Grendel,

When you think about it, "Rover" doesn't mean anything.

If you read the rules of Australian football, terms such as "rover, full-forward, ruck etc" are not actually in the rules of the game. They are made up by us, the fans and the media over the 100 years of Australian Football.

All the players are treated the same. Any of the 18 players on the ground can pick up the ball. Any of them can go anywhere all over the ground (no offside rule obviously), so I don't really know what the term rover is suppposed to mean nowadays.

I suppose it's just the guy who the ruckman taps the ball to, but this can be any number of about 6 players.

I just see the game as 18 players who all have the right to go wherever they want on the field and all have the same right to chase the ball- whether they are tall or small. It's just how the coaches use these tall and small players that determines how the game is played.

Dan normally you make sense but in this one and i see where your coming from in this. Its like theyve been supplanted but there are still a few true rovers out there to keep up the great tradition of Platten,Weightman,Wilson,Bartlett the list goes on.

There are pure rovers still in league footy. The small blokes that outwit, ferret and burrow. The ones that can skirt a pack or dive inbetween the legs of one and still get that ball.

History is littered with them, there will always be a place for them. Long live the true rover. They might not be as numerous as days gone by but they still survive.

"The guy the ruckman taps to"?
Who is this supposed "ruckman" you are referring to. I don't see him in the rules of the game. Can anyone play this position? This player i know of- Tony Liberatore- can't tell u his position b/c it's not in the rules of the game, but would he be able to play this "rucking - man" u refer to sir? I mean since they can play ANY where can't they?

dan- i'm just being petty and trying to stir ya ok

Hum....hope we pick up some good kids in the draft......

Pretty much agree Shinboners... but Watts Cochrane Lasscock and Woodley should be given a chance to strut their stuff next year... especially WATTS...

Agree with you there Rooboy. Plenty of people have been raving about Watt, and with a few regulars now retired or traded away, then maybe a few kids will get more of a go. I'm especially keen to see Lasscock and Woodley in the seniors though....I saw Woodley take a spectacular mark (like what Winnie used to do on a weekly basis in '98) and apparantly WCE were very annoyed that we picked up Lasscock (apparantly they were hoping to keep him under wraps and then pick him up in the upcoming draft).

Still, the side looks so unbalanced in terms of experience....most of the team seems to be either in the 150+ game category or the 50 games or less one....we seem to have few of those 80-120 midrange ones...y'know, 22/23 year olds who are set to start the best years of their career. The team is solid, but is unspectacular.....oh, what we wouldn't give for a fully fit 22 year old Wayne Carey! Or two.

Ok here goes

Vardy, Robran, Perrie
Welsh, Hewitt, Jarman

Biglands, Goodwin, McLeod

Marsh, Crowell, Bode, Eccles

I'm not sure about Hewitt & Bode. I just put them in because we picked them up last month.

I can hear you all quaking in your boots now!!!!!

Shinboners, Strange as this may sound but with both Wakelins leaving, a gaping hole has been left in our defense. Last year Daryl was the dutch boy sticking his finger in the dyke trying to stop the tidal wave of opposition attacks.

Moving Hall to chb is an obvious option, Gehrig will spend some time in defense as will Capuano drifting back from the ruck contests.

I think Max will have to eat plenty of beef over the summer to be a key postion player. Maybe he needs to visit Justin Charles or get some tips off the Bulgarian weight lifting team, one thing is certain though he will give everything.

Just off the top of my head :

B : Seymour Dunkley Schauble
HB : Luff Saddington Matthews
C : Maxfield Kelly Stevens
HF : Nicks O'Loughlin McPherson
F : Ahmat Goodes Lewis
1R : Stafford Schwass Cresswell

Inter / Emerg from : Ball, Fosdike, Crouch, Barry, Williams, Bolton and Warfe

Drakey

At the rate that you're getting ex-North players, I'll soon have a soft spot for your team

STL

I agree with what you say about the hole in defence left by the Wakelin twins, but I'm surprised that you put Hudghton as full back in your team (although it wouldn't surprise me in the least if Blight did it
biggrin.gif
). I'm not too sure what other options you might have...Leowe at full back maybe?

I agree with Hall at CHB...he has the presence and strength to hold down that position and he did well to hold Carey when you guys played us late last season. The goal-to-goal line of the Saints with <someone at full back>-Hall-Burke-Gehrig-Everitt with Capuano and Leowe alternating in the ruck looks pretty strong to me.

West Coast Eagles:

Back Line: David Wirrpunda, Ashley McIntosh, Michael Collica
Halfback Line: Michael Prior, Glen Jakovich, Chad Morrison
Centre: Peter Matera, Dean Kemp, Michael Braun
Half Foward Line: Chad Fletcher, David Sierakowski, Andrew Williams
Forward Line: Phil Matera, Scott Cummings, Phil Read
Ruckman: Michael Gardiner, Drew Banfield
Rover: Ben Cousins
Interchange: Darren Glass, Richard Taylor, Ryan Turnbull, Andrew Embley.

On Paper our starting 22 is not bad, however it is very delicately balanced and a run of injuries half as bad as this year, will see the team fall in a heap. For instance if 2 midfielders are injured, then this will most probably push Morrison and Collica into the midfield, leaving a big hole in the backline. No matter who fills it, it will leave a very unexpierienced backline, which will get trampled.
