Just awaiting Bruce Mcavany to say

"Cox gathers, Cox delievers down Clokes throat"

I would like McAvaney to say that too, if only because big Mason will have 'gathered' the ball and 'delivered' it into the forward line in a senior game. But its a long way off happening, if ever.

On your last sentence, its what makes it even more special.

Hmmm.....international players from NZ. Guys with backgrounds like Pyke. Rugby. Not really an experiment.
How was Garlett an experiment? AFL player with great skills. Attitude/Drug problem. Could have said the same about one Dane Swan at the same age. Recruiting a player with real AFL skills is never a risk. Making him conform to the rules is a challenge though.
Had to google Amos Frank. But falls into the same category as Garlett. Though the challenges would have been more cultural/big city related.
Simply, none of these so called Hawthorn experiments can rate alongside recruiting a guy who had never seen the game and only just picked up a football.
The absolute worst thing about this thread and this discussion?
I still don't know what "brah" is.

If the transition from international rugby player to AFL player is not an experiment, what happened to Hunt and Folou? How would you rate their AFL career's?

caresses it down someones throat is a very strange choice of words. i remember watching it at the time and rewinding it to make sure id heard it right. i am convinced the producers tell him to ham it up though, i don't recall him being like that with other sports he commentates and he gets worse as the years roll on.

definitely a bizarre call. Pyke was an experiment, there was a time BT called him the worst player in the league getting games (or something like that) which was probably justified as he was barely afl standard then, worked out well though.

FWIW, Hawthorn currently have two International Category B rookies on their list and recently upgraded another. In that sense, they're experimenting more than us.

They have Kurt Heatherley and Shem Taputu from NZ, as well as Connor Glass from Ireland. In the context of overall department expenditure, salary cap and list placings, category B rookies are a low risk, high potential candidates. Most of them end up as busts, but it's a great alternative avenue to find new talent outside of the U18 system and state leagues.

I think Cox will make it but I would be surprised if he plays more than 1-2 AFL games in 2016. That would either be really good or really bad news.

No no no, you're totally wrong, recruiting players from New Zealand (where they barely play our sport) isn't an experiment or at least according to black_white.

Bruceisgetting worse with age.
He's a "gusher" by nature. By that I mean he gushes at things, doesn't ever criticise people as such, just gushes by nature.
Oprah Winfrey tends to do that, Molly Meldrum is another.

I had food gushing out of my mouth when I heard him describe Goldsack being like "a dog on heat" in his attack on the man. Seriously, how do I explain that kinda crap to my boy? Lucky he was a lot younger then and didn't ask for me to explain everything to him

Haha!
Another who hasn't examined what Hawthorn are doing compared to us.
They are adding 15-17 year old rugby players who have size and agility. They then expose them to the game over a couple of years before deciding if they are worth a punt.
We have recruited a mid 20's non contact sport basketball player who hasn't even handled an oval ball let alone competed in a contact sport.
But hey, if you think that's a better way of spending our hard earned then fine.
Just don't whinge when we get out coached by a team that is prepared to pay the tax, not throw it away.

+ Wittsy is a rugby convert too.

And Cox doesn't have size and agility?

You've conveniently left that out.

Have you actually watched Maxon Cox play ever?

Something tells me you haven't

Yep, nothing wrong with Cox's agility. His marking and kicking have also come along damn well over just one year.
The biggest question I think is whether he is able to build an AFL-level running and endurance base quick enough to have a shot at playing in the seniors; and then if he does, whether he enjoys playing our game and living in Aus. enough to keep at it past his initial contract.
Only time will tell.

No, I know he has those attributes.
But he has never used those at an elite level contact sport.
I have seen him play, not live though, and note that he does avoid contact, does sometimes look like a rabbit in the headlights and sometimes, well most times, struggles to read the play.
His size of course helps when he is drawn to a contest and the ball comes in high.
Put him up against the best in the AFL and he will be destroyed.
Oh, and I assume you conveniently left out his age when comparing to the Hawthorn NZ players.
