btw - the investment budget for the MCG listed as $9 million.

Whoopee!!!!

The Melb H-S yesterday ran an article that displayed what the WC bid meant for us.

Geelong $300 mill or so.
and
MCG $9.5 million.

Gawd, why bother putting the $9.5 million in. This is 12 years off. There'll be another $55 mill spent by State Govt and MCC on the GSS in the near future and we're expected to be excited by less than $10 million!!

as it is, the MCG is the only venue that has lighting that matches or surpasses FIFA's minimum requirement.

there is some strong language in the document though -

only 3 rail routes are deemed up to speed (Syd - Newcastle, Melb - Geel, and Bris - GC)
and the avg road travel time b/w host cities is greater than the acceptable 2 hour limit, again, only the above 3 'routes' fit the criteria.

2 hour limits?? How ruddy 'European' is that?? 2 hour limits, for the Olympics b/w venues perhaps!! but across a decent sized nation???

Same goes for the new Perth Stadium.

Cricket use the WACA
Western Force and Perth Glory play at NIB stadium
.. we just happen to have an empty and unused stadium sitting around :)

Why so excited about new/upgraded stadia? The AFL doesn't need them. What they need is better stadium DEALS.
ironically,....only in Melbourne,.... (the place where Govt has spent the least and AFL/private investment has spent the most on venues used for AFL - - go figure!!)

Etihad's contract had a 10 year exclusiveness clause stating no other stadium of similar size could be built. So AAMI was to be built smaller (the original design for AAMI had a capacity of 21k but due to Victory's crowds in seasons 2 and 3 it was expanded to the current 31k) with the capabilities to be expanded to 50k later on. The problem is with the roof - looks fantastic but is a logistical and costly nightmare to remove and then put back. Something of the order of 2 years to expand AAMI to 50k and then another 2 years to shrink it back again. Having the stadium out of action domestically for 4-5 years plus the cost of expansion and reversing it was seen by the FFA as too much to bear.

If that was so both the stadia and clubs/sports listed would go broke in a very short time.

It's more about the design than anything. They knew that it needed to be at least 40k (I think) to host WC games, and they knew that the roof would impede the expansion. So who the hell signed off on it?
It was the FFA that put the kybosh on that, not the government. Yet another cop-out from the soccer freaks
