Agree. The only thing Fevola brought to South was a hashtag #lasttofirst, borne out of arrogance as much as false hope. Holidays in Bali, more investment in his career as a media buffoon, inability to train or play with the club he coaches contrasted by his willingness to accept a fist full of cash for one off appearances in other leagues shows his blatant lack of committment to South's efforts to improve. The effect that lack of committment would have on the team, particularly the younger players would be debilitating and drags a poor culture deeper into the hole. I've read a lot of wraps for the blokes working behind the scenes at South and no doubt they are tireless and have their hearts in the right place, but, they are clearly failing the club. To put up with Fevola's indifference, spectator misbehaviour as displayed by the ambo incident last year, a punch up between a junior coach and one of his players are all pointers to a poor culture which won't be fixed overnight. It's no bold prediction to suggest that South are effectively finished in the BFL and it would surprise to see them still in the comp behind 2019 at best.

(Most of the blokes working behind the scenes at South) The workers I referred to, do not have a say in the club any more, they just continue to help out & are the invisible people who get no thanks, their the one's I'm talking about. On one more note; Boofa Hibbert would have to be one of the most dedicated players with an exceptional character who gave the cub everything he had, he would run until he was exhausted, it was a privilege to coach him, to see his name slurred on social media was an absolute disgrace. Great pick up for the Bloods next year!

From afar it looked like the keys were given to Fev and Triplett and they were able to do whatever they wanted. But that maybe too simplified. If it was and I was a life long south person who volunteered and worked my tail off I would be very disenchanted

I don't mean to slag these blokes off because I know they want what's best for their club and without them nothing gets done. Sometimes best intentions can be misplaced though, and without a wise head running the show, the work that any volunteer does can be just a waste of energy. That goes for any club.

Would be the easy option if they were to leave the BFL. Many other clubs have struggled through tough times over the last 20 odd years (redan didn't win a game for 3 and a bit years, B/marsh hardly won a game for 10 years and Sebas has made the finals once in 20 years), South have made the finals more times than Sebas and Melton over the last ten years and as many times as Bacchus Marsh.

To say its too hard and leave would be a cop out.

Get things right off the field, develop a culture and the on field competitiveness will follow. Happened with the Redan, the Marsh, and starting to happen with the Bloods now.

With any football club the direction or strategy is what drives a club. Marsh and Melton are built through the foundation of their Junior football Club looking at the players that play senior football for them now. Someone at some point must have made that decision at those clubs. Sunbury are now doing that also with Ben Jordan back in charge. Out our way plenty of clubs like Diggers, Rupo, Riddell, Macedon, Romsey back on it now all have had success on the back of their junior programs. Had some tough years but came through. Don't get me wrong, pick through them and they have ALL recruited really well to get their success but still the clubs seem to be ran with all going in one direction and a really good strong footy person driving it. I assume Melton South Panthers need to get that direction, and the right person, (not a coach as they just recruit as much as they can generally) someone who knows football so your not overpaying or recruiting the wrong players, and keeping the coach in check as it sounds like it was just recruit at all costs recently. Whatever the direction and whoever the key person it is stick with it. The recruiting from the outside was not the answer, maybe they felt they had to do that for a reason, only those on the inside know, but now if your on the salary cap player point limit as reported, which would mean your paying an arm and leg to put a team out there each week and still getting beat something is not lining up. Save your money, get a group of players committed to the long haul and get it right. They must know that and if they don't, they need to clear out whoever is running the place or making key decisions. The positive for them is, Fev is now gone, and can only assume that so is triplett who every person outside melton south new about.

It's a good point you make & absolutely 100% correct, however you have the Bloods, South & Centrals & yes a growing population BUT you don't have the industry in the area, sponsors, the same people are sick and tiered having to put their hands in their pockets every year, you can only go to the well so many times. It's becoming very difficult for clubs to survive. I'm hearing Sunbury Kangaroos are looking to shift to the EDFL 3rd Division, Kilmore shifted to the Northern League 3rd division, Lalor, we all remember the years they were a power house playing in the night comp at South, they asked to go down to 3rd division this year & have won two games. Not long before the ground in Sydney crescent has soccer goals at each end & that is very sad for a once great club. These decisions are made to keep a club afloat. a couple of years ago I asked the question, did Diggers celebrate their premiership as much as the Marsh? Bloody Oath they did!!

I agree it is getting harder and harder for clubs to raise the money given the amount of competition from other clubs and other sports/activities. Clubs have to become much smarter in trying to raise funds and try and give them something back rather than just putting your hand out. The Ballarat clubs fight for a lot less resources over a bigger number of clubs when you take into account the CHFL sides. A lot of the gun ballarat players would get double almost triple what they get paid now if they were playing up the highway, but they hang around due to the culture and enjoyment of the club.

Changing competitions won't address the underlying problem of trying to go for a short term fix of big names over building for sustained success with local content and strong culture that people want to be a part of.

Raising the required funds doesn't seem to be the issue at South at the moment, just how they spend it. After watching them this year the level of talent isn't the reason they are losing games, more the lack of fitness and organisation which is down to the coaching regime and culture.

If I read the word CULTURE one more time on this forum "I'm gonna spew up!"

The thing Melton Sth has going for them is there is a lot of businesses around the area and some are big so I’m sure if they have some smart people raising funds is not the issue. Melton Country Club is also next door so I’m sure that’s a benefit also. Also new development going up past the trotting track so plenty of kids popping up.. I’m sure they will be fine..
Lots of history out there..

Sebas are just as vulnerable as South, I'm sure it won't be long before their 'state high' 50-point player cap is reduced inline with all other clubs. With their oldest juniors coming through now being 14 or 15 it's going to be a long time before a steady supply of home grown 1-pointers start flowing through. I'm sure its already been discussed at high levels, but a forced merger with strong junior club Mt Clear must happen eventually. If Mt Clear don't merge with Sebas then surely it's with Buninyong, enabling them to enter the BFL at the expense of Sebas. Our league is obviously not the only league with these issues, look at the Bendigo bigfooty forum and there has been similar discussions, however I feel that the BFL is very vulnerable right now and definitely needs 2 or 3 teams, from developing regions, sitting on the sidelines ready to start playing, or a rapid meltdown of the league could happen within the next 2-years.

Yes you are right about Sebas. As low as they’ve been in the senior ranks, their juniors remained relatively strong for a long time. In recent years though they have fallen to bits, no u18s or 16s & I’m told u14 players & parents are not happy for a variety of reasons & many of them will be at other clubs next year. So as you point out, no 1 pointers on the horizon. Sebas raised the subject of a merge with Mt Clear a few years ago & Mt Clear’s response was to rip Sebas in a vitriolic post on social media. It didn’t go down well. Buninyong prey on Sebas like vultures so it would be interesting to see if players were so keen to move if they were going up a grade rather than down to CHFL, but it seems inevitable that Buninyong would eventually out grow the district comp. No doubt AFL Goldfields will talk about a lot of things but do nothing at all until clubs wither and die or the CHFL comp has 24 teams in it.

That sounds like their move up the ladder may be relatively short lived then. Never got the Mt Clear juniors only thing...

If Sebas were to leave, would a 10 team comp with 5 east and 5 west sides be that bad? Would have an even 18 round draw with no byes.

BFL only had 10 teams in both 2006 and 2007. Still had a final 6 though???
When RDFL clubs came in the league had 12, then East and Point merged and Daylesford left, but north got added in 2008 to make it 11 again.
South seem better positioned long term than Sebas. I doubt the league want to see a 9 team league with perhaps only a final 4. They like their gate money from finals too much to do that.

I thought the AFL Victoria master plan was for all tier 1 leagues - which BFL is - to be 10 team comps. Often here rumblings that some of the Eastern teams want to move and they have openly stated that Sebas are on borrowed time, but they would end up with egg on their face if they dump Sebas and then South opt out to go back to Riddell or Sunbury move to EDFL.

Massive round this week with some finals implications.

Think Darley vs Sunbury should be a cracker, if Sunbury loses they will have to win 2 out of their last three vs B/Marsh, Melton and Lakers at a minimum to make finals. Darley also have a tough run home and if they lose this could drop from 3rd to 6th. Both have some big inclusions with Sunbury getting a couple of VFL guys back and Darley getting Scotland and Billy Myers.

B/Marsh vs Lakers is another big one, the marsh's form of late hasn't been great and they need to start getting some wins and form back if they are going to do anything during the finals. After losing last week the Lakers need to get a scalp or 2 to make finals. After beating the Marsh a few weeks ago can they do it again?

Sebas vs Redan - if Sebas lose this they are just about done. Redan are in pretty good form of late, with all their big names playing well. Their starting midfield would be the best in the comp at the moment so won't be easy for Sebas.

I'd also give South a good chance of an upset against North, have a look at Norths' team this week! They're a long way from full strength, most importantly they have both their leading goalkickers out.

Would have given them a chance if Golby, Ray and Searle were playing

With Golby and Ray out they'll have a bit more room in under their points cap, not that AFL Goldfields take the points system too seriously, no penalty for South and $500 for Buninyong for playing over their caps!

Yeah and Sebas still have a couple of ex Nth Ballarat players on the wrong points wonder if that one will get investigated?

Hausler is the only one not right that I know of, rated 4 and should be 5. Regardless it doesn’t matter as they. Somehow, have 50-points

Considering that he played 7 games for Redan last year that would make him a 6 point player as you get an extra point for changing teams within the same league and the BFL do an audit on players
