Best test XI since WSC

My team:

1.Justin Langer
2. Geoff Marsh
3. Greg Chappell
4. Allan Border (c)
5. Ricky Ponting
6. Steve Waugh
7. Adam Gilchrist (wk)
8. Shane Warne
9. Dennis Lillee
10. Geoff Lawson
11. Glenn McGrath
12th Michael Clarke

Geoff Marsh, who’s four test centuries is one more than Shaun Pollock’s, if you count the hundred he scored in an unofficial test against India?

Geoff Marsh who’s four test centuries is equal to Sherwin Campbell’s test centuries?

Geoff Marsh who’s entire catalogue of test centuries, for his career, was matched by Virat Kohli in the space of 3 tests last time India came to Australia?

Test:

Langer
Hayden
Ponting
G Chappell
S Waugh
Border (c)
Gilchrist (+)
Johnson
Warne
Lillee
McGrath

12th man Clarke

ODI's:

Hayden
Gilchrist (+)
Ponting (c)
Clarke (such an underrated ODI player)
Symonds
Hussey
Bevan
Lee
Warne
Bracken
McGrath

And I'll throw in a second XI for the ODI's:

Watson
M Waugh
Jones
Smith
I Chappell (c)
S Waugh
Haddin (+)
Johnson
Starc
Hogg
McDermott

I'd be getting Symmo to bowl meds in that ODI side, Clarke and/or Bevan can also bowl spin.

Mark Waugh over Hayden every day of the week in ODI’s
Gilly and Hayden have the most runs of any Australian opening partnership, have the second highest average of all partnerships (min 20 innings), and the difference between the two opening are indistinguishable, so it's hardly "every day of the week". You can prefer Waugh, I prefer Hayden.

Yep same for me except G Chappell in for Waugh. S Waugh somewhat overrated - average massively inflated by an obscene amount of not outs (about double of others batting his position) because he fed the tail to the lions. Smith has already surpassed Waugh and could become BBBB (Best bat behind Bradman)

Johnson an interesting one. At his peak was the most frightening Auusie quick I've seen. Gillespie stiff.

Boon was the best bat in the world at one point in the early 90's - gun.

Don't down grade his value as an opener to cricket for Australia with statistics. I wish he was still available.
As for Mr Kholi I always thought the best batsmen in world cricket of any era batted no.3, but yes he's ******* good.

Yeah on 2nd thoughts I’d sub in Chappell as well, for some reason thought his spell of bad form ~ 1981 went for longer than it actually did. And as someone else mentioned earlier in the thread, given the capability of Warne/McGrath/DK, easier to afford the risk/reward of Johnson.

so we've only got a few challengers to my XI.

looks like an opening position and the 3rd quick (the only 2 spots that were really debated)

taylor, slater, langer, boon, g.marsh being mentioned.

steve smith was the only challenger in the middle order it seems.

johnson, harris, mcdermott, lawson, alderman only mentioned as a 3rd quick.

Hussey and Clarke could be middle order challenges, however it's hard to get past the record of the "big 4"

Thereis actually a big 5 in the middle order if Smith is included. Border, Chappell, Ponting and S Waugh.

He would be a project player, picked on potential, and his ability to bowl a few wicketless overs.

yeah no doubt smith will make his way into this XI at some point you'd think. the challenge for me will be who i then have to make way for him.
i'm thinking border or s.waugh. , but again i'd need to sleep on it. maybe it'd be m hussey but i'd have to rearrange the batting order and with only one "specialist" opener (not ideal).

Honestly don't think Hussey has played enough games as an opener to qualify, and he'd be behind Taylor, Langer, Jacques, hell, even Warner for me as an opener.

For me Border was the best Aus bat I've seen.

Better against all types of bowling. As much, if not more courage than Waugh. Far better player of genuine pace than anyone bar Ponting. Eclipses Ponting against spin.

Anyone who made runs against the Windies at their peak AND on the subcontinent is just elite IMO. Also remember Border opening in ODIs and tearing into attacks. Just a gun.
