Charles Alfred George Sutton is a name synonymous with the Footscray Football Club and widely regarded as the third best player in the clubs history behind Whitten and Gowers.
Sutton was renown to 'shop early' and re arrange the nose and jaws of the oppositions best player - generally within the first five minutes of important fixtures. It was a fine tactic, but one in the placid 'flopping' society that we sadly live in has dissipated from our once great game. Sutton was our last successful Captain/Coach. Sutton, although short in stature had massive biceps (pictured below about to lift the 54 cup) that were trained through lifting up the unconscious corpses post his 10 minute rampages.
With the Bulldogs list currently in dire straights through bad luck, negligence and Jesus generally being a a-hole, we find ourselves in the unprecedented position of only having 21 players to choose from this week against the Demons (including Biggs FMD). So what the fig do we do?
This week, in the name of Sutton, we resurrect the role of Captain/Coach and play Luke Beveridge from the bench in a long flannel gown. Beveridge has slowed since his halcyon days of burning Daniel Chick (pictured above after stealing his stash) but still has massive arms and as anyone at the McKinnon Hotel, East Bentleigh can tell you, can break a nose before one has time to put a pot on a bar.
This week we cannot win, we will be discombobulated on the scoreboard, mostly because of Jesus (can someone please tell him we are playing the Demon's, as in Satan, he doesn't listen to Brisdog no more). But that does not mean Luke Beveridge cannot run from the bench and discombobulate the faces of Oliver, Viney and Lewis - in that order.
I don't expect to see Damien Barrett at the presser post game either.
