Bearing in mind improvement etc, whats our best 22 next year? For the purposes of this excercise, dont just name the premiership. Allow for improvement, ageing etc...predict...This is what I reckon...

B: Harley, Scarlett, Djerrkura
HB: Mackie, Egan, Milburn
C: Wojcinsky, Corey, Varcoe
HF: Chapman, N.Ablett, S.Johnson
FF: Hawkins, Mooney, Stokes
R: Ottens, Ablett, Bartel
IB: Blake, Selwood, Ling, Rooke

Notes... I think West will be a lot closer to pushing Blake out of the side than most people realise. Blake still has a long way to go in terms of pace, kicking skills and decision making. Was a line ball decision between Kelly and Rooke...both great players. I think new blood will need to come into the team, thus Djerrkura in the pocket and Varcoe on a wing. That is provided they both have a great preseason. Hawkins will be a gun up forward with a full preaseason under his belt. Another rising star award coming our way... I can feel it...I think unless there are injuries, the natrual improvement we will see in the likes of Varcoe,Djerrkura, Tenace, Davenport etc will make it hard for Byrnes to get a game. Enright and Hunt are both great players, who in all reality will most likely be in the side, but looking at a full list, assuming younger guys are going to come in, its hard to find a spot for them... Anyway... what do you all think?

B : Tom Harley Matthew Scarlett Darren Milburn
HB: Andrew Mackie Matthew Egan David Wojcinski
C: Joel Corey Jimmy Bartel Corey Enright
HF: Steve Johnson Cameron Mooney Joel Selwood
F: Paul Chapman Nathan Ablett Matthew Stokes
R: Brad Ottens Cameron Ling Gary Ablett
I: Mark Blake James Kelly Max Rooke Josh Hunt
E: Travis Varcoe Brent Prismall Tom Hawkins Nathan Djerrkura
IN: Blake Egan
OUT: King Byrnes

That is best Geelong side for the start of 2008, the one that had a total winning margin for three finals of 230+ points! The only changes are those dictated by injuries/trades (i.e. egan and king).

The Emergencies will all push for selection and bet he first players in if and when injuries occur. Tenace will be looking at getting his confidence and fitness up even further so he can try and have a crack at the senior side again.

I think you are an absolute toolkit for dropping Enright.

Hunt has his critics (with me one of them in the past) but played the game of his life GF day. He is probably the weakest link in that side but this is because teams try and isolate him 1 out in the goal square and he is not a natural 1 out, last line defender. Not many we could bring in who are though.

Kelly had an very good season, don't see why you would drop him (or how you could justify it)?

Funny how people are so keen to change the side even when we are winning. If this same team could stay fit and healthy for 2008, they will go back to back. We are just lucky that the emergency line looks to have on it some kids who can play.

don't see much change from this year at his stage.

In: Egan,
Out: Hunt

Other spots depend on form. Varcoe for Byrnes maybe, but Trav needs a big improvement in 2008.

it will be interesting to see how Hawkins, Prismall, Tenace, Djerrkura, and DJ go about getting a regular game in the 1sts

I see what you are trying to do, and it is of course likely that the team will change as some members of the younger playing group push for selection in the seniors, but we should really be trying to predict form drops. Kelly on a forward flank is a great contributor, I can't really see how you could consider dropping him based on 07 form. Enright is such a massive part of one of the great strengths of our team, attacking defenders who are willing to go for their marks, and who is often involved in our link runs out of defense. I would have him in my top dozen at Geelong and cannot come up with a single reason you could consider dropping him.

My team would look almost identical to Scootydeewah with Hunt the likely player working hardest to maintain his spot. What an amazing feeling to look through the best 22 and barely find a weakness, was a fantastic year!

No doubt that Enright and Kelly are guns. I wasnt trying to say they arent great players. Simply trying to create thinking, discussion over possibe changes. Most teams that go back to back have fresh blood. Its inevitable that some guys will not play 1's if younger guys step up. For me, Hunt is a great player, but his lack of pace and at times bad decision making hurts him. Kelly had an outstanding year and I really hope he goes from strength to strength, but if one of those "running" type players is to go, I can't see Bartel, Ablett, Corey, Selwood etc going... I could be wrong and injuries will play a part too. I also rate Enright very highly, but his disposal and decision making has in the past let him down in comparison to similar players. Again, as said in first post, I'm sure both will probably play 1's, just thinking outside the square...

Am I the only person who would leave out Woja? If he plays like he did in the finals series, he'll be in the twos for large parts of next season, IMO. Either Hawkins or Gamble could be in the team, I picked Gamble because of his form in the pre-season when it looked as though he'd be playing a lot in the firsts, before his injury. Near impossible to find people to drop, though.

We had a very good run with injuries in '07 - don't assume we will be in the same position in '08. Great if we are, but not very likely.

I think all these players will get their chance throughout the season based on that, and if they play well when they do, well, they'll stay there.

What's wrong with that? I agree that I wouldn't probably play him down there as a 19yo, and I think in the long term his best position will probably be on a wing or in the guts, but I can also see him as a Wirrpanda-style back pocket later on in his career.

No only is this the 100% correct opinion, it's also what would happen If everyone was fit.

OK, my go here.....

B: Egan Scarlett J.Hunt

HB: Milburn Harley Enright

C: Corey Bartel Selwood

HF: S.Johnson Mooney P.Chapman

F: Stokes N.Ablett Hawkins

R: Ottens Ling G.Ablett

INT: Davenport Mackie Rooke Blake

just an idea....... I just think that Dav and Hawkins are primed to step up full time; Dav is ready made; blistering pace...word that ive heard about Hawkins is that there will be an emphasis on conditioning...so i think hell be right...

if ive forgotten anyone, please tell me...

I like the idea of ommitting Hunt and Brynes, and bringing in Egan and Prismall. Egan will play at CHB obviously, and move Kelly to brynes role (he has proven this season to be a good half-forward/link man) and Prismal can then step in for Kelly in the midfield. Obviously its a bit untried, but could work.

I think that you cannot possibly be serious.

Are you on the same medication as Ben Cousins?

He'll certainly get more opportunities next season you would think.

I'll go with something like...

B: Harley - Scarlett - Hunt
HB: Mackie - Egan - Milburn
C: Enright - Bartel - Corey
HF: S.Johnson - Mooney - Chapman
F: N.Ablett - Hawkins - Stokes
R: Ottens - Ling - G.Ablett
I/C: Rooke - Blake - Selwood - Kelly

Egan is automatic, and I seriously expect Hawkins to be part of the team next year.
