Test cricket of any format still shits on BBL.

We have seen in the A-league how the loss of quality has affected interest. Test cricket must remain strong for BBL to prosper otherwise the standard will drop and people will lose interest.

4-5 weeks is the optimum time, as it is now it loses the reason why T20 is fun - it's not as serious, it's about the power game (4s and 6s) and the novelty that it comes around every 9-10 months.

I think they're pretty much different audiences. T20 audiences don't care that much about the quality of cricket, they want the bash and fireworks and that's fine. BBL is there to supply money to support Shield and Tests.

Shield cricket hasn't attracted big audiences since the 1950s and that's fine, that's not its role. As long as it develops good test players, it's doing its job.

And my argument is the last 2 to 3 years of bbl has expanded its programmed impact on shield cricket.

Which could in time impact our test team and the quality of the bbl.

Agree, but my solution would be Shield and Tests until end December, then BBL through January. Allows time for solid foundations to be laid.

I would not have any objections to this. Currently BBL starts in early-mid December and the shield season is just far too short, and doesnt allow for someone to put performances on the board whilst tests are ongoing.
With test series often forecast for February every year (overseas), that leaves potentiially 2 months of no shield cricket leading into a test series where there is no form to pick players from. It's ridiculous.

All fair enough.

A successful test team is very important, and BBL needs a short, fun season.

I don't think we should immediately dismiss how good a successful BBL could be for Australian cricket as well, though.

They're different forrnats and different skills.

You're not a "better" runner, just because you're elite over longer distances.

If the better long form players were better at T20, they'd be getting a game.

Being able to grind out a four hour 50 to save a game is one skill. What Cooper Connolly did is another.

Both are valuable.

I can't speak for other "cricket purists", I can only state my case. I have always acknowledged the market for the T20 game, and its popularity. There is a time and place for T20. I have watched and loved Test cricket and Sheffield Shield cricket since the mid-1960s and had the fundamentals of the game drummed into me as I learned the disciplines of the game.

Personally, I just cannot watch an entire T20 game as it frustrates the hell out of me. People such as myself have to sit around for 2 months while the things I love are just tossed aside and forgotten about. However, I've come to accept that all the things I once loved as a younger man eventually dissipate with time, not only in cricket, but most sports, as well as life.

I guess what concerns me the most is I learned the game watching Tests and Shield. Today's youth are learning the game watching T20. I was watching the end of a game, can't recall the teams because, well, I wasn't that interested. A team was cruising to a win, two batsmen set, and only needing just over a run a ball to win. For memory, they had around 4 wickets in hand.

Rather than just milk the situation and cruise home to a comfortable win, both batsmen decided to cover themselves in glory and got out to ridiculous shots where neither the situation, nor the ball demanded it. The team lost. Now, the part that bothered me most was at no stage did the commentators criticize the batsmen for the way they got out.

I thought they owed it to apprentice viewers to point out where the batsmen went wrong, but no, it was all part of the entertainment. It's just accepted when someone gets out playing a ridiculous shot. I worry what young viewers are actually learning about the game.

Anyway, it doesn't matter. I'm past it, CA couldn't give a crap about what I like. I just have to put up with it. Just wanted to state my case. You call it "elitist", I call it knowing what I want to see in a game of cricket. I'm entitled to my opinion.

It is loses people that want something more than BBL to actually attend live.
I would have gone to two or three internationals a year in the late 80's and 90's and early 2000's but now if I not attend Boxing Day I attend no cricket in person. The international cricket season has been over for weeks. ****, I found myself watching a Boxing fight on the weekend as there no international cricket on here anymore. It a ****ing disaster if you love cricket and now feel like what you want is no longer there so find other things to do.

Yeah, but my point is they have customers like me that actually not attending now.
I cannot attend a Test in India but I will be watching a lot of it on Kayo.
But in person cricket looks like a thing of the past now.
Which probably means over time I lose more and more interest if the cricket board no longer service what I really want to attend in person.

I personally miss the Australia Day one day games.
Even if in the future in the future that day gets moved it's a waste it has gone.

I only know of one person whom I work with that into T20 cricket and I can tell you, he does not love cricket. We have talked about it together often and it clear he not really into cricket as a sport.
I can only speak as a lover of cricket myself that the schedule now is a disaster for me and there been totally void of cricket season for me since the Tests were over.
 
People are free to like and dislike whatever they like - takes all comers etc.

But to suggest that T20 is "unskilled" - particularly where bowling is concerned - just makes you look and sound ignorant IMO. It doesn't detract from Test Cricket in any way to acknowledge what a lot of these guys can do.

It's not about a particular day for me. It more about the summer of international cricket I grew up with and loved is now actually no longer there. I would have loved to have some matches to goto but there nothing on the schedule to attend or even watch on tv around the nation. It just a total ****ing void now for me.

Have you at least tried watching the BBL or T20 Cricket (IPL is high quality) ?

Yes, I have, I just lose interest and turn off. I will tune in for a few minutes if a Chris Lynn etc, on a bashathon but that is about it for me after he out. There no side to barrack for. There no value on wickets etc. There just not much in it for me apart from a few highlights here and there. As actual matches they have no meaning to me at all. I think I may have watched 10 minutes of Lynn and some guy called Short one day. I think I saw some scores there were five players in match that scored 50. I meant to go back and watch the Kayo mini-highlights but forgot about it and that kind of sums up the level of interest I have in it. Not much at all. It just disposable cricket to me.

Fair enough if you have given it a go and can say its not your thing.

I personally have loved all the cricket this summer. Tests offer something unique, but so does the BBL. I just worry that some people (not saying you) won't allow themselves to get into the BBL because of this absurd notion of what it means to be a "proper cricket fan".
