Winter's back at Box Hill guys...with a vengeance !!

Some very brave supporters today saw BHH snatch a last qtr win over Coburg at Box Hill.

The day started in very ordinary style with the ressies losing their first game in 7 weeks by a measerly 5 points in gale force winds. To say that bad kicking cost us the game would be the understatement of the year...Coburg won 7.5 (47) to 4.18 (42)!!
About the only two highlights I could find were a couple of 'First-gamers' in club stalwart Mark Brebner who has decided to make a comeback after a year off with knee surgery , and young Dylan Dipierdomenico. Both the guys spent some time on the bench but showed that they would contribute more in the weeks to come.Although the wind made things very difficult , coach Ian Wilson made the point after the game (somewhat forcefully) that our guys just sat back all day and waited for someone else to do the hard work whereas Coburg had a red hot go all day. We can only hope that today may serve as a bit of a wake up call to the boys.We could have put a real gap between us and the rest today...as it is we're still 2nd but back in the pack now.

With BOF and KB playing yesterday , Matty Banks and Mark Passador came into the side. The boys started well with a couple of nice goals against the wind but the remainder of the first qtr saw a more determined Coburg make good use of the wind to go to a 2 goal lead at qtr time. From there the game was somewhat of a slog in cold blustery conditions with the boys edging up to the opposition time and time again , only to see the gutsy Coburg hit back and hold on to the lead. A dour 3rd qtr against the wind saw us in a position at 3/4 time to make use of the gale for what could have been a runaway win. Guess what...nobody told Coburg !
Another exciting , tight finish awaited us....hitting the front with only minutes to go then hanging on and on and on for what seemed an eternity for the final siren. Two great final qtr highlights would have to be Johnny Baird's desparate smother to deny Coburg a certain goal and Nat Lonie's long , long , long goal.

Box Hill 13.7. (85)
Coburg 12.11 (83)

Goals : Nicholls 3 , Clarke 2 , Banks , Pugsley , Williams , Ries , Lonie , Obst , Rock , Tuck.

Best : Obst , Baird , Greene , Nicholls , Lonie , Brewer , Mitchell , Williams.

Hawthorn guys :

Billy Nicholls : had a quiet patch in thhe middle but finished up with plenty of footy and 3 nice goals. Did his Chances no harm.

Willo : played mainly off HB again and did some nice things as well as some good defensive stuff. Disposal is just about as good as it gets...even in terrible conditions. The kid is 'scary'.

Changa :Just a game from the boy. Couldn't get into it at all until late in the 3rd qtr when he looked as though it was coming together...what happened ? He got a hammy twinge and came off early in the last qtr.

Nick Ries : did some good in and under work but didn't finish quite as well today.

Timmy Clarke : ran hard but just couldn't get into the game.

Loater : struggled at CHF in conditions that really didn't suit. Was limping noticably after the game and said his knee was pretty sore.

Nat Lonie :ran hard and continually sent the ball into the forwrd line with his long left-footers. Could go back up.

Stevie Greene : started well on a wing and got even better when sent to the BP after half time. Fought hard for the footy and used it super-well under pressure. Top game.

Obba : BOG at CHB. What more can I say. In the words of the great one 'crisis creates opportunity'. Obba cetainly grabbed his today. Hopefully might make a few sit up and take notice. Oh , yeah , kicked a pearler of a goal in the last qtr that just about had JMA go through the roof .....a feat in itself eh Jude !!!

Rocky : terrific in and under game again with the now expected Rocky-yap all day.

Tucky : good game again. Very hard at it in difficult conditions for a guy who likes to take a grab.

Cambo : worked hard on the ball and provided plenty of run without dominating.

Ossie : good in patches..on and off the bench a bit.

Best of the Box Hill guys :

Sammy Mitchell...again showed his absolute class with his footy-smart handball through the midfield.
Matty Brewer.....great captain's game in defence.
Johnny Baird...second only to Obba...miserly in defence and used the footy beautifully.
Matty Smith....good game again from the boy...very tough for such a light guy.
Andy Pugsley...kept us in the game early with some great marks at CHF. Tired a little but was a good contributor.
Mick Georgiadis...did OK with limited ground time.
Matty Banks and Mark Passador..both spent afair bit of time on the bench due to the conditions but were honest contributors when given the chance.

Getting too old for these close ones...but you cant fault the value for money at Box Hill.

Next week......we play Port Melbourne at Box Hill on Sunday.
