Big bodied midfielders are useful because of the push and shove contested nature of the game at the moment at stoppages, reaching up to win possession and more importantly being able to get arms free and dish off. Also good as they clear a path simply by being imposing and big/strong.

They aren't the be all and end all. You still need clever smaller players who have really good agility and evasiveness to take the pressure out of the game, give themselves time and setup play as you see from Sam Mitchell frequently.

All I want is Petrevski-Set on and Powell-Pepper... Don't really mind who else.

Just on this Ainsworth at #1 talk. Has any small forward ever gone first in a draft? Oh and he's injured remember. See him going too 5 but not 1
Is that two blokes or four?

Charlie Curnow could be worth his weight in gold. Has best player in his draft potential.
A player who can play and impact the game as a midfielder and also as genuine forward target, will be an invaluable asset to any team.
Particularly with the way the game is headed.
Charlie and Crippa could be an absolute knightmare for opposition clubs in the future.
Dynamic in the Centre, but how they could tare teams apart when they rest up forward.

You really think Charlie has more potential than Weitering?

Wow! Weitering seems like a sure thing to play over 200 games, Charlie could be the best in the draft, Cuningham is ripping it up, and to top it off we have the son of an absolute Carlton Legend! What a draft!!

$3,373,189.70?

All about that mix, although every mid these days should be able to win their own ball to some extent so that when they need to go they go. On the flip side every mid should be able to link up on the spread to some extent. But players will obviously play to their strengths more often than not, but having that spread across the whole mid group means we could potentially in time rotate as much or little as Bolts sees fit depending on matchups around the ground. Ergo if Murph getting the hard tag flip him onto the wing and switch him with Boek to give Murph more room to break away and such.

Would have been very interesting if Charlie didn't get injured in his draft year. IMO would have gone top 3.
He went down just as he was starting to spend more time playing on the ball.

I'm a big Jacob Weitering fan. That kid is a serious footballing talent.
But if anyone from this years draft pool has the game to surpass him it's IMO Charlie Curnow.
Players that are 192cm+, that can play in the midfield are very rare.

That wasn't my argument though. I asked if any small forward had been picked at #1 in response to posters suggesting Ainsworth might this year.
yeah i know that but i was making the point (i reckon in my opinion only) that a big powerful forward is always better than a good small forward. Ablett senior,Jono Brown, Sticks, Lockett,Tex,Dunstall, Carey. Nothing more inspiring than when those guys grabbed a game in the balance by the scruff of the neck & tore it apart. Team mates walked taller when they turned it on. Just my opinion though.

Just on the Ainsworth sub-topic (which is an interesting debate in itself), if he plays midfield time and shows himself to have the midfield skills required as well as the running capability then he could go number one. But there is no way he will be a top 3 pick if he again plays only as a small forward.

Last year really had only three shorter players in the top 20
That being Parish, Rioli and Gresham with only Gresham at a sub 180 mark of 177cm.

At this stage we have many top 20 players at what may be regarded the shorter heights but watch that change come draft night.

Yep.. Can see Brodie, Berry ,Allison ,Sharenberg and Powell Pepper all going very high in this years draft.
They are all players around the 190cm mark.

Couldn't agree more. A year is a long time when it comes to the development of teenagers.
