personally i think John Lennon was a great songwriter.

I didn't really like his music, but i can read his lyrics and they really make sense to me.

Who was your favourite songwriter?

There's plenty of good lyricists in my CD collection so I wouldn't want to pick one out (especially seeing nobody will have heard of them). The worst is definitely Roger Glover who wrote a lot of the lyrics for Deep Purple and Rainbow. He was shit.

Without a doubt the two greatest songwriters of all time are John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

No one esle gets close. As for modern music, Noel Gallagher can certainly write a tune. But there really should be no more discussion in this thread as its obvious that what i have stated above is the truth :)

Good choice definetly THE best of all time but there is alot of other bands with some great lyrics: babylon a.d, Creed, Something for kate, Jebs, 3DD etc etc I think it all comes down to taste. before anyone has a sad because i said creed or jebs are the best song writers don't bother im not saying that only that i feel their lyrics appeal to me personally :)

This thread is going a bit off course since it's about who is the best song writer and were saying who the best bands are.. well i'll fix this problem :)

Franz Schubert 1797-1828

Nobody can beat him for sheer quantity and quality of output.

Literally thousands of songs - each and every one a shining testiment to his brilliance.

... and he died at 28.

Other notables

Cole Porter
Irving Berlin
Paul McCartney
Leonard Cohen
Joni Mitchell

Lennon was a great poet, but, musically speaking he had no idea.

cheers

Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath - there is not a heavy metal riff in the universe that was not written by this man and copied and fiddled with, and eventually credited to others.

Before him, that deaf pox-ridden old fart Beethoven could also put a few decent tunes together. ;)

I bleieve you cant beat Brandon Boyd of Incubus. The guy is amazing...has an amazing voice, writes amazing songs ,and his band is amazing!

I dont know WCE2000, i get into a wide range of music, i have been known to listen and enjoy classical music like Mozart, Beethoven and i have a lot of Soundtrack CD's with scores by John Williams, James Horner and my personal favourite Hans Zimmer. These guys write great music and can say alot without even using words....quite brilliant.

For whoever mentioned Bob Dylan, good call. Totally forgot about him, now he can write a tune.

Lennon/McCartney

Bob Dylan
