The bottom part 100%. The same applies for any type of aggressive or outside the norm strategy. Going for it on 4th down and 2pt conversions in NFL a very similar concept where if you are passive and lose so be it, be aggressive and lose people lose jobs.

all facets of life. same with a lot of corporations and definitely in government and politics.

Is it just an Australian problem though ?

Looking at the leading opening bat run scorers in the past 5 years

Most strike rates within the 40-50 range

King Rohit in his rightful place. Smashed 'em all, averaging in the 50's by his lonesome.

Shower thought while I'm here.

Gilchrist batted 7 in Tests because any higher up was too tiring after long sessions in the field etc... reasonable logic, but why couldn't he bat higher in the first innings when Australia batted first. Surely that would give him more time to be fresh for the first innings in the field etc...

I can see why they didn't do that.
That would unsettle the 2 opener system, and who we had at the time was a pretty spectacular pair.
We bat first, either Hayden or Langer bat 3 and so on.
And Gilchrist was just so damaging at 6 or 7. A game that was in the balance would be out of reach in a session. Wouldn't want to lose that.

Didn't really see M.Waugh play as I was too young.
Watson's bowling was criminally underrated so he was gets my nod.
Mark Waugh was the most frustrating player of all time.
So much talent.
He was the opposite of Steve. More talent, less application. If we could have got him to apply himself to his game the same way Steve did he would have been an all time great, averaging 60+. Averaging 42 with a high score 153 in tests with his talent is a crime.

He was also the opposite of A Border as a number 4. With AB, if it was 2for5 he'd make a 100, if it was 2for200 he'd be lucky to make double figures. MW was exactly the opposite. Except for his best two innings. In 97-98 against SAf and Allan Donald, he scored 100 is Sydney on a pretty ropey wicket. Even better, in the next test in Adelaide, he came in at 2/17 on day 4 on a breaking up wicket, then batted the entire day 5 to save the test and win the series.

These innings proved that when he applied himself he was a class above everyone, including Steve.
Bangs head against wall... So... Much... Talent.

Ahhh, batting out day 5 to save a test.
I can't even remember what that looks like as an Aussie. Guaranteed if we are 2 down at the start of day 5 on a road we will be out before tea.

Damien Martin was the same. Looked awesome when he made runs. So classy, but would get out at the worse times.

Mark Waugh was also one of the best catchers of all time and was handy with the ball.
Was a fantastic one day player. Would have to be close to best 11

Gilly opening with M Waugh in the late 90s was a revelation.

I think it actually happened a few years ago in the UAE possibly? Paine made 60* off about 200 balls and Khawaja soaked up a shitload of balls too.

the extra 20 runs we left on the table or the 50 extra runs we let Ireland make woulda been nice about now.
