I suppose it would of been a great idea for south to shell out the coin and let other clubs promote fev playing there early on in the season and make big bucks

I have seen a few photos on social media of Fev, is he planning on playing.. He looks like he is on the Lance Whitnall diet and certainly does not look like he has been putting in hard yards on the track and in match condition. Is he really going to play, or just coach?

Didn't South play hard ball when clearing Notman when he 1st decided to go to Melton? Now the shoe is on the other foot

On iPhone using BigFooty.com mobile app
Melton Sth cleared Matty Notman straight away when he wanted to leave. He was contracted but had a falling out with a previous coach. So we cleared him with hope down the track he might return. Why would we want a bloke as good as noddy was be at yr club if he didn't want to be there. He was cleared and wished all the best. It bloody hurt when he dominated against us but that's footy. He wanted to come back finish playing with his mates and to help coach.
Take this to the bank we will be going to appeals next week but if it doesn't work out he misses a year of footy because he won't go back to Melton. And for someone who gave Melton 4 years of great service I reckon he needs to be respected and granted his wish.
But believe me if any player wants to leave us to go to Melton in the future it will be made very hard. Let's just hope it all works out for Matt who just wants to play footy with his mates.

Not questioning this bloke in this instance but you never here of blokes changing clubs to sides are going to be battlers to "play with their mates"

Always find it completely ridiculous that a club would not clear a player.. Its actually absurd that they actually need to be cleared to change clubs. The only grounds for a player not being cleared is if he has signed a sign on fee and is contracted or for some ressies players if they havent paid there subs and owe the club money.. Outside of that it is a free market and ridiculous that a player can not choose where he wants to play footy each year.

So by your own reasoning, he should not be cleared. He signed a contract. There is no way South will win an appeal over a clearance for a contracted player. Ask Horbury at Redan. As for sign on fees, they are banned & would never even be considered by an appeals tribunal. If clubs are still stupid enough to throw around sign on fees & the player does a runner, tough. The message to players is simple. If you sign a contract to play for a club, don't try to back out of it if a better offer comes along.

Half of this is correct, AFL Vic are pretty cut and dry on their rulings when it comes to contracts.

As for sign on fees, they are not banned, they are "frowned upon".

According to clause 10.3 of AFL Vics salary cap policy they are not allowed. Or banned. Regardless, they are not a valid reason to refuse a clearance. Contracts are.

You're reading the first version, AFL lawyers had the clause removed because it couldn't be enforced.

Ok thanks. Fair to say it would still be under the table stuff anyway. If it was out in the open it would have to be declared in the cap, couldn't see that happening. Seen a few clubs burnt by players not honouring sign ons in the past, I don't know why they persist with it. A famous ex St.Kilda star took sign ons from 3 different clubs then did a runner to WA a few years back.

There are so many ways around the salary cap that its silly to bother.. Fev will no doubt host a sportsman night where he could get 100% of revenue, he pays Brent Thornton & Nick Kommer to speak $10k. So many examples of how clubs will easily get around staying within the salary cap.

All of that is included in the cap which is why their paperwork needs to be in order. For their sake I hope they don't get investigated. That would be a terrible shame.

That situation would be a private business matter so why would it be in the salary cap?

What if he leased the function rooms from the club and held the function independently of the footy club..

If investigated, they would put it under the cap.

AFL Vic will be eager to land a big fish breach early, the actual scope of their powers to include things like this is quite broad.

So you can't run a sportsmens night at your own club cause the afl Vic know they have loop holes and that will make them look silly? Making it hard for blokes to make an income outside of afl if that's the case
