The problem is for when they decide the supposed A grade opponents only get three tests, two of them are a lock for Melbourne and Sydney.
Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth fight it out and from a logistics point of view, Brisbane makes sense as the third wheel. When it's a four test series, it comes down to them or us.

Adelaide pull good crowds. Even in the cold - they love their day night test. Rightly or wrongly that's our competition.

The problem with Perth competing with Adelaide is that SACA has nearly 30k members paying nearly $400pa for the privilege. That sets a high minimum for Test match attendance.

I think a lot of “move it to waca” folks would want the cricket moved back to optus after sitting through a 40 degree test.

I’ve sat through some stinky hot days at Optus and it’s a bit cooler in the stands than the outside temp. Also the shade available is about a million times better

Granted, the rainfalls below are averages but Sydney experiences three times as many rain days as Adelaide and four times as Perth (not included Brisbane as they won't shift a game there with the Gabba shutting down soon). There's not really any great time to play a test in Sydney but given Brisbane is in the tropics, you'd probably swap Adelaide and Sydney and leave the rest as they are.

That said, we are coming out of a La Nina cycle which means we'll have less rain over the next couple of summers so no washouts and people will forget rain in Sydney is even a thing until it happens again.

Wasn't there a ODI every Australia Day not that long back?

Back when Australia Day was a proper long weekend because the public holiday was the last Monday in January rather than tied to the 26th. Then the tri-series would have 3 games played over Saturday (Aus v team 1), Sunday (team 1 v team 2) and Monday (Aus v team 2)

It was a brilliant weekend of cricket and Adelaide did it justice

Then Howard tied Australia Day to the 26th, Australia’s dominance made the tri series a bit non-competitive such that we brought in an Australian A team and touring schedules became tighter and the whole thing collapsed

I’d fully support a return to the old way not least because it’d take a lot of the heat out of the invasion day protests because Australia Day Is dogmatically stuck on the 26th for no particularly good reason. A proper 3 day weekend could be used to incorporate an acknowledgment of the indigenous people as well as a celebration of achievements since colonisation

But more importantly we could get a proper cricket weekend back

Great memories at both grounds but boy oh boy wowee Optus is miles better. So long as you're not actually running around out there destroying your ankles in the blue and gold that is.

PS: I also miss the old tri-series before it got silly with Australia A.
