Do you believe that Big Brother provided a good window view into Australian society?
This question probably seems pretty weird but I thought that Big Brother was great in the sense that it provided quite an accurate view of Australian society (or should I say Australian society of 18 to 35 year olds).
I felt familiarity with many of the contestants knowing people similar to the people on the show, especially guys like Ben and Blair. It enhanced my preception that Australian people on the whole are quite fun-loving, good natured, happy people, there wasn't too much bitching (except where Anita was concerned
).
It showed that Australian blokes are good natured, like a laugh, and often are all talk. The guys several times talked about their sexual encounters and conquests but only Peter got some action but I guess Ben and Blair did have the greyhound race
The girls on Big Brother were fun, liked a laugh, and were sometimes loud.
European series have, from what I've heard, seemed to be sexfests full of nudity and debaunchery (sounds fun, though) while the Americans seem to antagonise, bitch, and try to knife each other.
If I knew some planning on coming to Australia to visit or a new Australian who was keen to learn more about Australians and Australian culture, I'd recommend they watch a tape of Big Brother to have an insight into the Aussie psyche.
Do you believe any groups were under represented in the household? I think that they could have had more people from ethnic minorities in the group, it was a very white group. Also I believe that there was not as accurate representation of boring, fat and ugly people
Any thoughts?
