Name should have been changed to AFL in 1987.

Strange they changed it in 1990 there were no new teams in the comp that season.
Commentary team today mentioned that it was the 32nd year of the AFL era (Luke Darcy I think). That takes us back to 1987 and the introduction of West Coast and Brisbane. I suppose that's right, even though 1990 is when the name change occurred.

The worst team in AFL era is probably between Melbourne, Carlton and Richmond. Melbourne probably take the cake. Freo are close too.

Best overall has been Hawthorn losing only the one GF, and beating both sides below during their peaks.

Cats second but that 07/08/09 side was the strongest AFL team to lace up imo.

Eagles third- Beating that great Cats team but with pretty unfair concessions and great if not all time team in the mid 00's

Brisbane- Fantastic all round side but once again, concessions and ladder position suggested they always over achieved (which is great in its own right). Very average asides from that great 4/5 years sees them fourth though..

It's ironic that as powerful as Hawthorn has been for decades, there is actually a 10 year stretch in the AFL era between 97 and 06 where Hawthorn along with Richmond were the worst performing sides having only played in 1 final series each. Both sides only played finals in 2001. Even Freo played in more finals series!

Really interesting about the hawks. Kinda shows Equalization definitely works, if a team is down for years it’s almost inevitable they eventually come storming back.

You can't call a side that has won a premiership worse than a side who hasn't.
