I thought the draft was interesting, prob cause it was the first one. The production was somewhat subdued. Lots of shots of franchise reps staring into space. And Howie repeating the name of selected player after the franchise announces its selection.
Wish I had your threshold for interesting. Would make my life a lot more interesting.

I feel incredibly uneasy about Cricket Australia proudly declaring Trent Boult has signed up for the BBL Draft given how much that hurts international cricket. It is not a good thing. They're cheering on their own demise.
Maybe, it’s a worry for sure.
T20 is paying the bills though

So you want the game aimed at kids and families played outside the holidays? It’d kill the competition even faster than it’s currently going down so go for it!!!
Good because this is what killed it to begin with...

Gimmicky rubbish aimed at 8 year olds when it isnt them buying tickets was always going to fail. Stop aiming everything to children ffs - "theyre idiots. Theyd like a bag of gravel if it had a picture of Shrek on it!" Sean Lock

Apart from Australian matches and the geopolitical event that was India v Pakistan, no one is really turning up to watch the best players in the world play at the moment. 8k turning up to watch an England side where every single member of that XI would "bring the crowds back" if they played in the BBL. There would have been genuinely 6 or 7 of the Worlds best 20 T20 players playing in that game and 8k turn up on a Saturday Night.

I maintain that the quality of the players is an overrated factor for BBL crowds simply because very few people in this country follow cricket that doesn't involve Australia.

It’s Perth, they don’t even turn up to Australian test matches.

There were 26,000 to watch that same England team two weeks ago. If I was an England fan, given a choice between seeing my team play Australia or Afghanistan, then I know which I I'd choose.

Throw in the fact that there are five more matches in the next two weeks and frankly, there's only so much cricket that neutrals can attend.

Also, by way of comparison, England vs Afghanistan in the 2015 ODI drew just over 9,000 at the SCG.

I wonder what sort of crowd you were expecting?

That was the crowd I was expecting. It's fine. My point is the quality of the players isn't as big a factor on crowds as is claimed.

I have a feeling that unless we win the world Cup a lot of people might have had their fill of T20 for the summer and we could see more pain in the BBL this year. Wrapping a big pay wall around shorter form international cricket is a disaster too, it's not bringing people to the game and without the FTA tele the interest overall is dipping.

Whilst T20 can be a good tv product, it's not with the BBL, it's too gimmicky.
Watching a bit of the CSA T20 Challenge, it's more straight down to business and focus on the game.
I enjoy the BBL on TV, works well on weeknights when I'm couch sitting. Probably not something I'd go to the ground to watch, but I love it on TV.

I dont really watch other domestic BBL due to the time zones.

Yet it was Gayle v Pietersen which drew 80,000 to the MCG for a big bash game.

You really think the lack of star power in recent years isn’t linked to the free falling crowds?

The World Cup is more affected by plenty of choice and expensive tickets.

I remember that day it was raining on and off most of the day.

We had free tickets but just sat at the Captain Cook hotel all day.

Hoping English got the final insult by getting a washout after being knocked by Bangladesh a few days earlier.

It's only a matter of time before there is a big battle between IPL franchises and countries. CA and the ECB will be able to hold their own in that battle but I don't see how the boards from the poorer nations are going to hold onto their players.

It's pretty clear the IPL wants to move in the direction of a year long series of T20 tournaments moving around the world, almost like a supercharged rugby 7's with the Indian leg at the heart of it.

If it does come to fruition, hopefully it cannibalises itself after a few years.

wow what a downfall! just goes to show more matches doesn't mean more fans.

I don't think the BBL can recover to where it once was unless we get a major restructure.
