The only thing that is/was bad about Justin Madden was the jumper he wore, the rest is/was very likeable.
Nah
Big dope
Never liked him
Over rated, the aww shucks thing grew old quick

He needs a hairstyle though. At least blow wave it or out some gel through it ffs re.
Vicky Park is the sole ruler on hair styles, her words final.
Till then let the speculation continue

I just really like how quick his footy brain is evolving. Yes he taking strong marks on the lead, but those quick handballs that you have 0.01 seconds to think about doing, are just amazing that someone who is so new to the game can fire them off so quickly.
Youre right, it seems like he already has better footy sense than Grundy

I agree with many others here - its that football IQ/nous/whatever you want to call it that is most impressive.

Skills can be taught, and will continue to be developed, but that IQ stuff is usually something that you either have or you don't. You can improve your decision making and help someone make those conscious decisions, but a lot of the times its about those split-second subconscious things that you do in a high-speed game that make a difference between those who make it in footy and those who don't. (for me, the biggest factor I use when looking at youngsters is just that - how they respond to the pace of AFL, because many guys just look a half-a-step, mentally more than physically, behind the pace).

I wonder how much being a Goalkeeper has to do with that. You might go large chunks of the game you might never touch the ball, but when it comes near you, you have to make the right decision every single time - and so much of that comes to instinct and split second decisions: make the wrong decision, or even hesitate just momentarily, and you often give up a goal - which is a pretty big outcome.

I am quite happy to have egg on my face re: Mason. I never expected him to realistically become AFL standard, and if he did I definitely didnt think it would happen this year. I am so impressed by just the way he has carried himself along this journey.

Yeah, those times he fired out handballs from congestion to release players were the most encouraging part of his game. That sort of awareness is definitely a basketball trait. I suspect that basketball's non-tackling develops peripheral vision and results in players becoming better at assessing options, as they don't learn at an early age to get rid of the footy to avoid being crunched.

I am here now.:)

I have previously described Mason's do as boring. 'Yawn' was the word I applied.

I now unequivocally and gravely withdraw that description, and offer my sincere apology to the big guy.

Mason can shave his hair off, dye it purple, or put it in ringlets for all I care. Just so long as he keeps delivering on the footy field.

Can you imagine what it must be like for our mids now? Knowing they can deliver the ball up forward, where a behemoth awaits. He is causing nightmares for the opposition! That strong mark on the run yesterday was awe-inspiring. Love the big Yank.

It's amazing how many now know how good a big yank is and we've got him.
And if you like his hair or find it acceptable, all is well....

Mason Cox keeping it real. Just saw this tweet on afl.com.au

That awkward moment when you have to go to an Auskick clinic and teach kids how to play footy who have played longer than you. #under40games
A great quote. It must be very weird for him teaching skills to kiddies with only one year of footy experience.

Nickname has to be "yankee doodle dandy"..... What a legend!

He's a southerner, "Yankee" doesn't work ;)

More specifically, he's from ...

Also, IIRC, because he's category B, we can keep him on our rookie list for 3 years and pay him outside of the salary cap?
page 70 of the players CBA agrees with you

Yep, i think that's right too. It's like we got handed a lottery ticket for free, and when we checked it a few weeks while buying a paper start seeing zeros everywhere.
not quite a ticket for free. I expect Cox's salary would still count towards football department soft cap where if we spend too much we pay tax that gets distributed to other clubs.

Possibly and I could be wrong here, but to be outside of the cap we'd need a long term injury to promote him. If he's a nominated rookie to fill the list to 40, like Gault this year then 50% sits outside of the cap.
He was promoted for long term injury this year and would be the same next year.

While we cop long term injuries every year my preference would be to use Cox as a nominated rookie in 2017 rather than relying on one of our other players to be written off with a yet to occur injury.

I'd suggest club would keep their options open until they have to nominate. If season ending injury occurs first than Cox would replace LTI otherwise be nominated rookie as they won't paint themselves into a corner where he can't be played.
