It can be expanded earlier - playing games on weekends. If shields are a problem, they can be played on weekdays.

7 games are played per week - one each night.

Over a weekend, you play 7 games footy style. WIth Perth, perhaps Fri night double headers, Thursday night - games sat and sunday day/night. Is there a reason why games cant be played concurrently like footy?

It will never become irrelevant. Every player in Australia says that Test and First Class cricket is the priority, and as such the 10 match shield season will always happen.

never said it wont and that wasnt the point.

But a league which is clearly exploding cant continually be held back the sport. It just cant. The money to be made will always win out. The difference is just chalk and cheese.

And test match cricket is still the big money winner, and is likely always to be that way in Australia.

14 games a season wouldn't be a stretch prob would have to expand the comp by a week and have more double headers, they clearly work fine ie one game on the east coast starting at 4pm (they do in 95% of the games in perth) and the 2nd game to start at the conclusion of the 1st so around 715pm

the other option is what they did on Saturday night game 1 starts 6pm game 2 starts 615pm perth time

What about NZ's current domestic T20 competition?

The expansion should be in salary cap, turn BBL into a genuine rival for IPL and all the cricket board around the world will start scheduling their players around it.

Talent goes up.

I think it best to work in with the IPL. We dont want a war over players, nor do we want to wear the players out with too much cricket & travel.

I posted here before the big bash started that the ultimate goal should be joining forces with the IPL in a super-rugby type league. Back then most people though this was hit and giggle etc. No forward thinking at all.

The potential revenues are off the charts - already there is a billionaire threatening a break-away cricket league. Cricket is stuck, hampered by itself wanting to please everyone (different forms).

T20 has the potential to open new frontiers - the americas etc, they could target baseball players etc in the next generation.

Timing is hard - but say an Oct-Dec league could work:

ICC stops all other forms of cricket - and T20 domestically isn't played out of this time period either. All players encouraged to play.
IPL and Big Bash/NZ joined - 2 pots of teams - play each other twice in home pot - perhaps once in the other pot alternating.
Teams tour other continent, ie 4-5-6 game road trips like baseball or super rugby does.
Top teams meet in finals etc.

Treat it like baseball, for a few months the sport just blankets the landscape. Nobody is expecting 80K to every game - but the TV revenue would be astronomical.

There's not enough depth in NZ for them to continue to have a meaningful T20 comp.

There will also never be enough money flowing through the game there to make it continually worthwhile for big names to make their way there.

Because a 14 game fixture basically wipes out too much of the shield season.

Only if they persist with playing one game at a time

You could add the 24 extra matches without expanding the length of the season by more than a few days if you always made Perth matches the second match of a double header, played numerous Saturday/Sunday twilight fixtures, and, God forbid, playing 2 games in one slot and showing a game on One

I like the treat it like baseball comment, as I want to see 2-3 game series instead of one-off matches

8 teams would play somewhere between 21-28 matches each...in 40-45 days ;)

From memory in the UK there t20 and county seasons ran together for a period during the season. The t20's would be played fri-sun nights with county games generally mon-thurs. But they don't have franchises and I don't think that'll be possible here with player squads etc... But it's a way to extend the t20 season without it effecting shield cricket.

Is the money more important than tests though. It's up for CA to decide

What's the BBL ratings like (genuine question). You've picked the best session of the best Test this season, so a good comparison would be to the BBL semis or final.

Much less.

And it was only two years ago the the Stars only got 15,000 people to a home semi final despite going through the whole home and away season undefeated

Cricket can be a hard game to measure. It's fair to say that despite peak viewing figures, people tune in and out of a Test match, whereas it's more likely people will watch the whole T20 game. On the other hand, a game every night is more than most would be willing to commit to. Test cricket is still king (particularly the Ashes and India) but BBL is chasing hard. They would be wanting to get to a million regularly in the next season or two.
