For English conditions:
1. Dave Warner
2. Ed Cowan
3. Phil Hughes
4. Shane Watson
5. Michael Clark C
6. Usman Khawaja
7. Matthew Wade +
8. James Pattinson
9. Peter Siddle
10. Jackson Bird
11. Nathan Lyon

Starc, Beer, Haddin and the best batsman over rest of Sheffield Shield season to go over there as well.

rofl

That wasn't the batting of a number seven.

Starc and Pattinson must be the luckiest cricketers in history given their batting averages and the number of not outs they appear to be getting. This is hilarious.

You're actually defying logic to support your stupid argument.

They can bat. it's a good thing. Get on board.

It's the frauds above them you have to worry about.

Pattinson has made zero fifties in any form of cricket.

Starc has made two fifties in 36 first class innings, and one fifty in sixteen one day innings.

They can swing the bat with the free abandon bowlers can do. They should not be relied upon for anything other than bowling.

there's a difference between slog sweeping angelo mathews and thisara perera and being a legit bowling allrounder. He does go alright, but he's no number 7

At least he can slog sweep.

i'll take that.

That represents an improvement on what the cowards above him are providing at the moment.

Starc actually has a test 68* and has top scored in the last 2 matches Australia has played resulting in a test average of 30+ and an ODI average of 58.5 with the bat @ 103 SR. But noooo of course he isn't a bowling all rounder. Couldn't be. At 22 his batting has obviously peaked. There is no way he will get better.

As for Pattinson, he scored 42* & 29 in his last 2 test digs against the #1 team in the world.

In tests he has been not out in 3 of 8.
In ODI's he has been not out in 3 of 6.
In T20's he has been not out a remarkable 5 of the 6 times he has been at bat.

Quite frankly on current form he should be batting at 3. But for the slightly tougher English conditions - I think we'll slot this lucky guy in at 7.

not true, has 2 tons batting at no.3 for Dandenong! :D

Is James Pattinson the luckiest cricketer in the world?

Going to go a little different

Marsh
Warner
Hughes
Watson
Clarke
D Hussey
Wade
Siddle
Starc
Lyon
Bird

Could always drop Lyon and go in with Hussey Clarke and warner as your spinners and just hope they do ok thats means you could bring in another batter Doolan for example

Exactly.

Lyon is no more likely than Warner, Clarke or D.Hussey to take a wicket or tie down an end.

Do you understand statistics? Sample size? Look, if he starts making a 50 in every third innings I'll be happy. I'll also be very, very surprised, because nothing he has done indicates than he is any more of an all-rounder than Brett Lee.

Warner Watson Hughes Clarke Marsh Wade Paine Pattinson Siddle Lyon Bird

Khawaja Starc Johnson Beer

Pattinson made another 30odd the other day amongst the carnage at G.

I hope he bought a lottery ticket.

It was at the Adelaide Oval. And "the carnage" were players continuing their terrible form...

Patto and Starc are good tail enders, but are no where near capable of batting at 7 or higher as some on here are suggesting.

After making four in the first innings, coming in at number nine behind Hastings and Sheridan.

Star all-rounder there.

First game back.... they were easing him into it, not to mention both of those guys are considered all-rounders.

So he only makes runs when he is really required, a bit like Keith Miller for example.

No one is suggesting they bat above 7... Only I am suggesting the dropping of Lyon to play 5 quicks with Pattinson, Starc & Johnson batting at 7,8,9. I am on record as saying that is our best/only chance of bringing home the ashes.

The team isn't good enough to win with the traditional test set up. 6 Batsmen, Wade and 4 bowlers will NOT be good enough.

Well in the set up you are proposing, someone will get underbowled. I'm pretty confident with 6 Batsmen, Wade and 4 Bowlers... The attack can certainly get 10 wickets, but I understand what you mean when you say we need more options. Maybe we put Wattos opening ambitions on hold and play him as a pure all rounder at 6? However, Cowan has gone backwards and I can't think of any openers worthy of a call up.

TRADITIONAL

1. Watson (batsman only)
2. Warner
3. Hughes
4. Clarke
5. Cowan/Haddin
6. Khawaja
7. Wade
8. Siddle
9. Pattinson
10. Starc
11. Lyon

STACKED BOWLING LINEUP

1. Warner
2. Hughes
3. Clarke
4. Cowan/Haddin
5. Khawaja
6. Watson (all rounder)
7. Wade
8. Siddle
9. Pattinson
10. Starc
11. Lyon

I don't mind this team either. Plenty of bowling options without sacrificing too many batting spots. Also, I think Khawaja should be the only inexperienced batsmen to come in. We have lost too much experience over this short period so I want Cowan or Hads to get another opportunity...

Because moving Hughes away from where he finally looks settled is a good move, and making a gun #5 into a terrible #3 is really a good idea

Couldn't think of any openers off the to of my head! Also thought Pup at three wouldn't be the worst thing in the world because many teams send their best batsman in then... :p

I can think of one, maybe 2 sides. South Africa, possibly Sri Lanka, but it's debatable whether Jaya or Sanga is the better player. Cook opens for England, Clarke at 5 for Australia, Chanderpaul at 4 for WI, Brownlie at 4 for NZ, Kohli for India and I have no clue about Pakistan, I know nothing about them. My point is you play batsman where they're suited to playing. Ian Bell was horrible in 06/07 at 3 but was arguably their best bat in 10/11 batting at 5 when they toured here

I have played plenty of cricket in my time and I honestly don't see too much difference between 3 to say 6. Apart from opening which is completely different, I don't think Pup's performances would change if he was promoted/demoted

Honestly?

Arjen, get a clue.

Keith Miller batted #5 for most of his career, and came in at #3 and #4 on over 30 occassions.

Comparing Pattinson to Miller is absolutely deluded.

You don't see much difference? From playing at your local club I assume? Test Cricket is a different kettle of fish mate. Your top 3 have to be equipped to face fast bowling and swing bowling. They're the blokes that protect the rest of the side from that because they're not as equipped. 4 to 7 are the blokes who you want to know how to play spinners.

Clarke will never be a top 3 batsman, he's too vulnerable to the new ball early in his innings

Then again, if your top 3 are good enough, 4-7 could face the 2nd new ball. I understand that players prefer certain positions, but technically, they should all be able to cope against all forms of bowling.

Top 3 need to be able to face the new ball straight away. Facing the second new ball once you've been in a while is much easier.

Alright relax.............. Again just saying that I couldn't think of a worthy opener to play alongside Warner IF we persist on playing Watto as an all rounder... Which in turn prompted me to reinstate Hughes as an opener which he has had 'some' success at and Pup at first drop

Re: what qualities a number three should have... They need to STAY AROUND. I have more confidence in Clarke than any other Australian player in the land to protect 4-7...
