It might be early. But next year will see us contend. And seeing as crickey season began at 11.00pm last Friday night - here it is. All you hawk fans lurking. Read this and weep.

B: Zuthrie, Henderson, Bews
HB: Stewart, Taylor, Tuohy
C: Duncan, J Selwood, Menegola
HF: Motlop, Hawkins, Parfitt
FF: Cockatoo, Buzza, Stringer
R: Smith, Dangerfield, Ablett
IB: Guthrie, Blicavs, S Selwood, Kolo

Out: Stringer
In: D.Smith

The rest I completely agree with.

I'm a bit worried about Narkle, he's a small mid that relied on his pace, and that knee reco will set him back a bit.

I can't understand how people don't have Jake Kolodjashnij in our best 2018 backline, especially now that Lonergan is retired and Taylor is getting on.

Couple of questions based on last two GF winners:

-Where does one buy a...."mosquito fleet?"
-Is playing land of the giants a viable path to a flag?

No and we need to stop picking a tall side.

What do other posters think about Gregson and McCarthy next year ? how good can they be if they stay fit ?
They dont have to be anything special all they have to do is apply pressure and either lock the ball in our forward line or cause a turnover, Richmonds smalls do nothing on the scoreboard more often than not.

Bews Henderson Stewart
Tuohy Taylor Cockatoo
Duncan S.Selwood Guthrie
Smith Hawkins Stringer
Motlop Dangerfield Menzel
Smith J.Selwood Ablett
Parfitt McCarthy Menegola Buzza
Emer. Zuthrie Blicavs Kolo Gregson Parsons Ruggles Gardner House Simpson Abbott Henry draftees

Lang Stanley Thurlow murder ghs gone
Look at that attacking high scoring football team
I like it. Not much forward tackling pressure. Not needed. We got goal kickers there. :D

A couple of ideas ruminating in my head.

The trend we've seen - is that when danger or selwood have been out, the lesser lights have lifted. Given richmonds success with a smaller forward line and our need for a second "tall" forward, I reckon we could revamp by

*having danger play as a permanent full forward with the occasional run through the middle. A midfield of
Selwood, selwood, Duncan, ablett, menegola and Cam Guthrie - with Blicavs tagging - is still a top 4 midfield.

*i loved what I saw Of Jermaine Jones in the VFL this year. Another big preseason, and he could play the genuine small forward crumbling role. A front 6 with
Hawkins, Dangerfield, cockatoo, parfitt, jones the resting mid (ablett/menegola) is quality.

*back 6 of Henderson, taylor, Stewart, Bews, Tuohy and Zuthrie is quick and good. It's more mobile than this years back 6.

Buzza is the 2nd forward we want, he tackles and can give Smith a chop out.

Ablett/Danger as a HFF, getting up the ground and dishing off to our runners, dont want those hungry players deep forward.

Hawkins as a get out of jail kick not the main target.

Can only play 1 of Scooter, Menegola and Blicavs. They are one paced and lack skills. Scooter is the best of the 3. Replace the other 2 with outside players.

We need a better plan for CHF than a pick 69 project player... has to be our focus one way or another this trade period.

Imo the structure and plan will work. What a missing is the true trust and dedication to the team. There are about 6 blokes that put in that ultimate team first attitude and 2 of them just retired.

Until the group play selfless footy - or are allowed to play selfless footy - we will have issues. It’s not just the players - it’s the whole place.

I’m sorry but the coaches walk off after the PF final loss and having to be reminded about Domsy and Mackie is not the sign of a selfless and unifed place.

It’s easily corrected and does not require massive changes but is a missing factor for us

Go Catters

The thing that i hope Richmond and last year's dogs have shown Geelong is not so much a mobile high pressure forward line ( it is important ) but a total and committed buy in from every player irrespective of ability to work hard to pressure the opposition and to support a team mate. Until Geelong as a list, not just the 22 who take the field do this we will continue to be found wanting in finals.

Bews Gardiner* Stewart
Tuohy Henderson C . Guthrie
Duncan J Selwood Thurlow
Cockatoo Hawkins Motlop
Jones Dangerfield Parfit
Smith Menegola Lang
INT- Buzza Z Guthrie S.Selwood Simpson

* Or Taylor. I'm not convinced that Harry can play on the big forwards close to goal anymore- Lynch, Kennedy, Daniher etc. Henderson plays his best across the half back line working back into D50. Gardiner may not be good enough but this is the role he has been groomed for, if not now when?
The side I've picked is less about the names and more about the structure and size I'd like to see the team go with. Acknowledge that some won't be there ( Menzel, motts etc) and some might not be up to it (Jones, Simpson )

This.

The last two sides to win the flag are unquestionably not the most talented, they were simply the hardest working, the most united. Relentless pressure is the key, our players don't wish to work hard enough. Call it the coaches or leaders responsibility, it's cultural.

We are way, WAY off what's required.

The best side in 2018 is the one that's team orientated and isn't waiting for other's to do the hard stuff so they can run forward of the footy.. We lack tough, hard blue collar types. Too many Guthrie / Motlop / Menzel wannabe rock stars - look good first, everything else second.

Absolutely. And people are too quick to conflate Richmond and last year's Doggos who were very much dependant on big performances from two talls in the Granny.

The frustrating thing is that we've shown it - our wins v Bulldogs, Adelaide, Richmond and GWS this season were four quarter efforts in which you could have named 15-18 players in our bests.

But then we have games like the three game losing streak early in the season, the Freo game at home and the second Collingwood game where nobody seems to know what they're meant to be doing and we rely on the individual brilliance of Dangerfield and/or others to hopefully scrape home.

The frustrating thing is that we've shown it -

We showed our best when our backs were against the wall - coming off 3 losses + media pressure (Dogs, Adelaide), then the threat of going out in straight sets (again) in finals (Sydney).

When the threat of embarrassment is no.1 the driver to get your side to it's best, you're in strife...

This side doesn't want to win a premiership bad enough as it stands.

The IF is the issue.
Their whole careers so far are "high"lighted by injuries.
Without knowing their intrinsic collagen status, it is a wait and see.
What we do know is that when Linc is fit, he does make a difference.
Tigers having ZERO injuries coming into both their GF's is absolutely exceptional

Interesting call I saw someone make in one of the other threads was Stewart forward in a Max Rooke role.
He can mark overhead, I wouldn't rule it out, that is a creative move, it might work as a swing role, he will get figured out eventually as a forward if he was there permanently. You can play Zuthrie in his position down back, he is good enough.

starts from the top. Cats squad players not allowed in rooms during finals pre game and half time. Poor culture.
How about Menzel turning his back on teammates and rolling ball along ground getting ready for goal shot in pre lim when 40 metres out(he missed) no intention of setting up to a teammate like Richmond would do. Learnt this trick off danger who does it as well. No team first attitude its all about me.
