Can't believe no one has mentioned Freddie Mercury yet. He is the greatest singer of all time. He could hit any note with perfection.

Freddie Mercury > All

Other great singers include:

Layne Staley
Chris Cornell
Eddie Vedder

Michael Hutchence, Mike Patton and Bryan Ferry

Oliver Hartmann, formerly of At Vance, has got the best voice I've heard. Great songs by the band too, with some virtuoso guitar playing to boot.

Ronnie James Dio is my favourite singer though... just exudes power from his 4ft 10, 66 year old frame, and through the extensive VHS and DVD footage I have, he has stage presence that belies a geriatric mutant dwarf with undeniably golden tonsils.

I got another, that guy with the really weird hair from Static X, great voice he has :thumbsu:

I always find amusing the 'true' or 'real' Metalhead. It seems they judge their 'truth' or 'realness' by how much they hate Heavy bands they don't feel to be 'true' or 'real' Metal. True Metaldom doesn't come from how much you hate Korn and Slipknot. True Metaldom comes from a) your loyalty to the genre, sticking with it through thick and thin over the years, and b) acceptance of the fact that there are MYRIAD different styles/sub-genres within Heavy music, all of which can be appreciated.
There certainly are a bunch of "heavy" genres out there... but that doesnt mean theyre all metal. Nor do they all deserve "appreciation". Metal is a genre that adheres to very rigid guidelines. Just because you downtune your guitar to C# and scream into a microphone, doesnt make you "metal". The people you are attacking, the "true" metalheads who adhere to more strict standards as far as metal goes, do it because, in reality, bands like Korn or Slipknot have more in common with rock than they do with metal. And it bothers them (rightfully so), that these bands write two chord hit songs and quickly strike it big, while the less popular bands spend weeks studying scales, chord progressions, etc, just to write a single song, and have to make their way in the world by playing nightly gigs in small music clubs. Theres no justice to it. But then again, metal has never been pop either, so its understandable.

As for the topic of the thread, "best singers"... assuming it excludes extreme metal vocalists, Id probably go with the almighty Lemmy.

Australias pretty blessed when it comes to good singing voices Top 3 Aussie voices would be

1. Daniel Johns
2. Pete Murray
3. Alex Lloyd

As far as chicks go Amy Lee from Evanescence is so far ahead of the others it isnt funny. Shes the only womans voice I like

Bruce Dickinson, Jeff Buckley, Chris Cornell, Freddie Mercury, gotta put Arraya...

I'm an absolutely massive Metallica fan but I'd never go close to saying that Hetfield is my favourite singer. He does have a really good voice on the 80s albums and in parts in the 90s but I don't listen to Metallica for his supurb vocal stylings because his voice is pretty basic.

Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden) probably gets the nod. Love Matt Barlow's voice (Iced Earth) as it has a lot of strength in it without needing to get too fancy. I reckon he'd have made a great singer for Metallica if, in some hypothetical world, that was the case. Rob Halford (Judas Priest) also sings a fair note. If I am in a more relaxed mood then Dave Gilmour/Roger Waters do me well/

Mikael Akerfeldt (opeth) - has a great scream, probably 2nd best to Jon Davis of KoRn, but only has a sream, not much else.

There's so much wrong with this sentence I dunno where to start. Jon Davis' atrocious singing aside, what do mean Akerfeldt "only has a scream, not much else"!? You haven't heard his clean singing on the 'Ghost Reveries' album, obviously, because you wouldn't say something so ignorant otherwise.

I'd have Cornell, Vedder, Akerfeldt, Patton, and Scott Walker as my top five at the moment.

Greg Graffin

You think so? BR are my fave band but GG is starting to sound as if he's more and more limited...have you heard his rootsy Cold as the Clay solo album?

Two more votes for Cornell & Patton, and does anyone remember the Portishead chick? I loved her voice - very haunting.
