Mark Bickley, who led Adelaide to the 1997-98 AFL premierships, will return to football on Saturday in his first competitive match for four months.
It will be Bickley’s first appearance since he broke his left leg playing for Australia against Ireland at Dublin’s Croke Park on October 20 in the second Test of the International Rules series.
And three other Crows – Scott Welsh, James Begley and Trent Hentschel – also will start playing again this weekend, and Daniel Schell is about only a week away from resuming.
Bickley, 33, will play part of a practice match for his old SANFL club, South Adelaide, against Sturt at Noarlunga Oval – and may well find himself opposed to the Blues’ Ben Nelson, an Adelaide teammate.
Bickley has not played for the Panthers since early in the 1991 season, before he went on to play 18 of the Crows’ 22 matches in their first AFL season.
Bickley, who has now played 248 AFL premiership-season matches, has recovered fully from an infection which set in after surgery to repair his broken leg.
He has been on a modified training program throughout Adelaide’s pre-season preparation.
Welsh (groin), Begley (shoulder) and Hentschel (back) also will play in trials for their SANFL clubs this weekend – West Adelaide, Sturt and Woodville-West Torrens respectively.
And, in further good news for the Crows, Daniel Schell has made a quicker-than-expected recovery from a shoulder injury and is expected to be out for only one more week before resuming with his SANFL club, Central District.
Mark Stevens (back) and Nathan Bassett (thigh) will be tested at training this week to determine their availability for Friday night’s Wizard Home Loans Cup second-round clash with West Coast in Darwin.
Stevens is a more likely starter than Bassett.
The Crows’ other injury concerns are: Wayne Carey (hamstring – two weeks), Mark Ricciuto (ankle – three weeks), Ben Marsh (knee – three weeks) and Michael Bratton (shoulder – eight weeks).
This is a very good sign. Hopefully Hentschel gets a crack during Wizard Cup
I thought he had OP not a shoulder injury.
