Pretty dissapointed we keep coming in second to alot of these deals, Bennell, Treloar Motlop etc.

Hawthorn have been so dominant in the way that players force their way to go the club. We need to appeal to star players to attract the smaller fish to naturally cross over. Yarran is a good player but sees Richmond more as a fresh start than jumping onto a good thing. Look at how Geelong have attracted players like Henderson to continually add to their list.

We're a big club with three consecutive years in finals. If we can't attract anyone from the feeder clubs at this stage it will be hard for us to ever compete with clubs like Hawthorn.

Following discussions last week, Richmond has decided at this point it is not in a position to offer Harley Bennell a playing contract

This is a very strangely worded statement , Why would they not just say Richmond has decided not to offer Harley Bennell a contract
'AT THIS POINT"

So does that mean at a latter point we may ? Perhaps its a ploy to get him on the Cheap Cheap
Good point. Remember with Dusty? Club played him and said he was looking for more opportunities or whatever.

Our defence was good this year, no doubt. But you have to be great to win a flag. Can our defensive unit still improve? Of course it can.
Hawthorn won the flag last year and then snagged James Frawley. Most of their defenders are over 190cm. Do you think Waite would have destroyed Carlisle like he did Batchelor in the elimination final? No way.
Yeah fair point.

I don't really rate Carlisle. Yes he's young and can play to a point but poor attitude (this club is ******), sooked when played as a forward. Plus he'll cost too much in salary and as a trade. Don't think he's worth it.

I don't think we came second here, it is more of a case where we have appeared to just say no to him.
He probably wanted to come here if he spent the majority of the week at the club.

What everyone will assume is what has ruled us out. I will not elaborate and I won't continue posting what I know because as I once said, it's not done until the contract is signed. I'm not interested in putting my head out for attention or hatred. I just wanted to share the excitement. I'm shattered, really wanted Bennell.
So yu are suggesting another gun player is in the works and this is why we have pulled out?

The only thing I can think is Danger to Pies is legit rumor and Treloar is available...but even that is very far fetched.

With that statement, maybe Harley has notified us that he wants to go back to WA. "AT THIS POINT" just sounds like a strange way to end this, as it just looks like if Freo don't do a good deal, we may get involved as a last resort with GC. Just my take on it any way.

Found this out today. We did make an offer
The club has just said that they are not in a position to offer Bennell a playing contract, yet you continue to say we offered him one. No reason for the cluyb to lie about it. Due diligence was done and Bennell didn't make the grade, glad it happened now. Sure like everyone I wanted Bennell at Richmond, but I also want to ensure that the club brings in guys whose priority is playing football first and being successful at that instead of partying like there is no tomorrow.

We've taken a shot at landing a number of big name recruits but haven't got any of them, be it because we wouldn't pay overs contract wise i.e. Treloar, Shiel or their character wasn't a good fit i.e. Bennell or our offer wasn't enough to pry very good players away from their clubs i.e. Fyfe Mundy Hanneberry Hartlett.

In the last 24 hours I've seen a number of people saying we need to be more like Hawthorn, well Hawthorn don't go paying overs to bring players in, nor do they go out and recruit players with big question marks over them. They target players that fit their mantra and land them by being a destination club. The only way we're going to get to that stage is by continuing to be successful both on and off field.

There is every reason for the club to say they didn't make an offer. Would be pretty embarrassing to be knocked back again so better to get in first. I've never seen a club say they won't offer a contract to an opposition player.

Maybe so, but it certainly appears we've been taking an ultra-conservative approach to trading in recent years. Since the early success of bringing in Houli, Grigg, Maric, Chaplin etc. when we were a lower developing club we've stopped being able to guarantee games to new recruits so players need to want to come to the club based on merit. The last three years have really dried up for us trade wise, while all the top four teams have been pretty aggressive in trading out first rounders. If we don't get into the habit of making Richmond an ideal club we put ourselves at risk to become a feeder team like Melbourne or Brisbane who can't retain any of their quality players. It's pretty crucial that we trade hard and develop a culture of bringing in players in this new FA era. We can't get better with just retaining pick 15 every year.
