Exactly, plus Lynn would hardly be asking for a small amount of money.

A big name is useless if they aren’t performing.
Who are the big names? It’s more a competition of no names, I’m not buying into the debate either way but it’s more a comp of journeymen who never made it rather than gun players that you want to go and watch

These days it has become that, Lynn is a big name solely from media overhype. The Big Show is probably the biggest name in the comp.

Gone are the glory days of KP, Gayle, Pollard, Malinga, Warne.

ABDV apparently played but I can’t recall so I’m guessing he was a bust?

Prioritising entertainment over winning is at odds with competitive sport. The French rugby team are entertaining but I doubt they'll ever win a World Cup.

The BBL is solely about entertainment because without any of the top talent it definitely isn’t about the quality of cricket. But the Heat would still think losing every week isn’t very entertaining either.

Agree…so what is it’s relevance? Why play it for two months if it’s a month full of bog average cricket that detracts from the development of real cricketers? I’d prefer to watch Shield or OD State cricket rather than what we currently get

Two things stand out to me;

(1) the over saturation of T20 cricket (this includes international) with arguably the same internationals across the various T20 leagues worldwide

(2) in reference to the Big Bash League, it seems like the same teams get talked up each year and that gets very boring and monotonous. Furthermore, it feels like the same star players stay at the same franchises that become dotted with journeymen who end up with several clubs at the end of their careers.

Forcing changes would be a great start, promoting youth should be a priority not just for BBL cricket but for Australian cricket in general.

Even though there is a year and a half to go and lots can happen, the current French team is the best chance they've ever had on the back of some really solid years culminating in a convincing grand slam this year. They'll also be hosting the World Cup so that will give them another boost.

They really look like they've shed the tag of the flamboyant but flaky French teams of previous decades. If they fall short with this group there is a strong chance it never happens in our lifetimes.

I agree, I think the big bash is a joke and goes way too long.

The best T20 bowler in the world comes and plays for Adelaide every season so he probably should be the biggest name.

I've always found it funny that we need the big names for the BBL to flourish and yet when the big names play in international matches or the IPL there is little interest in this country. The IPL final last year got 33k viewers the same as a Marsh Cup game between Tasmania and Western Australia on the day before. It managed to just out rate a repeat of Love It or List It Australia on the Lifestyle Channel.

Apparently we need to big names playing for our plastic franchises in order to care. The quality matters only if that quality is wearing the right colours.

My thoughts precisely. Don't mind it as a novelty event for 3-4 weeks over the school break for kids, but it goes on forever.

Why would anyone care about a domestic competition on the other side of the world that no one even knows is on?

Of course the Big Bash is going to be more important in Australia than the Indian domestic comp. People do care more about seeing big names play for the teams they can actually go to watch.

A Joe Root or Ben Stokes would be a bigger name than Rashid Khan to most people, as if regular punters are going to see an Afghan cricketer as a big name.

At some point the BBL was big in the UK due to the time it was on in the UK ie. Breakfast in the middle of winter

C'mon is it really surprising its no longer popular?

It was only popular in the first place because it was new and had a initial buzz around it, only T20 tournament I think will be around in 10 years is the IPL and purely because they got the pick of the time slots and get the internationals playing.

T20 cricket is just the same shit in repeat.

Majority of the best T20 cricketers around the world suck in the real formats, format is a jokers comp.

Can only speak from a betting perspective.

But money talks. Like the A-League, the domestic consumer is unlikely to go out of their way to buy tickets but when you have vast amounts of money being bet on the sport/event, it will always be big.

One simply has to look at the amounts bet on the games through betting exchanges to see its no gimmick.

Unfortunately, I cant see the return of the crowds of 20,000+ on a regular basis (outside finals) in the BBL. Changing the rules to attract audiences was also a no no , for me.

Sorry - the fact that people bet on it doesn’t mean it’s quality - far from it - look at some horse races like the ones they been in from Tokyo City Kealba or wherever that is horse form reads 90 starts 1 win, couple of placing but the punters still bet - it ain’t big and like the horse race I just described it’s not good

I am not saying that the BBL product is an attractive product.

I am saying that something along the lines of people these days , just watch the games, with a betting wage on the event. Yep I hate to say it, but an average BBL game rakes in around $85 million AUD from a betting exchange alone.

Locals all know the product and the name is not that good.

Important to remember that a lot of the initial buzz was driven by the fact that the likes of Warne, Hayden and Hussey were involved at the outset. The golden generation’s stamp of approval gave the tournament a legitimacy in the eyes of the public in the early years that wore off pretty quickly.

May as well criticise the Sheffield Shield for not being Test standard, using some of the logic in this thread.

I don't remember that because you just made it up. It grew in popularity when it moved to free-to-air TV, reversing a downward trend.

Warne's contribution was acting like an idiot while mic'd up, and being a cheat to avoid over rate penalties. Nothing legitimate about what he brought to the league.

With the BBL now already clashing with the BPL, and parts of the new Emirates Premier League:

You would think with better money around the world, for even associate country players and Australian players- the quality may be even more diluted than ever before.

That article by Lavalette, mentions things around tax-free money to play in the Emirates, against a tax component playing in Aus. Players in Aus are no longer disappointed in not getting a gig in BBL sides, when they can ply their trade for bigger bucks in other countries.
