20s on the stat sheet, to go with Myers throwing his weight around, is great especially when we take advantage of their skill to deliver the ball forward. Teams probably need 10 to 12 midfielders capable of working hard enough to accumulate those sorts of numbers so we're getting close to the require number if we aren't already there.

Enough seems to have been said about the debuts of Ambrose and Gleeson but both are clearly making claims to spots in the best side (the structural significance of Ambrose and his work ethic being a key factor in the improved functioning of the forward line). Selection is going to be a nightmare if we get the expected players back in the next 3 or 4 weeks.

Have no idea where it came from but god it was good to watch.

Guys, seriously, he made a mistake. No need for the overreaction
Who did he mean instead of Cunnington?

I'm a fan of Cunners but he sure as hell wasn't in the top five players on the ground. Watson only scoring a 7 was a bit rough, too.

Watson crushed their midfield when the game was there to be won.

Those votes are biased crap at best, or worse, complete lack of understanding of the game of football.

No idea, but seriously, why the outrage? I disagree with the votes, but I don't feel the need to become all high and mighty about it
