It’s clear to me that the England team are deliberately milking the controversy for all its worth. They want to make sure that the Headingly crowd are revved up to be as hostile as possible towards us. They are talking about how this has galvanised the players to play better and harder. See Root’s comments about Bairstow on CricInfo.
They just can’t deal with losing given all the hype they put out before the series. I find it telling that they have shown they need this kind of motivation to improve their performance. I’m not sure that anger is the best way to play sport.

It doesn't require defending as it was a perfectly legitimate dismissal. What isn't perfectly legitimate is the Pommy whinging about it whilst completely failing to acknowledge that they have performed the exact same act multiple times but pull the "spirit of the game" card when the shoe is on the other foot. Even to the extent of saying that they would revoke an appeal when they have already demonstrated that they haven't and wouldn't.
If the roles were reversed and it was one of our batters getting out like that in a close chase, would you still hold the same position ?

Yes, i'd be really pissed at the batsman for switching off mentally.

You are just making excuse for Bairstow continually here and his brain fart. He should know better since he tries the same thing regularly.

Is this against the spirit of the game? Should Australia have withdrawn the appeal or is this the batsman's fault?

Cool, why stop there for all future Australian opponents

-Australia to apply in writing and give 7 business days notice before submitting an appeal
-Can't get out first ball for opponents
-One hand one bounce when Australia is batting
-Automatic wickies when Australia batting
-6 and out when Australia batting

I'd be farken pssed off with our batsman if he did that. Dumb cricket

I would. Sure, I may be a little annoyed, as per the Starc catch but it is the right decision and clearly in the rules. It is also something attempted in cricket very often but doesn't succeed because the batter stays in their crease or the keeper misses the stumps. If players aren't going to be given out for it, why do keepers keep attempting it - including Bairstow in the same test and numerous times before? According to Head, he tried against him and even said he would take his wicket if he had hit.

There are plenty of ways to get out in cricket that are unfortunate and a bit frustrating when on the receiving end. It doesn't mean you don't accept it and move on, which is the real blight on the so called "spirit of cricket". Surely abiding by the umpires decision is the first and foremost "spirit of cricket" item.

But then, I also have no issue at all with the Mankad and think the warning is ridiculous and I don't believe in walking as a batter (unless you are so sure you are out you just give up - but I don't see it as something you should have to do). I had no issue with Broad standing his ground years ago. That was on the umpires.

It is underage stuff to think you can just wander out of your crease without ensuring the ball is dead, regardless of whether you are trying to get an advantage or not. If the throw had come in from the deep after a wide on which the batter didn't run but wandered out of his crease, would there be any controversy?

Yes.
The blame is entirely on the batsman. Same with mankads. Same if a bowler collected the ball in the follow through and threw down the stumps if the batsman was to dozy to get back.
100% non- issue in my eyes.

We're not like some other club boards - as long as you cum in peas then you're fine.

You're literally letting the batsman off for being dumb *s. I'm sorry but you are one of the most clueless followers of cricket I've ever seen on this forum.

Wrong.

The only way you win cricket these days is by winning the moral battle. Thats why England are 2-0 up in the series (plus bonus points).

As one thats is notra cricket devotee, I am bemused by this spirit fo cricket garbage, these are adults payed millions to win matches. Play to the rules/laws and dont show contempt for the umpires decisions.
I do enjoy the dummy spit though.

Lost in all this is how poorly we handled our second innings against short bowling and England's run chase from 4-50 where our only strategy seemed to be hoping for a Stokes mishit. Australia would want to be right on our game for the next test.

I just hope the next test is nothing but mankad attempts and Bodyline by both teams for 5 days 😍
I'm so excited for whatever Stuart Broad does. He won't be able to help himself.
