Best singing voices ever?

Nat King Cole. Legend has it (well, a story on a documentary) that he didn't even want to be a singer, he just wanted to play jazz piano, which is what he did at first. His jazz band had regular gig at a bar, and one day the owner of the bar said that they had to get a singer or lose the gig. So, given no one else was available, or they didn't want to pay an extra member, Nat started singing, and the rest is history

The wonderful tone of Nat's singing voice probably came from his heavy smoking habit, which most unfortunately led to his death at age 45.

Probably a similar story with Matt Monro as well, although he was an alcoholic too!

If we're going to be honest this would be a thread about opera singers. Leaving them aside -

Men: Elvis, Chris Cornell
Women: Judith Durham, Dusty Springfield, Sandy Denny (no mentions yet), Patsy Cline.

Great singers have effortless power.

I have a great Nat King Cole story to share.

When Nat bought a house in an all white suburb of L.A., his new neighbours told him they did not want any "undesirables" moving into the neighbourhood. Nat said, "Neither do I. And if I see any undesirables coming in here, I'll be the first to let you know."
