Just saw the footage and LOLOLOL, so obvious. It's the equivalent of being hemmed into the boundary and handballing to the guy in row 5.

I'm not sure why you need a 5 run penalty though. Just call one short, isn't that enough penalty?

I just read that he was trying to get back on strike. So I can see the justification for the penalty. (i.e. we'll take the single but still have the preferred batsman on strike).

Removing the context of this case where a deliberate attempt was made, I'd overhaul the rule and say that you don't even get one run. If you run a 2 and you didn't ground your bat over the crease as you turned for the second, then no run has been completed. No runs for you!

Removing the context of this case where a deliberate attempt was made, I'd overhaul the rule and say that you don't even get one run. If you run a 2 and you didn't ground your bat over the crease as you turned for the second, then no run has been completed. No runs for you!

I assume so. No point giving them a run and then penalising them 5 ( a net 4 run penalty). Trucko?

In Boland’s defence he’s a much better red ball bowler than white (I think he’s utter trash in limited overs to be honest). A good record at the G also. So there are factors in his favour.

But he’s going on 33 and would be odds on to end up a 1 test player. Just seems weird to me.

Because you have to make an explicit punishment for trying to gain advantage knowingly outside the rules.

Absolutely should be a penalty for deliberate short runs (while maintaining the accidental short run = 1 run plus keep the strike) rule as it presently exists.
