Round 1 saw Carlton debut it's newest No.1 pick, Jacob Weitering, Weities was composed down back taking 7 marks and collecting 17 disposals. Entrenched best 22 stars in Patrick Cripps and Sam Docherty polled coaches votes in the loss, Cripps had 27 disposals, laid 3 tackles and scored a goal whilst Sam Docherty found the pill 29 times, took 6 marks and laid two tackles. Jed Lamb (13 disposals) kicked a goal on his debut in navy blue, Sam Kerridge impressed with 24 disposals, whilst Blaine Boekhurst (15 disposals) and Nick Graham (23 disposals) found their feet, Dylan Buckley struggled collecting only 3 disposals.

Round 2 continued to bring excitement to the Carlton fans with the debut of No.12 Pick Charlie Curnow. The younger brother of Ed managed to impress in his first hit out showing flair and class as he collected 11 disposals and kicked a goal. Fellow 2016 draftee Jacob Weitering played a large role in attempting to stop the Sydney forwards finding 15 possessions and taking 6 marks. Sam Kerridge continued to show his worth picking up 22 disposals and scoring 2 goals. Patrick Cripps and Sam Docherty played solid roles in the sides loss, picking up 18 and 21 disposals respectively. Patrick Cripps' 10 tackles were a phenomenal effort against the big bodied Sydney midfield. Blaine Boekhurst and Jed Lamb struggled to get into the game with 10 and 11 disposals respectively, Boekhurst managed to put one through the big sticks and take 6 marks running up and down the wing. Nick Graham continues to play an under appreciated role with 21 disposals, 3 marks and 4 tackles.

Jacob Weitering was Carlton's best player on the night, scoring a coaches vote and the nomination for th NAB AFL rising star award. The young blue had 26 disposals, took 9 marks and laid 2 tackles in a composed display showing signs of true leadership and endeavor. Sam Docherty and Patrick Cripps had down games for their standards but showed why they have firmly found their place in the Carlton side picking up 22 and 23 disposals. Patrick Cripps found another avenue to goal as he continues to rest forward, managing his workload and a possible lingering knee injury. Ciaran Byrne returned to the side for his second AFL game and impressed with 20 disposals and 5 marks dashing off half back. Sam Kerridge continues to prove a vital acquisition with another 21 disposals and 3 tackles. Charlie Curnow dazzled the crowd with a one handed grab and scored a goal to make the most of his 10 disposals. Dylan Buckley unfortunately dissapointed again playing a role forward of centre managing only 11 disposals, but did lay two tackles and score a behind. Mark Whiley returned to the side but could only manage 16 disposals, 2 marks and 1 tackle.

In a tough night for the boys, despite effort, it was the youth who shined through a darker result. Sam Kerridge picked up 26 disposals and sent the ball inside fifty 4 times showing his ability to find the ball and progress it forwards. Sam Docherty was one of the best blues on the nigh constantly linking play and making big statements with 10 marks and 25 disposals. Patrick Cripps continued to look hampered by a knee injury and subsequently spent some time forward, kicking 1 goal 2, but he also couldn't avoid the centre circle, working hard, especially in the last half after giving away a few free kicks in the early part of the game, finishing with 23 disposals, 4 marks and a huge 8 tackles Cripps showed even not fully fit he's a weapon to contain. Liam Sumner showed something on debut, kicking 2 goals, but playing a deep forward role could only find 7 touches. Lachie Plowman debuted and showed the blues a defenaive partnership to be proud of with Weitering. Plowman carried well off half back and affected the contest, even collecting 2 marks in his 10 disposals. Jacob Weitering had a quieter game from a statistical standpoint, but still managed 15 disposals, 5 marks and whilst unluckily giving away a couple of free kicks did a big job on the Bulldogs defenders looking classy and polished. Charlie Curnow had one of his most prolific nights picking up 15 disposals and showing flashes of brilliance such as swinging out of a tackle and delivering the ball long, he couldn't find the goals but picked up 15 disposals.Dylan Buckley struggled again, despite kicking a goal after a Lamb handpassed he also dropped marks and seemed to struggle on the first touch, he had 12 disposals and 2 inside 50's. Nick Graham had his worst game for the season, unable to work his way into the game he had 12 touches but laid 4 tackles. Jed Lamb did a lot of good things and looked smooth and accurate with the ball in hand, taking 6 marks, kicking a goal and having 13 touches. Ciaran Byrne continued to find his feet at AFL level, getting caught by some free kicks but had some dash off half back with 15 touches, 4 marks and an inside 50.

Da dada dada, The Navy Blues picked up their first win for the season! Whilst the experience of Murphy, Gibbs and Thomas were pivotal, key efforts by the youth were essential to the teams first win. Ciaran Byrne was phenomenal across half back, intercepting marks and breaking the lines with his run and carry the Irish man looked a part of our defensive future ith 19 disposals, 5 marks (4 contested) and 2 inside 50's. Patrick Cripps continues to truck along, picking up a lazy 29 disposals, 20 contested possession and 5 tackles. Crippa showed his mercurial talents a couple of times by breaking tackles and finding a player with a look away handpass but also made 3 critical errors and missed a shot on goal, his 9 clearances and 3 inside 50's more than made up for this however. Sam Kerridge was amongst the best with 28 disposals, 5 marks, 5 tackles, 4 clearances and 3 inside 50's in a complete performance bar the presence of 4 critical errors. Sam Docherty had a quiet game but still managed 4 makrs, by his standards with only 15 disposals, and most importantly 5 spoils spending more time deeper in defence. Charlie Curnow continues to improve with 11 disposals, 3 marks and a critical goal in the second quarter. Jacob Weitering only managed 11 disposals but had 6 huge spoils and only made one critical error. Liam Sumner remained quiet on a forward flank with 10 disposals and made 4 critical errors to cloud what was otherwise an improvement on last weeks game. Jed Lamb played a positive role as deep full forward, and despite being robbed of a few free kicks his way still took 3 marks, had two inside 50's and kicked a goal. Lachie Plowman was resolute in defence, despite having only 9 possession he blanketed Pavlich, Mayne and Tabener, collecting 6 spoils and making no critical errors. Dylan Buckley brought speed and chase all day, but only managed 7 disposals and a solitary point.

This is exactly what we didn't want for our rebuild. Patrick Cripps to miss an important game against Essendon, where he could have really torn the game apart, ad Jacob Weitering to sublax his shoulder in the second quarter. Buckley copping an injury and Charlie Curnow pulling up sick didn't help either, but the Blues got the game which was the main thing. Ciaran Byrne was one of the Blues best with 18 disposals at 78% efficiency and importantly 5 marks, 2 rebound 50's and one inside fifty, his run was immense and showed extreme composure for a third gamer. Nick Graham came back into the side and filled the void of Patrick Cripps, working hard through the middle and picking up 22 disposals, including 10 contested and 2 clearances but mostly filled the Cripps void with his 8 tackles. Sam Kerridge exploded in the first half but his performance tapered off finishing with 19 disposals, and 10 marks spreading from the contest. Sam Docherty had a quiet game, but still picked up 22 disposals went at 87% efficiency and had 4 1%ers. Jed Lamb put in a constant effort, kicked a brilliant goal when we needed it and had 13 disposals in a decent performance. Liam Sumner kicked a ripper for the sealer but only had 9 disposals at 78% efficiency. Lachie Plowman was stoic down back with 12 disposals, 3 marks, and a massive 10 1%ers. Jacob Weitering was the sad story of the night, looking his calm and composed self to 8 disposals and two marks before popping his shoulder out. Hopefully he will be back soon because we need him in this side.

An injury to Weitering, and our first choice rookies being either injured or coming back from injury meant Carlton fielded their most experienced side of the year, with only 7 'youth' players pulling on the jumper. But we got a win against the old foe, made it three in a row and surpassed all media's pre-season expectations by round 7!
Carlton put in an amazing effort across the board, and along with Gibbs, Simpson and Curnow who had some monumental efforts it was the youth who lifted the team as well. Sam Docherty continues to grow across half back, he collected 24 disposals, had 8 marks, 4 Rebound 50's, 5 tackles and 2 inside 50's he was everywhere on the day, counter attacking but also spoiling deep and clearing up in the back half. Patrick Cripps returned from injury and made an immediate impact, looking Kouta like with his duking and running bounces through the middle (he had 4 bounces on the day) Crippa collected 29 disposals, a mere 19 contested went at 76% efficienty, laid 6 tackles and had 9 monumental clearances, he pulled out the party tricks again, setting up Gibbs for a goal with a left handed handpass out of congestion and showed us what we missed of him last week. Jed Lamb had one of his best game sin Blue, playing a bit more through the midfield he picked up 19 disposals, socred a goal and had 4 inside 50's. Sam Kerridge, had a mixed game, he collected 24 disposals at 83% efficiency and had 3 clearances and 5 tackles, but also managed 4 clangers, he found the scoreboard again with a goal and overall had another good game. Ciaran Byrne continues to perform with 14 disposals, but had efficiency concerns going at only 64%, however he made no clangers, had 4 inside 50's and 2 rebound 50's so overall a good performance from the Irishmen. Lachie Plowman did a silly thing or two, trying to take on Fasolo on the wing and getting caught, leading to one of his 3 clangers, but he had 8 disposals at 75% efficiency and found 3 1%ers I found him serviceable down back but he clearly missed the presence of his young partner in crime Jacob Weitering. Liam Sumner had a solid game finding 11 disposals at a disappointing 54% eff but managed to kick a goal have two i50's and lay two tackles.

This weekend: Casey Scorpions v Northern Blues
There weren't many positives for the Blues in their 107-point loss to Casey, with two VFL-listed players taken to hospital after being involved in separate collisions.Omitted midfielder Nick Graham played a lone hand for his side, gathering 32 disposals, laying 14 tackles and taking nine marks. Former Sydney Swans defender Matthew Dick, who joined the Blues as a delisted free agent at the end of 2014, also held his own with 27 touches.In his comeback from a calf strain, Dylan Buckley appeared to be reported in the first half.

In an amazing come from behind victory that took Carlton to four wins in a row for the first time since 2011 it was the amazing performances in the face of adversity that shone brightest.
Sam Docherty announced himself onto the stage of elite half backs with a truly superb effort. Picking up 4 coaches votes Doch had 33 disposals, at 84% efficiency, 13 marks, 6 1%ers and 7 rebound 50's in a display to make Blues fans happy about the future. Patrick Cripps picked up & coaches votes and fought through injury to amass 30 disposals, 16 contested, took 5 marks, had two goal assists, had 8 clearances and 7 tackles. This boy is a bull, a phenom and unstoppable. Lachie Plowman made the AFL world take notice with his courage, despite being crushed early he continued to go back with the ball hard, even taking a mark in the dying seconds to secure Carltn's victory going back with the flight. He had 17 disposals at 82% efficiency took 9 marks and had 5 1%ers. Jed LAmb continues to be dynamic up forward, kicking 2 goals from 13 disposals, his 69% disposal efficiency the only blight on his game, if you can call it one. Liam Sumner made an impact, running down Amon to get the crucial tackle and goal to put us 4 points down. He had 11 disposals and four tackles to go along with his goal. Ciaran Byrne continues to impress, having a quieter game but doing an effective defensivejob on Chad Wingard, Ciaran had 9 disposals, 3 marks and 2 clangers but took the game on with his run and carry.

This weekend: Williamstown v Northern Blues
After managing only two goals for the match against Casey last Sunday, the Blues kicked just three goals this week in their 143-point humiliation to Williamstown.
Talented midfielder Blaine Boekhorst (13 touches) kicked one of the Blues' three majors for the afternoon.

In an unfortunate end to Carlton's 4-peat winning streak, the Blues came up against top of the table North Melbourne and got thoroughly beaten in a four quarter performance. However the Blues were never embarrassed and can hold their heads high despite the big loss.
Sam Docherty worked tirelessly in defence to pick up another 29 disposals, including 8 marks and 15 kicks at a total of 79.2% efficiency, his 5 rebound 50's were essential for Carlton's drive off half back. Patrick Cripps is a faultless player, he had 28 disposals, with 14 contested possessions and 8 clearances, become the fastest player to amass 200 clearances in just his 31st game of AFL football. He also had a lazy 6 tackles. Sam Kerridge received a mixed response from the Blues fans, drawing unnecessary criticism for a few less than perfect attacks on the ball, in spite of this he had 29 possessions at 72%, 12 contested disposals, 4 marks, 5 clearances, 4 tackles and 5 inside 50's, not a bad performance if you ask me. Ciaran Byrne continues to wow supporters with his development, picking up a handful of intercept marks across the back flank he ended with 7 marks, 2 contested and 18 disposals at a meager 92% efficiency. Lachie Plowman loved having Jacob Weitering back in the side and he went to work picking off incoming passes, taking 6 marks witha couple being key intercept marks, he had 15 disposals and 6 1%ers in a well rounded performance. Speaking of Jacob Weitering the future gun had to warm himself back into the game, he only collected 11 disposals and made 4 clangers in his comeback game but took 6 marks and went at 81% efficiency. Liam Sumner continues to put amazing pressure int he forward half running down players unaware that the terrier is closing in on them. Unfortunately he couldn't capitalise on his effort and kicked two behinds, but had 9 disposals overall, unfortunately his efficiency rate was 38% a very disappointing effort from an otherwise talented player, his 4 inside 50's and 3 tackles were big positives in his effort. Jed Lamb had a quieter game, only collecting 6 disposals and kicking a behind. Daniel Gorringe debuted for the blues and had an awful game hit out wise, collecting only 7 against Todd Goldstein, but did some positive things around the ground collecting 13 disposals, and having 4 1%ers.

This weekend: Northern Blues v Coburg - Sunday May 22, 2pm, Preston City Oval
Third-generation Blue Jack Silvagni showed more signs of promise with three goals in the 11-point win over Coburg. Kristian Jaksch joined in the fun with four himself, to go with 17 disposals.Midfielder Nick Graham was heavily influential with Graham collecting 32 disposals also booted three goals.

Who would have thought we'd be 5-5 by this stage of the season after just defeating the media's darlings and "premiership favourites" Geelong. Well it happened, and with the captain going down early in the first term, it was up to some of our younger leaders to stand up.
If the world is just, Sam Docherty will be an All-Australian half back this season. He had another stellar week with 30 disposals at 80% efficiency, 8 marks, 2 contest, 6 rebound 50's 6 inside 50's and 4 1%ers. Patrick Cripps found another 30 disposals with 15 contested, but unfortunately had 7 clangers in a very physical battle with the Geelong pair of Dangerfield and Selwood, he had 3 clearances and 7 tackles in an otherwise inspiring performance, his one mark of the night sealed the game taking a contested mark over Patrick Dangerfield to lock the ball in our forward fifty and win us the game. Lachie Plowman has firmly entrenched himself in the best 22, and I couldn't imagine a back six without him, he had 16 disposals at 81% efficiency, had 6 marks, four Rebound 50's and 3 1%ers, he saved a goal with an excellent tackle catching the Geelong forward holding the ball and was overall resolute in our defensive system. With Liam Sumner down, Jed Lamb had a larger role to play and manfully stepped up to the task collecting 15 disposals, taking 5 marks having 6 inside 50's and kicking a goal. Jacob Weitering had an injury scare early, and got found out by the bigger Geelong forwards on a couple of occassions in the first term but grew into his performance and finished with 17 disposals, 8 marks, 5 rebound 50's and 2 1%ers. He looked clean with ball in hand and confidently took marks in the back half. Daniel Gorringe has done nothing to hurt his chances so far, his 14 disposal, 3 clearane and 6 1%ers told the tale of a fairly good game, his 2 goals were a lovely added bonus on top of that. Sam Kerridge had his second quiet game fo the season, only being able to find the ball 14 times, he did however go at 92% efficiency and had 7 tackles, so even in a quiet one the former Adelaide boy more than played his part. Liam Sumner was cruelly robbed of a chance to perform as he could only manage a solitary hand ball before going down with an ankle injury, thankfully at this stage it doesn't appear to be a reinjury of that awful navicular foot injury, so we can only hope he'll be back soon. Ciaran Byrne was a late out for this game and would have loved to run out in another win.

Did somebody drop the F-Bomb? Finals are a distinct possibility. What isn't a possibility, but a certainty, is our youth absolutely killing it.
Did anybody realise we drafted the best kid int he country this year? Because if you missed the memo Jacob Weitering made you pay attention. The boy has 6 intercept marks half way through the third on his was to amassing 13 marks for the game including 3 ripper contested marks in defence. To add to that he had 24 disposals at 79% efficiency and 4 1%ers in a complete performance from the rookie. Sam Kerridge had his biggest game for the club getting a nod from the coaches with 4 votes due to his 30 disposals, 73% efficiency, 16 mark performance. He got off the chain and was an essential link through the midfield, he also nabbed a goal for his efforts. Patrick Cripps continues to dominate every team he faces, the had another 16 contested possession out of his total of 26, had 4 marks, 6 clearances and kicked an amazing goal. He was credited with 10 clangers, but it's a strange stat and im guessing it must include the 5 free kicks against which were from my recollection all wrongly given. Sam Docherty drifted out of the game at times but imposed his will at other key moments, he had 20 disposals and took 8 marks on his way to 6 rebound 50's and 2 inside 50's. Gee Gorringe looked like a player, Daniel had 18 disposals including 7 marks, 3 of which were big contested grabs, he kicked 1.1 but does things every week he's been given a chance that make you think... maybe. Nick Graham came back into the side and didn't exactly find his feet, he had 16 disposals at 81% efficiency but also had 4 clangers. He had 7 tackles however and cannot be faulted for his effort as always. Jed Lamb had a quieter game, with 13 disposals, 4 marks and 4 1%ers. But out of that limited productivity managed to kick 3 GOALS. Ciaran Byrne loved being back in the side and his 18 disposals, 4 marks, 2 rebound 50's and his exhilarating dash through the middle made Carlton fans happy to see him back in the side. Lachie Plowman didn't get the accolades of his young partner Weitering but he found 16 disposals and 3 marks while going at an impressive 87% efficiency.

You have to understand that its possible/probable that most of Simmo, Rowe, Jammo, and maybe Murphy, Gibbs and Tuohy may be retired by the end of 2018/start of 2019 season.

I'm more inclined to think that this rebuild will take 5 years (minimum) and that's if we nail at least 3 of our next 5 draft/trade periods.

You also have to factor in injuries and some players take longer to develop than others..

We're on the right track, but generally think its going to take longer then most think.

If we assume that finals are the end goal of this rebuild, how many games do we think we need to win each year to eventually make the finals at the end of the 2018 season, and how much of our youth (and that youths alumni, i.e a 24 year old Docherty at the end of 2018 for example) do we want to see in the side to signal a realistic push from a young core at AFL success.

Hopefully by Round 23 2018, only Gibbs, Muphy, Touhy and possibly Casboult, Ed Curnow, Kreuzer or Thomas will remain as experienced senior players, possible additions of Free Agents might come into the picture by 2018 but hopefully we will be driven by a large cohort of youth, the likes of Cripps, Docherty, Weitering, Curnow, McKay and many more, including those still to come.

We've seen in the past the speed at which clubs ascend the ladder, look to Port Adelaide (Hinkley) Western Bulldogs (Beveredge) Hawthorn (2008) West Coast (Simpson) to see how quickly teams climb the ladder. There is a point, where the rebuild either works or it doesnt work, the period to actually rebuild, I believe is 3 years. All those sides, and plenty of others have a first year of a very low ladder position, follwoed by a year just outside the 8 and then catapult into the 8. Any "rebuild" that takes longer than 3 years is a failed or stalled rebuild that is just waiting for the inevitable 3 year rebuild that actually works.

We just have to hope, and do our best as a club, to make this rebuild work.

Also I am positive, Gibbs, Murphy and Kreuzer will still be playing football in 2018 (be it at Carlton or elsewhere) they're all under 28 and unlike a lot of people try to push, footballers dont fall over and die at 30.

Great post, will be good to keep track of how our youth is developing. We need to get into the position where our senior guys are fighting for a spot in the best 22 with the youth. For too many years its been the same senior players and when the youth comes in, its delisted straight away, which ultimately comes down to the recruiting staff. I think we have put down a solid foundation for this club to build on and get back to being the benchmark of the comp.

To play devil's advocate, St Kilda started a full rebuild around 2011-ish, and they still look a fair way off finals contention.

Mind you, I think they have drafted and traded appallingly in that time (Billings and Josh Bruce being the only future A Graders they have nailed in that time.

The Dogs had 3-4 solid gold drafts in a row (after Rocket Eade left) by comparison.

I guess we can't just assume/take for granted that our rebuild will be successful, still a lot of hard work and player research required but year one of SOS' rebuild has gone off with a flyer, couldn't be happier

As far as I'm concerned, the rebuild/reset started as soon as we started delisting players last year. We have started well by delisting a bunch of deadwood and having a couple of reluctant retirements. And then we went to the trade table and cleaned up. We got in a bunch of top 20 picks and traded in a couple of talented youngsters from GWS and a bunch of workers.

Then we took the rebuild show to the draft and as far as I'm concerned, we cleaned up. We addressed our tall needs in a single draft as far as I'm concerned, we got the best tall defender and nailed a tall forward.then we got a couple of good medium utility players in Curnow and Silvagni... and if they both grow a couple of cms more they turn into tall forwards.

We also addressed some of our lack of outside run in picking up Cuningham.

And in the rookie draft we nailed the steal of the draft, IMO, in Glass-McCasker. I rated him quite highly and I thought he would be gone by the end of the third round. But wow... for him to slide to the rookie draft was a massive bonus for us. He just needs to build some upper body strength and he will be a direct replacement for Jamison.

The biggest thing about the start to the rebuild is how much the club has engaged the membership through the constant announcements, videos, picture galleries and just generally keeping us up to date. Never has the club been so open and forthcoming with information... even our injury reports are accurate.

While there is going to be a lot of short term pain as Bolton leads the club through the next 2 years of development and building a base for future success, The signs are there that once the development and learning is done, the future is going to be bright.
