Opinion Best under 23yr Team

It's really quite impressive that you've managed to bend logic and mathematics to find a way to mention a 26 year old Henry Slattery in a response to "which players at your club are younger than 23?"
I was referring to the players who were born in 86 or 87, and Slattery was born in 86 if you actually read what I posted

Team of players born 1988 or later (senior games in brackets):

B: Bews Gillies (8) T.Hunt (21)

Foll: Simpson (3) Selwood (115) Christensen (20)

Indeed you did write that, and I did read it. The bit that baffles me is how you concluded that talking about a 26 year old is relevant, considering the title of the thread.

I was talking about players who missed out by a year or 2, for the 2011 thread criteria was born 87 or after- I was just pointing out players who were born a year or 2 earlier. Why make a fuss about it?

Brennan's on the bench. Was either him or Wilson

You've selected a strong team as well. Plenty of excitement for Eagles fans between now and 2020 *fingers crossed*

Went without Newman and Wilson in the 22 because they are virtually untried at AFL (except NAB Cup) and we had sufficient players to cover there position in the 22.

Brennan i rate ahead of Wilson atm. Could debut as soon as this weekend

I rated Newman behind Hill, Dick and Weedon because he still has some developing to do. But could super seed an injury prone Dick quite easily

Everyone will have an opinion. Thats the beauty of these things :thumbsu:

I still doubt Schofield capability as a KPD as well thats why i had Brown at FB, forcing Brennan to the bench

Hamp's struggling atm but i rate him highly. Was a steal in the rookie draft of 2010. Got dropped from Claremont 1s but is a handy future HFF i think. Big engine. Just needs to bulk up

Of players aged 22 and under on the day of writing, this is the extent of Hawthorn's list that is currently of senior AFL standard. We have a significant cohort in the 23 to 25 age range, so for list management purposes, the club really needs about 6 of the 11 players named here to have 150 game careers.
Other teams would certainly have a better looking under 23 lineup than Hawthorn's, but Hawthorn is trying to peak between now and 2016, taking advantage of the prime years of Hodge, Mitchell, and Franklin.

6 of the 11 have had 150 game careers. Savage mostly at St Kilda, but the other five held down important roles during the threepeat that started the year after my quoted post.

Wild that I thought that Boumann was an AFL player. His career yielded a grand total of10 possessions.

Using 98 as the cut-off:

FB: Cody Brand (0) - Brandon Zerk-Thatcher (14) - Cian McBride* (0)
HB: Jordan Ridley (33) - Zach Reid (1) - Thomas Hird* (0)
MF: Nikolas Cox (8) - Jye Caldwell (13) - Brayden Ham (23)
HF: Archie Perkins (6) - Harrison Jones (8) - Ned Cahill (5)
FF: Lachlan Johnson (0) - Kaine Baldwin* (0) - Irving Mosquito (4)
OB: Sam Draper (10) - Andrew McGrath (86) - Dylan Clarke (20)
IC: Nick Bryan (1) - Josh Eyre (0)

Games in brackets, rookies with the *. Very tall side, but that'll probably change more at the end of the year.

That's a good collection of young talent... I'd say up to ten of them will have decent careers. Good positional spread, also.

Essendon sides in recent years have tended to look decent on paper but never exceed middle of the road in practice. Jakey Stringer and co aren't going to break that cycle, but the players you mentioned above are in with a chance.

I'd take half right now. Very confident on McGrath (who has already made it obviously), Ridley (same), Reid, Cox, Perkins, Jones, Draper and Bryan based on what I've seen. Ham is in a decent position but the key will be getting one of Brand/Zerk/McBride making it in defence and Eyre or Baldwin making it forward. Caldwell's hammies are very concerning.

As this thread demonstrates, plenty of forecasts don't work out. But yeah, 6 of the first 7 players you listed are all playing competent footy in the seniors, so it's certainly not as speculative as any Hawthorn list I'd make. Another couple of good draftees in the next two years, and you've got a core that you can certainly work with. Hawthorn's miles away from being able to boast a similar lineup.

Damon Greaves, Denver Grainger-Barras*, Jack Scrimshaw*
Will Day*, Changkuoth Jiath*, Connor Downie#
Dylan Moore, James Worpel*, Harry Morrison#
Oliver Hanrahan, Jacob Koschitzke#, Seamus Mitchell#
Tyler Brockman#, Mitch Lewis#, Emerson Jeka#
Ned Reeves#, James Cousins, Finn Maginness
Connor Downie#, Josh Morris, Conor Nash, Lachlan Bramble#

I'm confident on the ones I've put stars next to, and open-minded about the ones I've hashed. The rest of them strike me as very limited. Since Hawthorn is currently the second worst team in the league, it's not a very exciting looking pipeline yet.

Except Duncan, Guthrie, Hawkins, Selwood and Varcoe that entire list was overrated. It’s a shock how so many of them are still in the league or were for a very long time.
Menzel, Vardy and Christensen were all from the same draft year as Duncan but did not work out for one reason or another, but they all had the talent.

Motlop is a bit unlucky to not make your list of 'passes' also, he was okay, and still has his moments.

Burbury was one I was bullish about, but never got his mojo back after a nasty injury (jaw?).

It is a bit strange seeing one of your posts after nearly 10 years. Cheers for the reply!

Honestly, it really isn't anything special. Weitering is the only one in that defence who isn't below average or completely untested (although he is elite).
The midfield is basically just Walsh, untested and below average players.
The forward line is McKay (elite), Fisher (good), and some okay to poor players.
Bench is terrible.

If a team's under 23s are being matched by this side, they'd be somewhat concerned about the quality among their youth. Weitering, Walsh and McKay are all borderline elite, if not already there, but the rest is largely crap or untried.

Backline contains 3 best 22 players (Gardner, Williams, Richards) with Williams one of our best players.
Midfield has some quality, but our best mids are around the 24-26 age bracket now. Smith, Vandermeer and Lipinski regularly play in the 22.
Forward line has some serious quality (Naughton, English, McNeil all best 22) with Naughton one of our best players.

Overall, there's probably anywhere from 8-10 best 22 players in this list depending on how we structure up.

It works out sometimes. The tigers team posted above in 2012 has much of the core of the 17/19/20 Richmond teams.

Most clubs can make the case they have a good collection of young players. Suns and swans look handy going forward.
