Go back 20 years or so ago and it was normal for test players to play in the first 3-4 games of the shield season. Go back a little further and it wasn’t unusual for some test players to play shield games in between tests

So players coming through were playing games with and against test players. The shield competition was taken seriously and the standard was the best domestic competition in the world. It produced the team that dominated world cricket from the early ‘90’s to the mid 2000’s

Have a look at the caliber of player that missed selection through that period and the depth was unbelievable

ACA had already dropped the ball on the shield comp prior to the big bash but once that started it the shield was reduced to an after thought. No surprise the quality has dropped
They still do play 3-4 shield games if not more Keys. They'll play a handful of games prior to the start of the test summer and a couple at the end of the summer. This year they missed out due to the WC.

It has gotten better in recent seasons. The lead in to the 17/18 ashes looked like the good old days for instance.

I'm not sure if this season was squeezed due to covid or the T20 World cup was always planned for November.

There was a period of about ten years prior to that where it felt like we were constantly touring in the lead up to the home summer, and it was often some Mickey mouse ODI series that no one outside of subcontinental bookmakers cared about.

Yep. I'm pretty sure we played five ODI series against India in four years recently.

So Wade played the final with a grade two tear in his side. I don't know if it's a compliment exactly, but you couldn't see the difference in his keeping.

Australian Test cricket captain Tim Paine engulfed in sexting scandal

Australian cricket captain Tim Paine is embroiled in a sexting scandal and will resign.

Test captain Tim Paine has been investigated by Cricket Australia for sending a female co-worker a “dick pic” and string of lewd messages.
It is expected he will announce his resignation from cricket’s top job at 2.30pm.

If he's given the flick, Carey or Inglis?

Unbelievable . Captain of the Australian cricket team. Jesus Christ.

It'll be Carey.

I don't like quicks as captains, though Cummins will be a fine leader. I think the best captain we'd have available would be Travis Head, I rate his tactics and nous, but he's not exactly ingrained in the side yet and won't get the gig.

I meant as keeper.
If it's captain, think they will have to go back to Smith.

The Barmy Army will have some fun with this.

Its official he's stepping down from the Captaincy- just watched the presser.
Exonerated by an investigation 3 years ago but texts about to become public.

Could almost garantee there is a Pommy tabloid out there that has been sitting on this waiting to drop the ****ing hammer just before the Ashes.
Be interesting to see if he takes the field if clear of injury or weather that it for his international career.

He ****ed up but I still like the bloke- he handled it quite well.

You have to wonder why it's coming out now of all times. I'd guess some crappy English tabloid rag caught scent of it after CA tried to keep it discreet so they had to get ahead of it. Would not have been a good look so soon after sandpapergate. Not that it looks good now, mind you.

Cheating on his wife isn't a good look for the captain. But it might be more about limiting the drama around the team. Captains have to do press.
It's not exactly unheard of for cricketers. Nathan Lyon recently is a prime example.
