Opinion Best & Worst Crows Players of the Decade

Remove this Banner Ad

Strongly disagree. Rested on his laurels from 2009 and pretty much phoned it in for 4 years before being (rightfully) shipped off and pulling his finger out. He was pretty close to my worst 10 list.

If we exclude both players best years (2009 for Vince and 2010 for Douglas) I'd say Vince was the better player the rest of the time, even though he phoned it in. I'd say both had a single really good season, a couple of other decent seasons and were average the rest of the time

Very harsh on Douglas, seeing his 2013 was damn productive.

Best:

1. Rory Sloane - He's been here for the entire decade. Dual B&F winner, AA, captain and bleeds for the club. A real workhorse who's contributed the most of any Crow this decade.

2. Patrick Dangerfield - Doesn't get #1 due to leaving after 2015 even though he's the best player we've had this decade. No one can deny the impact that he had here. One of the most dynamic players we've had who already established himself as an elite player of the comp before moving. 3x AA as a Crow and a B&F.

3. Daniel Talia - Ultra consistent defender who is rarely beaten. 2x AA and has made a name for himself as one of the premier KPDs of the comp.

4. Eddie Betts - Injected excitement into the club which we hadn't seen for years. An instant fan-favourite and transformed himself into the best small forward of the comp. 3 consecutive AAs, 4x leading goal keeper and an immortal highlights reel. It's a shame he's gone back to Carlton but a brilliant player.

5. Scott Thompson - His peak was in the first half of the decade, especially 2011-2014. He went on a couple of years too long but that doesn't undermine his achievements.

6. Taylor Walker - He never reached the heights he could've due to his ACL but, a captain who led us through its darkest period, as well as being our leading goalscorer ensures he has a place on this list. To think otherwise is just being contrary for the sake of it.

7. Sam Jacobs - He should've been AA at least once this decade (2012 comes to mind). Carried our ruck department for basically the entire decade with little support.

8. Brodie Smith - I remember some were disappointed when we selected him over Atley at the draft. Hindsight hey? He was one of our most vital players in 2016-17 with his ability to break zones and was also AA in 2014 and a shining light in a disappointing year.

9. Luke Brown - Doesn't have the accolades as the others but he's been an ultra-reliable and consistent small defender for us since he arrived. Regularly gets the job done despite not getting a lot of recognition.

10. Rory Laird - His 2019 was awful but, prior to that, he was one of the best HBs going around in the comp. Back to back AAs prove this and him up and firing was pivotal during our flag tilt.

HM: M. Crouch, Lynch, Douglas (B&F at the start, close in 2013 and has been a solid contributor throughout most of the decade), Rutten

Worst:
1. Curtly Hampton - That game against Richmond is widely regarded as the worst ever by a Crow. Retired that week due to issues with vertigo. Don't get me wrong, vertigo would absolutely suck but let's not forget how bad he was before that. A Giants fan once said there's the amazing Curtly and the WTF Curtly. We certainly saw the latter but I don't recall the former.

2. Bryce Gibbs - He ranks here due to a) the price we paid for him and b) his general shitness. His first 6 matches in 2018 were actually really solid but then it went downhill rapidly. Are the supposed gambling rumours marring his performances? Either way, he ended 2019 with the coveted achievement of being ranked #1 in Mofra's Bottom 50.

3. Richard Tambling - Another player that ranks this high due to what we paid for him. I had high hopes for this guy, I had the impression that he wasn't reaching his potential in a s**t Richmond side and that a change in club would do him a world of good. Got suspended a couple of times in his first year and continued to go backwards. His last game involved a nice running goal but that's the only positive thing he ever did with us.

4. David Mackay - A decade of mediocrity gifted from his 2009 SF vs Collingwood. You could probably count on your hands how many good games he's played. It seems that one good game buys him 20 more.

5. Troy Menzel - Only played 4 games but one of the biggest wastes of talent to put on a Crows guernsey. Thankfully Kerridge did nothing at Carlton which made this the perfect example of a lose-lose trade. Menzel obviously had more talent than Kerridge but had the dedication of a sloth on valium.

6. Lewis Johnston - Only played 8 games. Came back home after a couple of years at the Swans. Kicked 6 goals one match but that was against Melbourne in 2013 who are considered one of the worst VFL/AFL teams of all-times. It was like kicking a bag against Walkerville Juniors. I most remember him for costing us the second Showdown that year. There's about 3 minutes left and he marks 45-50m near the boundary. Tough shot but not impossible. He had two options: a) chew up 30 seconds and have a shot. For all we know, someone could mark in the square or there could be a stoppage, b) pass it to Danger who was free 20m out. He chose to play on and kick it out on the full and the rest was history.

7. Sam Shaw - Yep, injuries aside, this guy was just flat-stick s**t. If I had a drink for every time he kicked it out on the full, I would've needed a liver transplant.

8. Jared Petrenko - Another guy I had hopes for. Aside from that goal against North which he still managed to to his best to * it up (hacking it out of mid-air meant that it could've gone anywhere), he never did anything of note.

9. Myke Cook - 2010-11 was truly a dark period for the club. This guy, Armstrong, Schmidt, L. Thompson and Symes... shudder. This guy was the worst of the lot. It was like watching a country team pluck a fat, middle-aged drunk from the pub because they were low on numbers. Granted, he had athletic capabilities but he sure as s**t had no football ones.

10. Tony Armstrong - Kudos to his manager for convincing not one, but two other clubs to take him on after us. It was like Marko Marin when he was under Chelsea being loaned around the world before we finally managed to cut our losses with him.

DM: L. Thompson, Schmidt, Symes, Tippett (for the damage he did), Burton (* you), Sellar

8. S. Jacobs
9. B. Smith
10. M. Crouch

The worst:

It didn't take long in the decade to find our worst player. Round 2 - 2010 - I introduce to you Will Young. The worst debut game in the history of the club (could even argue the AFL). Looked like he was concussed from the first bounce because he had no idea where he was and no clue what to do and his opponent kicked 6 on him. Surprisingly he paid a second game in round 21 and had a grand total of 2 kicks (although he did kick a goal). Never saw him again after that - was delisted after 2011 season, and not surprisingly (very Crow like) we picked him up in the rookie draft. He makes Hartigan look like the World's greatest AFL defender.

Daylight second.

The end

He won a TV from Robert Walls for his second game. His reasoning is he because he kept Lumumba quiet, which I guess he did.

Not sure this is a good call. He was ruined by injury - multiple shoulder reco's IIRC.

5. Patrick Dangerfield
Our best player this decade by a stretch. I reckon he cost himself and the club at least 1 premiership by leaving - 2016 at least was there for the taking - and I will never forgive him for that.

Agree for sure. And I still think the 2016 team was better than 2017. Probably would have won it that year if we finished in the top 4 and with Danger, we would have won a premiership by now.

And he has played in 3 losing preliminary finals since. He cannot buy a trick. Maybe in 2020 if they can figure out a way to beat Richmond and co.

He was barely SANFL standard.

I remember one game he played against Centrals at Elizabeth, and Daniel Havelberg (in his first match back from injury), literally walked around him casually to slot an easy goal.

Up there in the top 5 of worst recruits ever at the club, let alone the 2010's, and easily the worst player to put on a Crows guernsey in the 2010's.

Bump

Couple of days remaining to get your votes for best players in :)

I know it's easy to get sidetracked with the reams of preseason training info we get from the club and the incredible access they provide but see if you can spare the time.

Walker our Most valuable player over the decade. We just couldn't imagine it any other way than he as captain after July 3 2015. No club needed a captain more, ever. He functioned as a power forward during this time. Even if his 2012 form wasnt bordering on the Wayne Carey level, his efforts are enough. Pity he did his knee in 2013. Pity about about Walsh. He seemed to get through to walker.

I would rate Thompson our next most valuable. Go back through the rough patches and see who stood up. We've been soft as a midfield since he left. His game in the 2012 prelim epic, the second showdown in 2015...

The rest is really debatable, these two stand out. Talia the head of the next group, still well below the two above level.

For a one season wonder, you'd pick danger fields 2015. His best season for either club. Just not noticed for a few factors. His disposal stopped improving when he moved, for us, every year he made an emohises on his poor at times disposal, premature ejaculatiion of the pill.

Worst is Macay, every day twice on Sunday. Hence why we request Saturday games.
