Someone who's 26 years old and in his prime years, missing a year of footy...surely it won't come to that. My guess is melton will clear him AFTER this weeks game. And maybe a small sum to go with it.
I dunno, Redan played hardball with Horbury last year. Sebas did with a young bloke as well.

I dont know the ins and outs of what's going on in any of these situations but it seems the clubs are sticking to their guns

Same thing is happening with Cam Cloke at the moment, signed with Jacana in edfl now wants out to the NFL. Already signed a contract and took big sign on fee at jacana. And believe same thing in Bairnsdale with Cupido.

Having said that, I think Notman has more credibility than those two. good to see a club make an example out of someone trying to break a contract though.

Good on clubs for sticking to their guns. Players need to be held accountable.

I agree. There are going to be a few blokes who are made an example off but it probably needs to happen for players to understand what signing a contract means.

Ridiculous, a club does not own a player.. this is local footy and clubs should create an environment where players want to play for that club not because a piece of paper makes them obligated. Having contracts for more than 1 season are ridiculous at local level, plenty can happen that changes someone circumstances that voids it. Melton just seem to be completely pig headed on this and putting up a fight for no real reason, its clear Nottman will not continue playing at Mcpherson park, he gave good service whilst playing for Melton and is now wanting to leave because of an opportunity to work as assistant coach with some high profile people. All this will do is make it harder for Melton to recruit future players.

Bloke signs a contract committing to that club for a period of time. Club should be able to expect that said player will be there for that period. How can clubs plan for future, attempt stability if contracts are not going to be enforced

I can't agree with this, there's a lot to be said

Yeah I'm with you here Roota.

Country footy is also a long way from the old days. It's very much a business now; not just a matter of playing with mates and getting pissed Thursday - Sunday.

My main point is that there simply should not be contracts for more than 1 season in local footy. If you use this as an example, Melton has known since October than Nottman intended to leave so have had ample time to source a replacement.

More than enough time ,put it down to the fact Murphy and he's footy manager are both germs.

Perhaps, but if he's happy enough to sign for multiple seasons then that's on him. Club are 110% entitled to hold him to his contract and ensure they send the message that next time a player signs a contract, its not just the club that has to hold up their end of the deal.

Yep I agree with your main point, that being the length of contract. 1 year is ample.

An element of greed from players requiring sign ons is a current cultural one and is problematic, as clubs push back requiring multiple years for said 'sign on' fee.

There are many well goverened clubs throughout the state who create an environment where players don't want to leave, and are diligent in relation to sign on up front payments. ie. All the ones who will not touch Cupido with a barge pole after he has been shopping himself around.

Must have held a gun to his head to make him sign. I wonder why he left in the first place. Funny how playing with his mates is all of a sudden a great lure to get him back to Sth. Was he thinking of mateship last year when they were garbage and went winless? Would he be so keen to play with his mates if there wasn't going to be a few ex AFL blokes running around? And he'll be real busy as an assistant coach with Triplett and Fevola there. What will he be doing? Picking up cones? Contracts are legal documents. Don't like them? Don't sign them. Not that hard.

Hey merrigan, I know you aren't a Melton Sth bloke but as an interested poster who doesn't follow anyone specifically in the BFL, this Melton Sth thing has certainly livenened up this forum by about 100%.

Gee I hope Melton Sth win plenty of games after all of Patty Diamond's early boasting!!

If Melton Sth were the Titanic, I see a large iceberg ahead ...

They've certainly breathed some life into things Silver Tongue. I don't blame Sth supporters for talking their club up, let's face it they haven't had a lot to celebrate for a while so the excitement is understandable, and Patty's crowing has at least been entertaining and good banter. What I don't like is the crap regarding Notman's clearance and the notion that Melton should let him out of his contract because he's changed his mind. Bad luck. Suck it up and get on with it.

Perhaps he was promised by Melton that they were an ambitious club wanting to play finals and compete instead of staying around at South who were a basket case, Melton failed to live up to there end of the bargain with poor recruiting and poor culture and again look to be set to be bottom feeders again in 2017.

It is a massive opportunity for him to work as an assistant coach under 2 very experienced operators in Fevola and more importantly Triplett, he can learn and develop. If he has future coaching ambition would be the major pull for the kid.

Again, i can't agree. A longer contracted period allows a bloke to provide a bit more security, monetary wise. The contracted period is simply up to the player on whether he signs or not. If you've been offered a decent amount of cash for a set period you're going to take it for security.

One year contracts will generate even more mercenaries than there is. Longer contracts allow clubs to plan and build teams.

I would agree with you if the contracts were not $___ per game and allowed the player the security should injury or form loss hits, but they dont if a player does a knee and misses 12 months of footy they are not paid, if a player gets dropped to the reserves they are not paid. The club holds all the power in these deals.

Probably a bit harsh with saying poor culture mate. But yes agree with piss poor recruiting Murphy and his footy manager have done past couple years (hopefully they have finally got it right this year).

The result from AFL vic appeals board should be in very soon ??

Yeah, fair enough. I see your point there.

I guess if contracts are longer than one year players need to ensure they're covered for those things, where possible. Country footy has changed a lot recently and these things will take some time before the players become more aware and work out how to swing a contract more in their favour.
