This European comp looks like they pick people off the street, give them a brief tutorial in the rules of cricket, and let them have a go.
I feel so much better about my basic sporting skills when I watch that.

England winning two tests in a row. Throw in West Coast* and the last couple of months can get right in the bin.

* And Freo doing well, Liverpool just missing out on both PL and CL, Penguins getting dumped out of the NHL in semi-dubious circumstances, NSW losing first SOO **

** Can't complain too much - my armchair has given me a great 5 or so years.

****ing ridiculous man of the match honours. It shouldn't just automatically go to the winning side. You give it to the best performing player of the match, particularly in 5 day cricket.

Mitchell 190 in the first innings, 62 not out in the second innings for an average of 252 for the test and runs scored.

But no, it goes to a guy who records 1 very good 136 in the final innings.

I mean Trent Boult batting at 11 had 33 runs and 8 wickets in a New Zealand side that lost a strike bowler to injury during the match. (including both of englands century maker's in the first innings and Root for **** all in the second innings as well. 4 of the top 5 batsmen in the first innings, Root in the second innings and Bairstow the other century maker in the second innings. So removed all 3 of Englands century making batsmen and was far and away the best bowler in the match plus provided critical runs to make it a contest with 66 runs with him at 11 for the 10th wicket of NZ across the two innings.

I know it's all hats off to Mccullum and a great innings by Bairstow but he just didn't deserve the honours.

Some sporting constants remain though:

Yes, I can see how a draft will resolve the issue of the season being too long for internationals to commit to the whole thing. Another masterstroke from CA.
It's not going to be the silver bullet that fixes the BBL but it seems like a good idea. Main thing is CA will give all the first rounders extra money which allows them to pay internationals more without hurting the salary cap and it'll give the BBL some publicity during the off season, both of which are desperately needed.

The thing the BBL needs more than anything else though is the top Australian players playing most of it and they can't do that without a pretty severe rethink in how the international summer's structured

Which is more easily done if the competition went back to its original length or similar. CA (and certain other sporting organisations thinking of adding extra games) need to understand that if you keep watering down the beer to make it go further, people will stop buying it.

You're right, but less games will mean less TV money and that's all they care about. The IPL have just signed a ridiculously large TV deal and all CA and every other countries' boards will be focused on is how can they do the same.

CA: "Why don't you come sign with one of the clubs in The Big Bash League?"

Star International Player: "Hmmm, I don't know - it's a long competition, I'll be away from my family for a long time, January and February are a good time for me to recharge and there's a big test series in March I'd like to be fresh for..."

CA: "OK well, what iiiifff... oooh I know!! What if we added a draft so you don't even get to choose the club you play for?"
