Not really.

My point is that most Adelaide supporters on your board wanted Elijah Hollands, thought he'd be the next Dustin Martin, and thought it was crazy that Adelaide would take a ruckman at pick 1 over a potential generational talent.

There were even some posts saying that even if TT turns out to be like Wayne Carey, you're still gonna go with Dustin Martin type-player because that's the kind of player that you need in the modern game, as opposed to Carey which would struggle.

From your perspective Mr MysteryGuest, if we check your post history, you took umbrage that Logan McDonald was getting compared to Tom Lynch.

Anyway I'm glad that ALL Adelaide supporters are finally happy with Riley now, you weren't very excited when I announced two weeks prior to the draft on your board, that you were going to draft him. You guys were still posting highlights of Hollands.

How do you think he's going at Carlton at the moment?

huh?

There's plenty of Hawthorn posters who were horrified when you guys drafted Waston.
I'm not sure that has anything to do with how good a small.forward he is does it?

I wouldn't say there was plenty but there was certainly a few that were very annoyed with Wiz. But the general consensus were very happy, particularly as he had trained at the club for two years prior to the draft. So we already knew what we were going to get.

By the way, Adelaide wasn't the only club that we're into Hollands, Hawthorn supporters were very into him too. I think there were a lot of supporters on our board that thought it was funny that you guys drafted a sub-200cm ruckman with pick 1.

I think I tried to tell them Thilthorpe was going to be an excellent pick, thought he would be a generational talent. As per usual, all these so called experts but most of them clueless.

I ventured on your board and told you weeks prior to draft that you'd be drafting Riley. It was like a pin dropped. Silence. You guys are quite loud right now though! 👍

No, I was very much in the Thilthorpe camp for our pick.

Our board was split though in their preferences.

Despite your best efforts, this thread isn't about you, champ.

Nah, I was on the boards when he was drafted and I would say it was evenly split. There were alot like me that wanted Thilthorpe, some others that wanted Hollands and some others that wanted McDonald.
I really liked Thilthorpe. I spoke to Matt Rendell (RIP) and he could not stop talking about how he thought Thilthorpe was going to be such a dominat forward. He said the best young forward he had seen in a long time. I respected Matt's opinion, so I was happy to back him in.

The only reason there was Crows supporters who wanted Hollands was because we were screaming out for a quality mid. On top of that Hollands was a major Crows fan and really wanted to come here.

And as for McDonald, what he did in the WAFL as a Jr was unprecedented.
If you go back and look at what Cal put up from a number of club recuiters they were also a mixed bag. Some even had DGB as number 1 in that year. It was the COVID draft, and the Crows did the best out of anyone in hindsight. They got Thilthorpe, Pedler and Cook. Pedler has shown he has what it takes at AFL level, and is doing really well in the seconds but ANB took his place, and injuries have cost him. There are a number of clubs looking at trying to get him.
It also has to be said that during Thilthorpes draft year he had alot of groin issues, and was played in the ruck alot, so there was questions about if he would be a ruck or forward, and some people didn't want to use the first pick on a ruck.
Apparently the Crows always had Thilthorpe as the number one player in that draft, and only bidded on JUH to make WB pay up for him, as they knew 100% they would match. If there was any doubt about if they were going to match, they would had taken Thilthorpe at one.

2023 Draft

Jed Walter

4.0 kicks, 3.4 handballs, 2.1 marks (0.4 contested, 0.7 on lead, 1.0 inside 50), 1.4 tackles (1.0 inside 50), 1.4 goals, 0.1 assists, 3.4 score involvements

Nate Caddy

8.4 kicks, 3.5 handballs, 4.0 marks (1.1 contested, 1.4 inside 50, 0.9 on lead), 1.4 tackles (0.5 inside 50), 1.4 goals, 0.1 assists, 4.3 score involvements

Logan Morris

5.3 kicks, 3.3 handballs, 2.9 marks (0.9 contested, 1.4 inside 50, 0.6 on lead), 2.0 tackles (0.8 inside 50), 1.6 goals 0.4 assists, 3.9 score involvements

Calsher Dear (2024 numbers)

3.9 kicks, 3.1 handballs, 2.7 marks (1.0 contested, 1.6 inside 50, 0.5 on lead), 2.5 tackles (0.9 inside 50), 1.5 goals, 0.2 assists, 3.6 score involvements

My rankings

Caddy is the clear standout of the group in my opinion. His numbers are the best, I think he is the best athlete of the group, and he is really well rounded in terms of his attributes.

I think the other three are fairly even at this stage. Dear is probably the most skilled, but Morris and Walter are much stronger and more powerful from what I have seen.

2022 Draft

Aaron Cadman

6.0 kicks, 2.9 handballs, 3.7 marks (0.8 contested, 1.6 inside 50, 1.2 on lead), 1.7 tackles (1.2 inside 50), 1.1 goals, 0.4 assists, 4.4 score involvements

My rankings

Cadman is the only notable name out of this group. Is tracking okay but I personally would have liked to see more out of him to this point to rate him up with Caddy. I’m not sure whether Hogan being such a target is holding him back or not.

2021 Draft

Sam Darcy

9.7 kicks, 4.3 handballs, 6.8 marks (3.3 contested, 3.0 inside 50, 1.0 on lead), 1.2 tackles (0.7 inside 50), 2.3 goals, 0.7 assists, 8.3 score involvements

Jye Amiss

4.8 kicks, 2.8 handballs, 3.3 marks (0.4 contested, 1.4 inside 50, 0.8 on lead), 1.2 tackles (0.8 inside 50), 1.4 goals, 0.3 assists, 3.7 score involvements

Jacob Van Rooyen

3.0 kicks, 5.0 handballs, 1.3 marks (0.3 contested, 0.5 inside 50, 0.3 on lead), 2.8 tackles (0.8 inside 50), 0.7 goals, 0.3 assists, 2.7 score involvements

My rankings

Darcy is the obvious standout. I would have him over Caddy as I genuinely don’t know how you stop him from marking the footy.

Amiss and Van Rooyen are a bit disappointing at the moment in my opinion. There’s still plenty of time for them though.

2020 Draft

Jamarra Ugle-Hagan (2024 Numbers)

8.5 kicks, 2.9 handballs, 4.4 marks (1.7 contested, 2.6 inside 50, 1.0 on lead), 1.5 tackles (0.5 inside 50), 2.0 goals, 0.3 assists, 5.8 score involvements

Riley Thilthorpe

8.4 kicks, 5.0 handballs, 5.3 marks (1.8 contested, 3.0 inside 50, 1.6 inside 50), 1.8 tackles (0.9 inside 50), 2.6 goals, 1.2 assists, 6.8 score involvements

Logan McDonald (2024 Numbers)

7.5 kicks, 2.9 handballs, 4.9 marks (0.8 contested, 1.7 inside 50, 1.0 on lead), 1.2 tackles (0.3 inside 50), 1.4 goals, 0.5 assists, 5.0 score involvements

Shannon Neale

4.3 kicks, 2.2 handballs, 3.6 marks (1.7 contested, 1.8 inside 50, 0.6 on lead), 2.7 tackles (1.3 inside 50), 0.8 goals, 0.7 assists, 4.1 score involvements

Josh Treacy

7.7 kicks, 3.3 handballs, 5.7 marks (1.7 contested, 2.7 inside 50, 2.2 on lead), 1.6 tackles (1.0 inside 50), 2.4 goals, 0.4 assists, 6.2 score involvements

Thilthorpe is the standout of this group. I think Darcy’s marking puts him slightly ahead, however, Thilthorpe is a better player at ground level and has the added ability of being a high level ruck when used there.

Treacy is only slightly behind Thilthorpe, he’s one of my favourite players to watch but I think Thilthorpe’s agility and skills below his knees puts him ahead.

JUH and McDonald obviously have big asterisks against them at the moment. If he gets his mind right I think JUH is every bit as good as Darcy, Caddy and Thilthorpe but it’s a big if. I feel McDonald has been judged harshly to this point and I’m not sure why. I still think there is a lot of potential there.

Neale is a solid role player but nothing more I think. Only really included him as he’s playing regular best 22 footy for a contender.

2019 Draft

Mitch Georgiades

8.9 kicks, 3.6 handballs, 5.8 marks (1.6 contested, 3.4 inside 50, 1.9 on lead), 1.3 tackles (0.8 inside 50), 2.2 goals, 0.4 assists, 6.6 score involvements

My Rankings

Georgiades has been held back by injury but I think we’re seeing what he’s capable of now. He probably just needs to sort out his goal kicking to join Darcy and Thilthorpe.

Overall Ranking

Hard to go past Darcy and Thilthorp but Josh Treacy is right up there.

Reckon this guy is underrated big time over east. If he got some semblance of silver service from a midfield that just doesn't get it to him quickly enough, he could tear the competition apart

Ripping mark, great kick and as aggressive as they come. Would put him as captain over Pearce every day of the week also.

It’s always tricky judging a second year player against fourth/fifth year players. However to my observation he is strong for his relatively slight frame, moves well, has a great leap and good hands. Has all the tools to be an elite key forward I think and his second year output is greater than that of Thilthorpe and Treacy (obviously Darcy had limited AFL exposure at the same point). He doesn’t have the height of Thilthorpe or Darcy or the natural power of Treacy which is probably the only limiting factor I would say.

When comparing Thilthorpe to Darcy I think Thilthorpe is the stronger contested mark, but Darcy has that added reach that just means that no defender can compete in the air with him. His reach is what puts him as the hardest to stop marking.
I think that Darcy is the harder to match up out of the two for a defender, as there isn't any defenders anywhere near his height, but there are some that can get close enough to Thilthorpe.

  1. Sam Darcy
  2. Riley Thilthorpe
  3. Nate Caddy
  4. Josh Treacy
  5. Mitch Georgiades
  6. Jamarra Ugle-Hagan*
  7. Calsher Dear
  8. Jed Walter
  9. Logan Morris
  10. Logan McDonald
  11. Aaron Cadman
  12. Jye Amiss
  13. Jacob Van Rooyen
  14. Shannon Neale
I wish I could make an arguement for Neale but he really isn't there yet, his good moments are so few and far between it's difficult to say he will become even a decent KPF
