There are definitely a few Aussie fast bowlers of this era (including Abbott) who will end their careers as professionals feeling a bit hard done that they didn’t play more international cricket because there happened to be three excellent quicks ahead of them who were world class, good at all three formats, and unusually durable.

Abbott, Boland, Neser. Before that Bird, Copeland and Sayers. Michael Hogan, who wasn't even close to Australian selection, has taken 674 first-class wickets at less than 25. Steve Magoffin took 580 at 23. Any one of these could have played 50 tests in another era.

Can't think of any era in my lifetime where there hasn't been a decent second and maybe even third string of quicks who would walk into other nations test teams

I rate him as a limited overs bowler, just not so much for Tests.

McGrath, Warne and Lillee the only Aussies to take more Test wickets at a better average.

Anderson and Boult (by 0.13) the only active quicks to better him at both.

He's not a McGrath/Steyn/pick your favourite Windies quick level worldie, but he's a very good test bowler.

Yeah, Australia is so spoiled for choice that Starc ends up being underrated by a lot of people because he leaks runs more quickly than Hazlewood and Cummins.

That being said, his average has not been as good the last two years, and given his age he may think about cutting down to the shorter forms of the game at some point in the next 2-3 years.

Starc also seems to get most of his wickets either in the first couple of overs or knocking over the tail. Which is bloody handy, but maybe that sways people a bit

I said it for ages before the was banned, Smith is and was a bog average captain.

I think Mitch is a lot better cricketer when he doesn't have to think too much about the game.

That would be a pass from me.

There seems to be this weird preference for the limited overs captains to not be an influence on the test side, like CA are giving a good player their dues, whilst also trying to ensure they don't encroach on the golden goose and saves the test captain all that stress. Bison fits that mould the best atm.

Should never have been bowling the last over. If Cummins can't bowl at the death he shouldn't be in the team, and if he can it was appalling captaincy by Finch to have Green bowl it instead.

Ellis should be a lock over Cummins going forward

Do we want him to be bowling and relying on him for runs in all 3 formats?

We finally get a decent all rounder who could be better than Botham/Flintoff/Stokes (looking at Bat 40+ avg, Bowl at 140-145kph and avg <25) and we want to use him to death across every type of cricket there is?

Asking for trouble.
