MVP BF Lions Player of the Year 2012 - Congratulations Jack Redden!

No wonder we all thought Redden was going to win the B&F...

Whilst not denigrating JoeelyPat in any way - well done, but is the club's criteria right? JoellyPat was wonderful. Did his job in an exemplary manner. Every successful team needs such a player. But Jack was our best player this year. The award is for Best & Fairest not most effective. This post is about the club, not the player.

I think that if we aren't going to mark players on how well they perform their team role and instead on who gets the most disposals or what ever we might as well just scrap the whole night and award the medal to who ever polls the most brownlow votes.

Congratulations to Jack Redden :thumbsu: he had a great year.

Magnificent effort by Zorko too to come in 4th. Is that the best ever result for a first year player?

I was hoping Huddo would make top ten but see he's just missed out! He was enormous for us this year.

Jack was our best player in the second half of the year. Unfortunately they don't give half yearly awards.

The same thing crossed my mind. As deserved as Patfull was, he's not the sort of player who wins B&Fs at most clubs. He does his job very well and very effectively but he's not a star - you could argue that it would be like Craig McRae winning the B&F during the premiership years. Sure, excellent player of his position and a vital cog in the side - but "best" player? Probably not.

But I had the following thoughts:

- Would I have the same issue if Patfull had come second? Probably not - plenty of people had him as a top 3 prospect.

- Do I equally think that Rich didn't deserve to finish second or that the rest of the top 5 was undeserved? Nope - I reckon they got it about right.

So the system can't be too flawed.

I wonder if we have pre-conceived notions of what a B&F winner should be and Patfull didn't fit that, hence the questioning of the system?

The B&F has jack shit to do with being a star, it's about being consistantly good throughout the year. Joel was very good all year, whereas Jack had his ups and downs.

There is no better recipient for the 2012 Merrett-Murray Medal than Joel Patfull, and I don't care how biased you all think I am.

I'm with you on this one Kezz.

The program for the evening which everyone in attendance received had a section on the voting system, that was as follows:

"The Merrett-Murray Medal - awarded to the Brisbane Lions' best and fairest player - is the Club's highest individual honour.

The Club Champion voting system rewards consistency, excellence, ability and team contributions, and is appropriately decided upon by those people who know the players' assigned roles best - the coaches.

The Lions' Match Committee convened every Monday morning throughout the season and gave each player's performance a rating out of five - including half votes.

The maximum five votes are incredibly rare - having been awarded just six times since the current voting format was introduced - while players who are deemed to have made little or no impact on a game can receive zero votes.

The Match Committee do not rely on stats sheets, goal lists or popular opinion to make an assessment. Rather, they evaluate a player's performance based on the roles they have been assigned.

Reading that, there's no doubt that Joel was the deserving winner. And anyone who argues that it should merely rely upon the same factors as the Brownlow doesn't understand the club champion aspect of it. It's not the player who looked the best all year, but instead the one who gave everything and didn't let the team down.

I reckon next year will be down to one of the R's and Zorko. For this year, though, I'm more than happy for Joel to come away with the award, as his performance this season summed up everything that makes me proud about being part of this club.

I've got mixed feelings .

On one hand, I really, honestly, truly believed that Redden was our best, most consistent and hard-working contributor.

On the other, I reckon it's bloody fantastic that an "unfashionable" yet totally team oriented defender has won a B&F in what have (for quite some time) basically become Midfielder awards.

So good onya Joel
